  • As of Season 3, some information in the video is no longer accurate:
    • 2:47 Sombra should now do 9.375 damage per bullet rather than 8.75 to hacked targets.
    • 5:45 Ramattra no longer has a potential infinite duration ultimate, and is now capped at 20 seconds.
Nonetheless it should not detract from the concepts discussed.

These are some pretty good suggestions, maybe for gms it's different but i can miss some sombra shots from time to time, and if you happen to miss your target you usually run out of ammo exactly when they are on 50 hp and have to translocate back or they just escape due to the 1.5 second window to kill them. Meaning you either need to hack at the perfect moment or have another hero help you. That wasn't the problem before because you can take any hero into a fair 'gunfight' by hacking them for 5 seconds. They lose all their flashbangs and helix rockets, but you don't have any damage abilities either, so better aim wins

Not saying some of these ideas aren't worth considering, but a number of them would only serve to exacerbate the problems people have with her abilities like hack. Personally, I'd like to see Sombra's health total brought more in line with a character like Tracer's given how much utility it given to her in being able escape a situation freely, especially when we consider the impact that abilities like hack can provide to swaying a team fight. From there, I believe some power can be returned to her kit in small doses, making larger adjustments where needed.

I think the duration would have to be fair, and the cooldown would have to be fairly low, but it would space out the team in an interesting way, and it's a unique way to counter pharah-mercy. • @nixtypikal
    @nixtypikal Před rokem

This is a really cool video! The first idea is one I really like. I have a few of my own that I'd like to share
One idea I had about how to increase the impact of Sombra and her hack while retaining its "anti-ability" functionality is to change it from straight up disabling (active) abilities and instead have it increase the cooldown duration of any ability on cooldown when they are hacked and any ability used while hacked (abilities without cooldowns would be given them and effectively be her normal hack). This would result in the person she's attacking have to make a choice between using an ability to kill, run away from, or force a teleport from Sombra and not have that ability for awhile or preserve that ability but have a harder time fending her off.
Another idea for Opportunist is that instead of dealing extra damage to hacked targets Sombra deals more damage (say like 15%) to targets under 50% health sort of like Echo's Focusing Beam. I know this goes against the idea that she shouldn't just be doing damage but I feel it goes along with the rest of Opportunist quite nicely as it incentivizes you to pick off weak targets that you can see through walls.
Another thing that fits with Sombra's character both in personality and her gameplay in some fashion is the control of information. Making hacked targets be able to be seen through walls by your allies was a good idea imo. An extension of providing information to your allies is denying information to your enemies. What if being hacked made the hacked target not be able to see their allies through walls and vice versa? In higher level games or any with a full team in vc it wouldn't be too much of a problem other than for Kiriko. But in games with less cohesion it would further enable Sombra or her allies to pick off enemies through a denial of information. Another thought I've seen in this direction is to make it so that hack conceals the UI of the target for its duration.
Lastly a couple more smaller things that I feel would make Sombra less annoying to fight against are
    1. Make it so that there is either a maximum range Sombra can teleport to for her translocator and/or have it make a small beeping sound so it is easier to find and destroy.
    2. Make stealth have a time limit that discourages being in stealth for a long time by making it have an increased cooldown if it ends naturally or from taking damage.

These are some good suggestions but I don’t think a lot of people understand why the devs wanted to make her more dmg based. She had the lowest win rate in the game in Overwatch 1. Removing the amount of dmg she has makes it where she has to depend on her teammates which at least in a comp setting are random players. It’s the same reason why Zen is meta in higher elo and not played in Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Characters need to be playable when you are alone and Sombra wouldn’t be with these changes. The damage buff has to stay. Also based on annoyance the most annoying thing prior to ow2 was the ability lock. Making it harder for her to be able to go on targets is the best method to make her less of a nuisance to the player base. I think either making a range for translocator, getting rid of perma stealth, or having to wait a second or two uncloaked to be able to hack a target

