That description of the difference between Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon is the most spot on thing I've heard in a good while.
Ikr
Looking at modern spongebob yeah nick cartoons are gross
Agreed. That was a great way to distinguish the two networks
Well now Cartoon Network is just reruns of the same show
the thing is i remember watching it on nickatnite

That episode gived me nightmares for days.
That episode was fucking terrifying.
@@Dumb_Lance it sure was
My fav episode of all time
I’m well into my 30s and I refuse to watch that episode. It’s so creepy!
Hey, Mat and Game Theory friends. A sad fact is that fairly recently, Muriel's voice actress passed away, which I believe explains the memorial in this "game". She will be missed.... RIP.
Well that lady in the picture wasn’t actually the voice actor and she would have died after this game was being developed, unless this whole section was added after her passing away
@@thefnafdetective lol do people actually think this was a real PS1 game? Or at the VERY least, not a heavily heavily modified version of it? It has a mechanic which requires your PC to crash the game and rebooting before continuing lol. It was released a few months after she passed with 0 official information.
@@lannyfce4786 you know he could be referring to the actual development and release date of the game as it exists, right?
Aww what?!...
I'm gonna miss her :(
@@dragonheart1236 it took me 4 seconds to google this and see that he’s wrong lol the game came out a few months after she died
We rarely get to see or hear them as of late, so I appreciate the random bits of banter that mention Amy and Jason and that they *do*, in fact, still work for the theorist team~
My good sir/ma’am why is your name isis rose?
@@nathana9649 Why not?
@@nathana9649 you do realize Isis is an actual name right? It's of Egyptian origin and means throne and was also the name of an Egyptian Goddess. Rose is probably their middle name or maybe an uncommon last name.
@@alesbianhotmess it’s Ross not rose
Right? I miss having them actually pop up on this channel for fun...
Wouldn't that be "To Krill a Mockingbird?"

