SPACEBALLS Movie Description:
In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called "Perri-Air." In desperation, Spaceball's leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf (John Candy).
Spaceballs is a 1987 American science fiction comedy film co-written, produced and directed by Mel Brooks. Starring Brooks, Bill Pullman, John Candy and Rick Moranis, the film also features Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner and the voice of Joan Rivers. In addition to Brooks in a supporting role, the film also features Brooks regulars Dom DeLuise and Rudy De Luca in cameo appearances.
The film's setting and characters parody the original Star Wars trilogy, as well as other sci-fi franchises and popular films including Star Trek, Alien, The Wizard of Oz, 2001, and the Planet of the Apes. It was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on June 24, 1987, and was met with a mixed reception. It has since become a cult classic and one of Brooks's most popular films.

Looking forward to Men in Tights!
Perhaps consider watching History of the World Part 1 before Robin Hood: Men in Tights,
both are worth the watch but HotW will be a bit anticlimactic after RHMiT
wise choice giving Prince of Thieves a look before Men in Tights, the latter is very much a response to the former
Any thoughts on watching the original Producers? (I personally prefer the newer version, Nathan Lane knocks it out of the park, but if you vibe off the Wilder / Brooks collab energy the original will scratch that itch well)

If you're enjoying Mel Brooks movies check out History of The World, Part I. A few other suggestions, in no particular order: Meaning of Life, Animal House, The Jerk, Coming to America, Strange Brew, Spies Like Us, & This is Spinal Tap.
Fun fact: the merchandising and action figures scenes were a dig at Lucas, who told Mel Brooks that he gave full permission to make Spaceballs as long as they never made any toys or merch
Spaceballs: The CZcams comment
I think it may have been praise for Lucas, rather than a dig. Lucas gave 20th Century Fox the lion's share of income from the Star Wars films, in trade for all rights to movie merchandising. Up to that point, no movie merchandising had been done in films, so the studio thought Lucas was an idiot and said, "sure, take all the merchandising rights, we'll take the cash." Lucas then went on to make more money in merchandising than the studio made showing the movies. Studios don't offer that deal anymore.
A bit more than that, actually. In return for not having any merchandise, they got to use the same special effects as the star wars movies did!
How is that fun, i want Space Ball dolls 😫
@@ClayLoomis1958 no, it's a dig. 😜
Fun Fact: George Lucas said Mel Brooks could make as many Star Wars knockoffs as he wanted but he couldn’t make any merchandise and sell it. So that’s why Yogurt was merchandising, as a gag to George Lucas
I would have been happy to buy some of that merchandise
I'd buy the flamethrower and burn down some Star Wars past 2012.... figuratively speaking.
@@magic8340 nah man, Disney managed to set fire to that quite well, all on their own, no help needed!
@@chriswihuluthat's when I come in with a n.u.k.e
Fun fact, that headphone gag was literally the first joke written and inspired the entire movie
Really? 😂
I'm thinking Star Wars probably had _something_ to do with the inspiration.
@@ClayLoomis1958 , what do you think inspired the headphone gag?
@@ahwhite1398 Leia Organa?
@@ClayLoomis1958 I can't remember where I saw the interview, but basically that was the first joke written and made Mel Brooks want to do a Star Wars parody
19:00 Fun fact: Rick Moranis improvised that entire scene with the dolls. He was just handed the dolls and told to do something funny, and the cameras started rolling moments after. The man is a comedic genius.
I bet Mel Brooks was rolling on the floor when Rick said that "Druish Princesses are often attracted to money and power"
He also kept wanting to do every scene over and over, because he was assured he could do it better and funnier, and had ideas to run by Mel for how to improve the scene. A master of his craft.
Dang I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing.
Hell yes
According to Bill Pullman {Lonestar}, John Candy's "That's going to leave a mark" quote was ad-libbed as well.
that black dude with the afro pick that says "we aint found shit" in the desert scene is Actor Tim Russ, More well known for his work on Star Trek Voyager as Tuvok, the Vulcan.
It's really him. That was surprising, so unlike Tuvok.
Did not know that. Wow
Why he is the best. We used that quote in my house growing up. None of my friends even knew this movie existed.
OH! 😄
@@OblivionGate Tim Russ wasn't in Up In Smoke. Michael Winslow was in Cheech and Chong's Next Movie. Maybe that is what you were thinking about.
I love the fact that they got John Hurt to reprise his role from Alien for the restaurant scene. "Oh no, not again!"
The effects were done by ILM, the same crew that did the Star Wars effects.
Which is why they made the joke about SpaceBalls merchandising. Lucas asked them to not make any if they were to work on it. ILM even used a scene that was made for Star Wars in this movie. It was where they were evacuating MegaMaid. The escape pod launch was made for Star Wars but wasn't used.
And ILM was created almost specifically for Star Wars, then for others to hire...and started PIXAR as their original CGI group.
@@Ez_Brzy HA! The scene with the escape pods made for star wars I did not know. Very cool use of unused scene.
The same company who would later bring us the effects for films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Death Becomes Her, Jurassic Park/World franchise, The Mask (and its unfortunate sequel), The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Hobbit Trilogy, Transformers franchise and most recently they did the visual effects for Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The reason the effects look so good was because Mel Brooks wanted George Lucas' blessing. George Lucas loved the idea so much he not only gave his blessing but gave him access to his effects studio which was used in the actual Star Wars films. He did speculate however no merchandise in case people mistook Space Balls merch for Star Wars. That's why there is all the merchandising jokes.

Funny you say that. Mel Brooks went to George Lucas for permission to make Spaceballs, a parody of Star Wars and Lucas loved the idea, as long as they didn't sell any merch from the film, so he gave them the full resources of Skywalker Ranch including Industrial Light and Magic, Skywalker Sound and the full library of sound effects and assets. The Millennium Falcon even makes an appearance at the end of the film, parked at the diner.
The music in the desert scene is originally from “Lawrence of Arabia.”

This was (and still is) one of the best spoof movies ever made. I HIGHLY recommend taking a look at GALAXY QUEST. That did for Star Trek what Spaceballs did for Star Wars. A lot of people feel that Galaxy Quest is a better Star Trek than most of the newer actual Star Trek stuff.
How can you not think that when you’ve got Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shalhoub. I’ll take Galaxy Quest over Star Trek every time.

Don't forget Tim Russ also appeared in Star Trek TNG, Star Trek Generations if I'm not mistaken and Star Trek Deep Space Nine as a Klingon Merc and a mirror version of Tuvok. This movie was my introduction to Mel Brooks growing up in the 80s
I know this is three years old but you putting in Halcyon and On and On in the video at 8:56 made me entire day. That song is one of my favorites of all time, I was lucky enough to see Orbital live a couple years ago…it was magical
Funny thing in that "I am your father's..." scene: If you break it down, it really just comes out to: "I am your cousin's former roommate." Father's brother is your uncle. Your uncle's nephew is you or your sibling, but either way, the next one is just your cousin! Well, villains do tend to be excessively talky, I guess.
Unless the uncle had two or more siblings, then his nephew could be your cousin. That would make it your cousin's cousin.
But he was a former roommate. Don't forget.
When you make the "ass-itch" joke, I can hear Orbital's "Halcyon and On and On" playing in the background. Amazing song choice!!