In regards to your first idea, I think the concept that this makes sombra into a dual character very cool
We could reinforce this by making sombra not want to teleport away from battle which adds a greater risk vs reward sentiment to the engagement
Maybe hack duration is reduced by a second or two when she teleports away and the sound translocator makes is louder so you'll want to place it further from the fight
Forcing sombra to actively stay in combat and risk death if she can think she could win the dual
This also means if she loses the dual without dying (by teleporting out) the greater distance from the fight + the reduction of the back duration will effective make sombras tp away into a mini respawn

about her tp i have an idea
1 , if she tp out of fight she get the hack effect on her self , it will make people give effort into hiding their tp far away and you need to take the risk of throwing in middle of battle to run instead of no brainer
2 , she could attach it to an Allie to teleport to and on the ground but if the teammate dies or someone breake the tp she instantly force teleport
to her trance locator this way she need be aware of her placement and force her to play safe and place it far ( so she take more time to get into the objective) or risk it and maybe het flanked

My take on how to fix Sombra:
    - Change to support hero
    - Remove stealth
    - Revert hack into a powerful interupt ability but on a long cooldown that requires a skillshot similar to sleep dart that now uses stealth's old keybind (Shift on PC)
    - Translocator can now only be placed on healthpacks and will hack it
    - Add ability to heal allies with old hack keybind (Right click on PC) and can offer burst healing when her hacked healthpack is avalible
    - Remove the damage effect from her ultimate and rework into a defensive ult that if timed well interupts enemy abilities and buffs allies
There are some issues with this design but I feel like this is the kind of direction I would like to see blizzard take. Changing Sombra to a support would allow her to regain some of her more powerful utility while aligning with the new role identities established in OW2. Removing her steath, making hack a skillshot ability and changing her playstyle to play behind her team will allow her enemies to better track her movements and play around her powerful abilities.

I mean good Sombras will unstealth when they start hacking so they can shoot the target faster anyway. If all you're doing as Sombra is running around invis hacking people you're not doing anything other than being a fly in their ear. The only thing that would realistically do is make her setup at health packs take a second longer. And she's detectable when hacking anything so someone can turn around and see her. Brig swinging her mace around, mei using her spray, dva spam, etc. There's a lot of ways for Sombras to be caught out if they aren't playing well. And most don't know how to play well. Honestly if you made invis have a timer (Let's say 15 seconds) you wind up incentivizing Sombras to be more active in the fight rather than run around in stealth half the time hacking someone and running away.

    @jelruv6721 Před rokem

I agree with the Sombra rework suggestions in this video, but at the end of the day, I think her play style makes way more sense for the support role. Honestly, in most movies, games, shows, books, etc hackers tend to work behind the scenes to enable their teammates to complete a goal. They're not usually the ones running around doing direct damage to enemies. And that's why her existence as a damager in this game is a pain and kill joy.
It would great if there was a character that was a hard counter to Sombra. Kiriko can cleanse a hack, but that only goes so far. Torb's turret used to be good against her, but for some reason the devs wanted to allow Sombra to hack it comfortably without it shooting back.
Sombra can be invisible as long as she wants, hack while invisible, lock players abilities briefly, has increased damage to hacked targets, can teleport away instantly with no delay, shuts down a lot of ultimates, and her ultimate does damage (which honestly makes no sense). She either needs to be a support that focuses heavily on hacking not so much on damage or a damager with less convenient/annoying gimmicks that has more direct damaging abilities. She could be hacking summoned objects as her damaging abilities instead of players for once. I mean, That's clearly what she was doing in her animated short (without the summoning part). I know that wouldn't happen though.
Although Overwatch is not a typical shooting game, this is the only shooting game I've played that has a character with annoying stuff like this. The only counter to Sombra is good teamwork, where teammates actually actively help each other survive, but that is unbelievable RARE to find in solo queue. No one gives a shit about their support. When I play dps, I'm very aggressive against Sombra to get her to back off my teammates if I can.