That's awesome
I imagined this as that one meme of Skipper from Penguins of Madagascar
I respect you
hhhuh?
Courage: Muriel I’ll save you.
Me: Not this time buddy. Not this time.
😭
Courage: I've got a bad feeling about this.
Doesn't help the fact that her voice actress died no to long ago this year... broke my heart
@@blackmailz oh,what?
Why....ouo
Codename: Kids Next Door was my absolute favorite
And by now we're all adults or teenagers, the very things they were fighting against.....😨😵
I was, and still am like Numbah 3 a bit, I loved, and still love stuffed animals!
Rainbow Monkies for her, Pokémon/Beanie Babies/Webkinz for me!
And how her Dad never let her touch the thermostat, no wonder she always wore long sleeves that go over her hands!....
I mean, I can touch it now that I'm an adult, but as with any kid, touch the thermostat, get yelled at, though it looked a bit more developed with her Dad.
Yeah everyone forgot about that show,it's good
The thing about Courage that was always fascinating was the use of meshing animation styles. Not even meshing art styles which they also did, but the actual way things were animated in different ways to make them that much more surreal and out of place and unsettling. It was such a good show but hoo boy was it terrifying
Awww. The memorial for the voice of Muriel is sweet😭
I was just going to say that because of the pic was of her i believe
I didn't like that he was laughing about it :( I'm sure he just didn't know and was in spooky game mode, but it still hurt 😞
@@magicdawn1973 no he definitely didn't know it was an actual memorial, seeing as how he didn't actually watch the full series. Probably thought it was just a real photo taken from the internet to Use as the character's 'face'
I don’t think that’s a memorial for the voice actress, for one thing the photo isn’t a photo of her, Muriel’s voice actress had short strait hair and she didn’t wear glasses, also I’m pretty sure the creators of this game worked on it before Muriel’s voice actress died
@@MINRoadkill Yeah they made this game before she died so its purely coincidental which just makes it more unsettling imo XD
Fairly Odd-Parents Breakin’ Da Rulez is actually one of the best games I’ve ever played for PS2. Matt is not lying at all. That game is so good, it has a hub area that is Timmy’s house and the level selection were items in the game. You could go into the pipes of the toilet or the comic book world inside the stack of comics. It was truly a great game.
I used to love that game as a kid. I think that the videogame and the alien levels were my favorite.
That reminds me of an older PS1 game Rugrats:Search for Reptar with the Pickles' house as the hub world and items as individual levels
Yes, the era of 'great games make money' rather than 'think about how to make money and create a game around it'
God I love FOP:BDR. I hated the level where you're running through the hallways and Crocker would pop out of random lockers, and if he saw you, you "died" and had to go back to the "checkpoint." I often randomly remember one of the lines of banter between Cosmo and Wanda that goes like this,
Wanda: Hey, look! A Greek urn!
Cosmo: What's a Greek urn?
Wanda: More than we do! *Cackles with laughter*
@@dumbandconfused the level that got me the hardest was the tight rope balancing mechanic in the Toilet sewer level, with the Q-tip. I hated the balancing but when I replayed recently it was nowhere near as hard as I remember it being.
There's a shader that fans made for the game. If you install it, it highlights the secret path in purple for you right in-game so you can just walk on it without having to consult the spectrograph map. That should remove a bit of the headache for you.
Muriel passing was kinda upsetting. Think of how upset Eustace must be.
"Stupid dog!" *grabs mask* "OOGA BOOGA BOOGA!"
*Courage screams*
"AHAHAHAHA!..."
Then he looks to the rocking chair and realizes Muriel is no longer there to hit him with rolling pin, so he begins to cry like when he was a boy with no hat. Courage sympathizes with him, walks up, lays down at his feet and whimpers. Eustace smiles and pats his head.
"Good dog, Courage. Good dog."
Bro Tf is this
@@Jsjsao the mind of someone who knows how to hit someone in the feels
Then as he said "good dog" the second time, it cuts to Muriel's grave behind the house, and it reads "RIP Muriel Bagge. Loving Wife and Pet Owner"
Aww
Courage was borderline Lovecraftian horror in a lot of ways. Really interesting and fun show all around
Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy was the show that fueled me for years
I thought it was called yhe adventures of billy and grim.
This could be another 3 channel colab, Game theory can cover this game, film can do one on the show, and food theory can test if Muriel's secret vinegar recipes would actually work.
Yessss!
I hope he continued playing this game since from I see he just scratched the surface.
I can't help wondering if the "In Memoriam" was just a creative choice for the "plot" of the game, or an actual tribute to Muriel's va.
I'd like to think it's the latter.
Could be both.
"So what's your favorite cartoon network show?"
Me, who never had cable growing up and only had vhs and dvd:

I went to my grand parents to watch these shows mostly Pokémon and dragon ball z but I also watched a show called radioactive it was about a group of high school students running a radio station

I loved courage growing up. I would love to see a theory on the show if you can't do one for this game.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
The definition of induced insanity is doing almost exactly the same thing over and over again trying to find the one tiny thing that changed each time.
What about doing the same thing over and over, but being inconsistant about it so you aren't sure if nothing's changed or if you just missed something - like randomly jumping, skipping corners, running away from walls instead of continuing down, or just up and dropping what I'm doing to go somewhere else before kinda sorta coming back?
@@TheAtemAndrew That's what we in the scientific world like to call "the process of going insane"
Have I ever told you the definition of insanity?
This series seems like it should have shown up more sooner on Matpat’s channels
@@oliviawilde5646 wtf
That memorial was for the voice actress of Muriel because she recently passed away irl.
The blacked out words are 'Old Wind'. I think it is this because if you refer to the website where you download the game from, looking at the game description, two words are incorrectly capitalised in their regular sentences, those being 'Old' and 'Wind'!
Old Wind is what ends off the morse code message. Hmmmmm.

