Four Americans face prosecution in Turks & Caicos

  • Four American tourists have been arrested in Turks & Caicos in recent weeks on charges that they possessed illegal ammunition. One of the suspects says he mistakenly had two rounds of ammunition for hunting in his bag. The arrests come as the country tries to crack down on gun violence. NBC News' Sam Brock reports.

      I doubt you know anything about these people. Also, 2 rounds of ammunition being prosecuted to this extent is silly. That's easily an amount that can be falsely planted. If I was someone considering visiting these places I would sure change my mind now.

First, that's half of the equation for shooting someone or something; second, they contain gun powder which shouldn't be on airplanes; and third, bullets are just plain illegal in other parts of the world, so it really doesn't matter how much you want to minimize it.

      FORGETTING is one thing, WRe ALL do it!. But he should have cleared up his suitcase after HINTING! And who doesn't clean up a suitcase BEFORE you travel? You take out unneeded weight, dirt, things you put in there previously. Money, personal papers, souvenirs, things that could spill, dust. Stupid things you don't want any security to see.-I-m thinking embarrassing things, certainly *NOT BULLETS!* Just the same I hope T&C let's him go with just the 70 days he's served and forbids him to come back.

      It's not that a punishment is necessarily off limits here...but 12 years? For something that can't possibly harm anyone without the weapon itself? Bullets are small and people aren't perfect--I don't even own a dang gun, but "the punishment should fit the crime" seems appropriate here. Fine him, forbid him from returning, maybe a day in jail. 12 years = all tourists should stay clear of Turks and Caicos. Who knows what other insane law they might have.

    Why is your ammunition even in a travel bag?? It’s supposed to be in a ammo can locked up in your house. Even if you go to the range you should have a designated bag. This story is crazy

Let alone travel to another country with its own laws. Even if you’re a ccw holder you have restrictions for where and when you can carry.

      @Oneproblemme101 There are 0 laws against transporting small amounts of ammunition, with no firearms on your person in any state...as there shouldn't be. People make mistakes. A few rounds of loose ammunition is not a big deal and that should be taken into consideration.

    Who travels internationally without repacking every last thing? There's a travel advisory warning that guns and ammunition are strictly forbidden in Turks and Caicos. Other countries expect visitors to obey their laws just as we expect visitors to the US to obey ours.

I can’t speak for OP but my only criticism of the Russian government was their unfair and inconsistent application of their laws. If Turks & Caicos decides to give one man 12 years in prison but the rest receive significantly more or fewer year’s sentences, then I will have the same criticism of this government. But I have No criticism in them sticking to their own laws over ammunition.

      It's not in their "travel luggage'; it is in their bag they use every day. Most guys that carry keep the gun and the extra mags in their backpack or shoulder bag. I always stored my extra mags inverted to keep dust and dirt out of them. It is easy for a stray round to fall out and become lost in the bottom of the bag. They probably took some work stuff with them in those bags, so they didn't empty them 100% before travel. They probably don't have the luxury of extra bags just for traveling. So, no, not a single one of these guys took their "travel" backpack, threw some rounds in there and had a laugh about it.

Probably keeps his extra magazines for the gun in this bag. A good way to keep them free of dirt and dust is to invert them. This can lead to some falling out of the mag and going to the bottom of the bag. No, he did not throw ammo into his bag before vacation. This exact thing happened to me about 13 years ago- stray round fell out of the mag in my briefcase and was found at the airport. It was no big deal as it is useless without the actual gun.

      they're also an island with far less people. you can't regulate a country that has a border with Mexico, over 350 million citizens, and more guns in private ownership than there are people. even with stricter gun laws you can't keep track of all the guns in private possession because most are not registered. gun owners like me lie about how many we actually own and keep them hidden

      You, as with many others, lack imagination and critical thinking skills. If you had ever carried a weapon on a daily basis then you could clearly see how such a thing happens. No, he did not "put ammunition in his luggage". It was in his carryon, probably the bag he takes to work every day. He works in a dangerous job and probably keeps extra mags in the bag. It is very easy for rounds to come out of those mags and easy to not notice this has happened. A stray round poses no danger without a means to fire it. The guy took his work bag with him, probably having to get some items completed while away. It is a simple mistake that anybody could have happen to them. No different than if you had a metal nail file in your purse and forgot it was in there. That file is far more usable as a weapon; do you think you should get 12 years in a foreign jail for forgetting that?

The problem rests with the adults that were living in an alternate reality and failed to look inside bags that they knowingly transported ammunition in at a former time in order to make sure it doesn't find them in a problem during their cross border travels. They've earned their trouble.

    T and C tried just fining people, and giving them light jail sentences, but that wasn't stopping irresponsible gun owners, so they had to do something extreme. Now people are crying because they don't think it's fair. I'm all for people legally owning guns in the US, but prove you can be responsible.