Sombra is such a hard character to balance imo.
shes somewhat of a support but still a dps, she supports her team by stopping enemies and giving good info to her team, and she can do a good amount of damage, its kind of like how current Symmetra is, her tp and turrets are mostly her support usage but still her kit is still damage focused.
Her whole kit is so fitting for a character with her playstyle, which is a backline killer and an ability stopper, anything that gets removed from her kit just makes her feel so weird and not right.
I think if her rework removes a single ability from her kit she may get used even less, because she is 100% one of the most fun characters to play with, being able to teleport, stay invisible and sneak around, and cancel things. Anything that gets removed won't feel anything like the same character and more like a new character with an old ones few abilities.
Just praying her rework doesn't remove translocator or EMP because they are some huge parts of her kit, I can 100% invis being a long cooldown ability or giving it a certain amount of time you can be invis just like 1.0 OW1 sombra was.
idk if any of this makes sense but I will say you have some pretty good ideas for fixing a character who is such a hard character to balance, just because 1 small buff she can be broken or 1 small nerf she can be literal F tier.

However let’s keep in mind Sombra is a damage hero and she needs to do as much damage as quick as possible so taking damage off of her Ult and making her hack need more action to be useful creates a gap. Causing her damage time to be come too long and making her useless. I believe that damaging a Sombra should remove hack or maybe some type of action should be available to block hacking. Like maybe Sombra get slowed down when she hacks and becomes visible. This would make her ability necessary for a more strategic time and place then her doing it shooting and running away.

    - hack fx 2: during the first 3 seconds of the hacking, every source of ult charge will give the victim NEGATIVE ult charge x2 if your ult charge is between 5% and 95%
    - hack fx 3: If an ability is used under hacked condition, that ability will go on cooldown with extra 10 seconds
    - hack fx 4: 20% less damage to sombra, hacking sombra will do 20% extra dmg to the victim, both dmg modifications apply unless you are an enemy sombra.
    - EMP: applies these fx to every enemy, but EMP hack extends 10% extra dmg to allies.

  • @kingkillaway1617
    @kingkillaway1617 Před rokem

I do really enjoy these ideas. Honestly, one thing I feel needs fixed for sombra is a minimum damage requirement to stop a hack. Because, right now 1 point of damage can stop a potential hack, making Dva the best character to counter her. When, Dva is one of the characters that Sombra should be focused on hacking in order to shut down a dive comps. I feel as though a minimum damage of say, 30 or even 20 damage in order to stop the hack. Still easy to achieve, yet opens a window of opportunity for Sombra's to be able to pull off more hacks in the long run. It also makes it easier for Sombra to play with her team in team fights as she can scour the edge of fights, rather than needing to completely backline flank.
I also agree with some of the other comments around her invisibility, it should not be infinite, or in a more radical case shouldn't exist at all. A more agreeable ability in my mind would be something akin to Hanzo's sonic arrow allowing both her and her team to scout enemies, or Moria's fade, where she can dip in and out of the fight giving her more survivability. These are just suggestions but I feel her invisiblity is worth looking at even further.
In terms of translocation, it's.... Well, it's not fun, either to play with or against. It's a panic button and often times is utterly worthless at actually doing anything unless you have a set location to teleport back to. But, in a fight without it already being set or it was destroyed, it's a worthless button, when something more useful could be there. If, we were to give Sombra a speed boost fade like ability on a mid to long cooldown and short active timer, that say, allows her to travel through a wall, it would allow her to get to hacked health packs and back faster to rejoin team fights than what she's currently capable of. It would also do well for her as a flank, making her decide whether to use it to get a possible pick on an enemy support/backline, or to regain health during fights, or even as a way to disengage in bad situations. (I realize that this suggestion is going to be very controversial and I could absolutely see how it could be extremely broken, but it is just an idea so please don't yell at me.)
As for what could replace translocation, I feel a small disrupting pulse wave around Sombra could fit with her kit and work well. Perhaps maybe 5 to 10 meters around her? As Sombra needs to get close to deal optimal damage anyway, something that punishes diving enemies could work well in her favor. It could perhaps slow enemies that get too close, or apply the hack debuff while in range without locking their abilities. Or as a way to reduce enemies damage output by say... 10% as if she's hacking their weapons themselves? Or even as a type of debuff to healing, not a full anti-heal but it reduces healing received similar to cauterize in Paladins?
Something that I feel could be added to her hack is also perhaps a bit controversial. Allowing her to instead of disabling certain deployables like Sym's/Torb's turrets and Ashe's Bob, instead turning them against the enemy team for a few seconds. Imagine Ashe throws out Bob and Sombra hacks it and for 3 seconds Bob turns against the enemy team surprising them and possibly getting a few kills in the process. It would incentivize the enemy team to carefully plan when and where to use these as it could backfire on them if a Sombra is skilled enough to capitalize on poor placements or defensive lines. I feel that that could make Sombra feel both more engaging to play and more of a viable threat to certain playstyles. (This idea also follows the line of thought that Sombra could hack a Sym teleporter and use that with her team to rush the enemy). It also requires careful planning and team play from the Sombra to use this well.
As for EMP. It's not worthless mind you, perhaps one of the better tools in her kit, yet it feels rather lackluster in game. Applying the Hack debuff and disabling shields fits... But imagine if Sombra could fully lock down an aggressive team, by literally locking them in place? It wouldn't freeze them like Mei, but would instead throw up circular walls around anyone caught inside making it impossible for them to escape. Enemy supports could still heal their team from the outside, but anyone caught inside wouldn't be allowed to disengage from the fight, nor the Sombra's team. This could perhaps last maybe 4 - 6 seconds? Plenty of time to capitalize.
Or if that idea isn't something you'd enjoy (as I'm sure it could get frustrating and perhaps too useful at winning fights). Why not instead an AOE effect where anyone that enters is debuffed with reduced healing (or anti-heal that could be cleansed) and the hack debuff? Perhaps it lasts 7 - 10 seconds in a 15 meter circle from where Sombra cast it?
Although, I do feel her EMP could also just be left alone as is.
Regardless, this was really long, but I do hope this spurs more ideas in everyone as to how Sombra could be come a more engaging and satisfying Hero to both play as and against. Please let me know your ideas, I love coming up with ways that Sombra in particular could be reworked.