Ah, Courage the Cowardly Dog. Never would have thought someone would make a game about that cartoon. Makes sense though, a perfect spooky scary game. As an aside, I think the best example of gross Nickelodeon is their cartoon series, Grossology. It literally has gross in it. 😆 Though, Mr. Meaty was THE grossest and horrifying show I've watched as a child. It traumatized me from eating meat that was not thoroughly cooked to the point it was burnt. Which is why I could I meat my mom cooked. 😆 She would burn it to charcoal! (Not really that bad but still very burnt.)
Oh god... Mr. Meaty... I forgot about that show... at the same time.idk why I even watched it back then, I was a strange kid xD. But now that I think of it, yea, Nick does have cartoons the were on the gross side of things.
Was Grossology a Nickelodeon show? I believe it was on a different channel. Yep. It was featured on Discovery Kids. Alongside that was the one about the girl raised by bugs.
I have to regularly remind myself that I did not hallucinate Mr. Meaty.
I remember when I used to watch courage the cowardly dog all the time… one of my top 10 shows
@@daleharden1749 I keep forgetting about it but, then, something always manages to remind me about it and I wish it stayed forgotten.
I absolutely LOVED Courage The Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd, and Eddy, and Dexter's Labratory
The Old Wife? Muriel is gone, Eustace is nowhere to be found. She followed the rules, he broke them. Perhaps an allegory for Eustace being behind Muriel's death.
Ed, Edd, & Eddy was my favorite as a kid. I just wish there was a special episode that shows us what they've are up to as they get older.
Yes! Ed, Edd and Eddy was also my number one favorite cartoon show! With Dexter, Cow and Chicken and Johnny Bravo following behind. I also want to see a follow up on Ed, Edd and Eddy as they grow up. The most confusing part of the show is the ending with Jonny. The show can't just end like that with that tease!
Mirror Mat’s joy is our joy
I used to absolutely love Courage the Cowardly Dog! I loved how different and horror based it was instead of the usual possitive friendship and happiness shows. The basic premise for every episode was that Courage is like the dog son of Muriel a nice elderly lady who is married to Ustess who is just like the worst and hates Courage. The husband and wife relationship is like a real old timey borderline abusive one but in that context they are in love. But basically Muriel could do better and Courage kinda knows that. Anyway the story start with some strange new thing usually that Muriel being a trusting person falls for but Ustusess even though he doesn't know anything is wrong disagrees with Muriel because he's a pessimist who hates change. Meanwhile Courage can see things aren't as they seem and whatever dark horror there is is trying to take control of both Muriel and Ustess. He doesn't like Ustess but tries to save them both since Muriel likes him, even when he never tries to protect her from the horrible creatures and will leave her in danger in signs of trouble. The show ends either with all of them back in the house and no one but Courage knoms what happened or with them back to normal with a few side effects of the story plot. Each episode ends with Ustess jump scaring Courage. At least that's my understanding it admittedly has been a few years since I watched the show.
I love the conversations between Mat and Mat Pat. They’re so nice to listen to :]
In love with the editing
I'm glad Mirror mat is growing more bold with these

my favorite childhood cartoon show was samurai jack, and i loved to see adult swim taking the wheel and finishing the series
Do a film theory of Courage the Cowardly dog
Tbh, Adventure time is my favorite Cartoon Network show, and it is actually pretty scary and creepy, and disturbing, some of the animation is disturbing, and the storyline is creepy, especially the newest series, where Jake was dead after Finn woke up from a dream of them having adventures, that down right creepy and disturbing.
adventure time is just like a reeeally bad acid trip

If you want to get through the part after the memorial, you will need to use a re-shader on the game to reveal the path… at least, I think that’s what it’s called.
A show I used to love was that Jake the American dragon show, I loved the art style and the plot was so stupid it was genius. Like dude, you’re a dragon, bite him don’t let him hold you. If anyone remembers this show, let me know!
I LOVED this show. I was so intensely obsessed with it for a time as a teenager. Then the art style changed and I had a hard time sticking with it.
I only ever watched one Courage The Cowardly Dog episode when I was a kid and it made me paranoid for a week.

