FYI, the reason your height map ended up so "horrible" was because you made the terrain extremely small scale to what it would actually have been based on the size of the heightmap. The website you showed doesnt give you the actual area of the map, it just gives you the cross section size, so in reality you should've sized your terrain to 17km*17km which is 289sqr km, but instead you made it only 17 square km. This is what made the heightmap look so "extreme"
Great catch. I was wondering why my buildings were not lining up with the image overlay and seemed gigantic. But wow... the map is soooooo huge now.
@@GeoTactics yeah, happened to me as well and took a while to figure it out lol, and yes the map becomes so much bigger when you get the correct scale. It's kinda hard to get a good size map that isnt too big lol
@@FusionTrain My system cannot handle a large 17kmx17km map (289skm) and hangs or crashes. Might have to go back do smaller maps. Bummer.
Hello , could you please help , i want to prepeare some terrain for a4 , the question is would terrain created in reforger world editor funcional in A4 ?
@@Bageuette4204 A4 is not out yet. Reforger is NOT A4.
This is some good stuff to get people started. Explains things well enough for anyone to be able to get into this if they want to. Definitely helps me out as you've done more faffing about than I have with the tools. Looking forward to more.

If all these steps are required for the start of the default terrain editing, why there is no terrain template or something?

Long time since i've seen this video :) This was one of the vids that helped me get started with terrain editing for Reforger.
fantastic tutorial!
One tip I found with the road tool, if you select either of the boxes that come off of that blue line, you can move them towards the original road point, and it will remove that curve. Don't keep messing with them trying to get straight lines, just bring those blue boxes in
The buildings can flatten the terrain underneath them if you check the adjust height map in the entities options.

Can you make a tutorial about how to add weapons, gear ,vechiel in to in-game spawn?, Heavy Depo & arsenal equipment etc.
This is great stuff, now i can make 3D map modles for work and for hobby lol. ive always wanted to get into arma map making as a hobby. Also if any communities looking for people to teach lmk. I did get hung up with the satellite png. that wouldn't load for me but besides that everything else was pretty solid.
Great tutorial! A problem I ran into was the importing of the height map, specifically it was being imported into the positive x and z cords while the terrain size I was giving was centered around the origin (aka only a quarter of the imported height map was in bounds) I fixed this by adjusting the Terrain entity cords by half the terrain size in the negative direction (for this example, the area is 18.9 km^2 = 4352 m x 4.352m, so adjust the terrain cords to x=-2266 , y=0, z=-2266) This should center the imported height map on the terrain.
Also, as someone has already commented, the area from the height map you used is not 17 km^2, it has lengths and widths of 17km so the actual area would be 289km^2 :)

I'm trying to recreate the village where I'm from, however I'm having a hard time getting the scale right.
After importing the heightmap and satelite-image into the world, I tried placing a car down and it is way too big compared to what it should be. Is there any way to get a scale that is more true to real life, or do I have to manually sculpt everything?

Great tutorial! One question: how come that with the data from the terrain map exactly as specified it becomes so much higher/steeper than it looks to be in " real-life" (eg Google Maps 3d)
Either it's perspective, or for the heightmap the heighest point (biggest value) isn't the same as the geographical highest point.
If anyone has lots of crashes like I did when I first started using the tools is to create a folder called World's and save your project inside that folder. all my crashes stopped after that.
Why does the satalite png crashes when applied even when it's png i tried multi times and still crashes
Do you have to use a height map or could you use the terrain tool to just make your own map ?
Hey great video! Just a quick question, do you know how to stop the terrain grass from overlapping with the road? Thanks!
Easiest way I found is to paint over it with the default, this will replace it with the sat map you import under the road.
After you create/update roads, (re)import a satellite map - make sure you have "render roads" checked. It will prevent the grass to grow under the roads.

I made my island without a satellite map because it's quite small. Is there an easy way to generate a satellite map from the map's applied textures? Because at the moment when you zoom out everything goes grey as the image I imported for the satellite map is greyscale. Btw, a lot of the lighting/post processing entities can be set up using prefabs in the resource browser without having to enter everything yourself (search 'lighting' for example). I made a guide on Steam but a lot of it needs updating as I didn't know you're supposed to use the satellite map like this.
If you painted the surfaces, you can export their masks. You can use this as an alpha mask in you favorite raster editor like Photoshop. This advice is certainly not a complete tutorial but maybe it can help you get started :-)
Have you progressed this further I've come to a brick wall getting errors now....I'm sure there's a better way. Also I'm wondering if there a way one could use the already built in terrain and just edit the buildings and add remove rocks etc... what's your thoughts?

Hi, a great tutorial, but i have a problem. When i put the atmosphere all the terrain become withe, and i can't see nothing. How can i fix it?
SatMap imported hundreds of meters above heightmap. How do I lower it down to heightmap level?

One thing I've noticed was that at 00:17:15 a new entity appears in your hierachy, that isn't mentioned in the video. is this important, or just an oversight?
I also ran into a visual issue where, when I click on the terrain tool button up the top of the screen, my window would re-size itself, hiding the bottom of the window, (where you say to click the terrain tool at the bottom right) (00:17:32). I fixed it by toggling fullscreen (F 11) on and off again.

Following up on the terrain tool button, if you go to "windows" tab up the top and select "current tool" to display it will also come up.@@grimstar232

aWESOME tutorial. thanks. within minutes I got a crappy lil map of estonia put together. look out for my new map called ESTONIA. I'm going to try to make some of the key terrain features and stuff there, and include the roads so people can simulate a russian invasion / nato war :D

I tried everything but i have a problem.
Made a terrain with 2048x2048 size. In world editor i cant reach the end of the terrain. Camera stops at 3000 x or 3000 z . In gamemode i can walk over that ,border, . How can i fix this ?

hi! short question when i start the world editor i have no lines!..i mean the black ones!..and i when i click create new terrain after i save it and do everything right..nothing appears..i cant see it
Unfortunately it could be lots of things. It might be that you just cant see it due to a perspective issue. Under the top tool bar try clicking perspective and changing that would be my first try.

This was from someone else - I cannot take credit.
Start with a blank world, create new terrain entity, do the "create new terrain" thing (terrain is invisible), then delete terrain entity and immediately revert this step. Terrain should appear and you'll be able to save the world.
Not a bad effort at all, enough info to get people off the ground (pardon the pun) with terrain editing
When adding the PP affects, there is a simpler way than adding them separately and naming them.

Also I don't know if you will even bother responding but im having an issue where none of the object such as houses that i put into the world, have any collisions with the player what so ever. The player just clips straight through them like they dont exist

Just close Reforger tools and reopen, that will sort the issue put.
Can this new tool be used to make Arma 3 maps? I have been looking for an editor for Arma 3 as I hear Arma Reforger is very arcade like, not as much a sim. If not does anyone know if the best/newest map maker for Arma 3?