    I use bags to carry tools you can't take on a plane. Every time I fly I make sure those tools aren't in those bags. I'm shocked other people don't do that, especially after 9/11. It's just common sense.

    "It was an accident". They just happened to put their ammunition in their luggage before going on a trip, because apparently they carry guns and ammo everywhere they go, even out of their country. I can hear them shout "I am American. I need my to call my lawyer." from afar.

      No guns. Just a few rounds of ammo. Two, in this case. No, they did not place ammo into their luggage before traveling. Not everybody is rich and has dedicated bags just for traveling. This was the carryon bag and likely the bag he uses every day for work. Some rounds got loose from the extra mags he probably keeps in there but removed prior to travel. Dense, small rounds will go to the bottom of the bag and be difficult to see. You have to know you are wrong when you speak about two rounds of ammo and call it "guns and ammo". Those two rounds hold no danger for anyone without the actual gun required to make them lethal.

    first do normal people travel with amunition? And how does ammo randomly appear in a travel luggage? Be responsible, use your range bag and have a bit more responsibility storing and locking your weapons and ammo. if true, TSA missing ammo in the security check is also concerning. Cruise ship I can kinda understand but goes back to more responsible gun ownership. If this is all false, then ammo somehow slipped into their bags at Turks & Caicos?

      Maybe this is the bag he uses every day for work and the rounds fell out of the extra mags he carries. Being dense they would drop to the very bottom of the bag and be difficult to see. They are not alleging that someone slipped the two rounds into the bag and they do have a point that both TSA and cruise security did not find the rounds, where it would have been a simple matter of confiscation and an apology. This guy did not know they were in the bag and did not, in his time on the island, hurt anyone or cause any property losses. Do you, in the real world, believe that 12 years in jail is appropriate for this? He was leaving, not trying to bring them in.

    You are asked to double check your OWN luggage. You even acknowledge that you packed your own luggage. I never use my suitcases for anything that isn’t air travel safe, but it baffles me that these so-called “responsible gun owners” know they handle weapons/ammunition, know they’ve been in those same bags and don’t quadruple check to ensure they aren’t still there.

    When I travelled to the US and was a daily hash smoker decades ago I was very diligent in washing my jean jacket,checking every inch of my luggage and carry on bag knowing the laws.
    My opinion of the crazy US drug laws was not up for debate…don’t be a fool and no issues!

    2 rounds and no gun? A New England Patriots player recently tried to go through the airport with a loaded gun that had modified with an illegal switch. Massachusetts has very strict gun laws against these things but surprise surprise the DA dropped the case for no reason. Well the reason is Kraft is well connected.

      It was two rounds. They probably fell out of extra mags that he carries for protection. Very easy to remove the mags and not be able to tell that they are lighter by ONE round. Further they are quite dense and will fall to the very bottom of the bag. This is not a box of ammo nor was there a gun.

    I’m sorry for the children but not sorry for the parents. Even in the US we have very varying state laws over guns and ammunition. So why would it be any different in another country? How is anyone so accustomed to carrying ammunition that they don’t realize it’s in their suitcase? Take responsibility for your own negligence and oversight. He has a dangerous job that takes him into bad areas, often immediately after violent crimes have been committed. Standard self-defense load out is the weapon with two extra mags. I always store mine upside-down in my bag to keep dust and dirt out of them. This can lead to one or two falling out of the mags. This guy did not bring ammo on his vacation. It was buried in the bottom of his bag and he didn't know it was there. It is astounding the level of expertise the antigun nuts believe that they possess. No intent. No stunts. You are blinded by your hatred and political ideology. That is the most generous assumption, anyway.

      It is forbidden to have stray rounds in your carryon in the US as well. Unlike T and C, security brings it to your attention and confiscates. Not the same as bringing a gun. A stray round or two poses zero danger to anyone.

    If you own a firearm, you should be keeping track of each bullet you have. In one country I know, as a civilian, you are allowed 50 rounds per year and have to account for everyone.
    The govt in these smaller countries don't know if you came selling bullets and some fell out, bullets can fetch a good price.

    I think this is a set up... Here in the Philippines we also have similar cases relating to Schemes like that. WE call it "LAGLAG BALA" Scheme translated to "falling bullet" where in Airport employees sort to these scheme to earn money or extorts money from the tourist or local travelers the moment you put your baggage and hand carries in the conveyor belts for x-ray the officer or airport employee will slip sneakily an ammunition into your baggage and as we all know its illegal to carry one. funny thing is that why do you have a 1 or 2 ammunitions with out the gun? when you get caught its either you resolve it right there and then give money to the airport officials so they can let go of you or you will not be able to fly and you'll got a ban from fly. It was discovered that its a big syndicate running theses scheme.