I wonder if muriel’s funeral thing was a reference to the fact that her voice actor actually DID pass away.
Wow. Cow and Chicken. Haven't thought about that show in ages. Anybody else remember the episode where they went into that house full of particularly styled women who were eating the carpet? It only aired the one time, for now obvious reasons.
Between this and Andy's Apple Farm, sometimes I wonder if the creators actually don't know how to code and just pass off the glitches as game mechanics. If so, then they certainly know how to market a game and make it interesting.
No wonder we can have MatPat create theories about these and succeed every time!
Hard to say which CN show was my favorite growing up, cause there was Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Dexter's Lab, Ed Edd N Eddy, etc. So many good shows
dude, just watching this gameplay brought back that subtle feeling of dread i always got when watching courage :) terrifyingly nostalgic
Courage the Cowardly Dog was a show that I enjoyed as a kid, but I never understood why. It also was a show that actually gave me nightmares too, but still I watched it anyway.
And it's actually in typing this comment that I realized why: Courage just wanted to be loved. Muriel was the only person that ever truly, unambiguously, unconditionally loved Courage, and Courage held onto that.
The dialogue between you and matt makes me happy, not just because im a fellow matt but becuase you weren’t eager to shut him up and start the video like it can be sometimes with people working behind the scenes, it always pissed me off when people call out a behind the scenes worker for making a comment or having an opinion
I love the troubleshooting and "well, we have to do this now" and the hinting mirrormatt does
*Something Creepy Happens*
Courage: "this is normal 😃"
I was so genuinely terrified of Courage the Cowardly Dog as a child that I had to hide under a table whenever it was my cousins’ turn to pick the channel and they picked that show
A little bit of advice, that file telling you to go to the right did have meaning. I will also confirm that you were spot on with the noises in the big dark room, once you mold the audio you will be able to pick how you want to go. I hope you continue this game, as you've just scratched the surface.
One of My childhood shows. Last 2 episode were actually sad and not scary
Were the last two episode with courage at the vet and the flashbacks? I dont wanna spoil anything for anyone who reads this, since that's just a good, but sad episode

i think it would be better for the game to be finished before he touches it.
The fact that popular Indie games in my teens happened only a couple of years ago really puts things in perspective.
I LOVED "The Kids Next door"! It was just really interesting to me to have, like, adults as villains, while kids were the good guys and super creative with their costumes and tools and stuff. Although, I think, there might've been some bad kids too, used by the adults. 🤔

My favourite nostalgic CW toon was the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. The creepy way Mandy opened each episode stays with me to this day.
A more recent favorite of mine is Steven Universe. It also has some horrifying moments
I like how he says “what WAS your favorite” then he said “mine IS”

That comparison between CN and Nickelodeon is spot on. The former can do scary cartoons. They can bring psychological uncanny horror(Courage), existential horror(that one episode of Omniverse where Ben recreates the Universe), and just plain old folktale horror(just the Lich in Adventure Time).
In contrast, Nickelodeon can do funny, but very adult and gross scenes, like the raunchiness of Ren and Stimpy, to the crippled images of Spongebob.
I liked so many, but one that’s kind of weird/could be a little “dark” was grim adventures of Billy and Mandy.
Code Lyoko, Code Name kids next door, Courage cowardly dog, Teen Titans, Ben 10, Fosters, Samurai Jack, Juniper Lee. I bet there are some odd ones I don’t remember right away but those were some of the bigger ones that played pretty often

I was at the transition between toddler and kid when I started watching Courage the Cowardly Dog and I remember that it and Animaniacs were a very large part of my childhood. I had to watch it on Netflix after a while and would binge both constantly. The show has a very grim tone and (if you knew the series prior) an episode could leave you with a lot of anticipation just to see what disturbing thing would happen.

It gave me a value of things in life at a younger age.
Courage is so nostalgic
I miss Stephanie, I just do. I've been trying to stay loyal to this channel and while I enjoy some bits, overall it just feels empty without her. Also, if you're going to banter with Mirror Matt, maybe put a mic on him?? We can barely hear his commentary in the background and he talks so softly.
I remember when I was like 3-5 sitting in my parent's room and watching the really old Nick toons and cartoon network shows at 4am because they changed the schedule of the shows to prevent scaring kids.
Anyway, some of my favourite shows were rugrats and catdog. I also really miss The amazing world of Gumball. That was so good.

I think the path is only audio cue based. The path started when the sound played, and then the sound played again as you got to the invisible edge.
So i think the puzzle is to move forward until you hear the sound. The only issue is figuring out if you turn left or right when the cue plays