  • @nathanielnagano-deschamps7181

I think Sombra should play in the Support Role instead of the DPS role. This change would 1 dilute the DPS category and add another to a less represented role and would add a new design idea to it.
2, introducing this new idea into support role would widen it's design space. The disruptor role which she would fill would be one that is excellent at skirmishes: Hacking health packs to support team mates instead of outright healing them herself.
This could also be an interesting trade off: sacrifice a healer for someone who can shut down enemy abilities?
To do this I would change hack to silence enemy players for 2s but have a debuff place that lasts longer. During this debuff period, enemies would have an effect that will tell the player that a hack is being performed and if they don't damage sombra before it is completed it will have additional effects.
    These effects could be:
    -an additional 1s silence
    -ultimate charge decrease
    -antiheal
    -slow
    -Sonic Arrow effect
-or direct knowledge of how their ability cooldowns for 3s.
Because she is moved to healer her hack will also further boost health pack regen, grant increased healing after pick up, and will highlight it for every player on your team.

Honestly I think apart from the last one (due to simple movement speed) these changes could definitely work to fix some of sombra’s issues and make her less annoying to play against.
I think these would also pair well with a change to stealth, with something like reducing its duration from an infinite amount of time, down to like 6-8 seconds and give it a longer cast time, but make it where she isn’t knocked out of invis when shot. I love the 3rd idea the most, but I have ny own idea I want to throw on the table
still no opportunist damage buff, and not sure how this would affect emp, but what if hack was a channeled ability? as in, if you want to keep an enemy hacked, you have to hold the button the whole time, still with an initial delay and breaking the hack and putting it on cooldown if she gets shot while using it so there can be some counterplay. the idea would then be to interupt or disable key enemy abilities at opportune times to enable your teammates to do their work. I believe this would be less frustrating to play against because if a Sombra tries to pick you off you know you'll have your abilities for her, and when you are hacked she cant use anything else either, but that's also where a concern rolls in; is it good to disable your enemy abilities (importantly still leaving their primary fires available) while you disable yourself entirely to do so? it might be worthwhile to have targets take damage while being hacked by Sombra so that hacking enemies doesnt leave you as disabled as the enemy you're hacking, or if not that then have the ult charge allies build up on targets you have hacked also apply to your own ult charge so that it contributes to your ult economy much more, then rework EMP to be much more fun and interesting so it feels worth it but still fun and fair to play against
    fantastic editing btw

One of the most evil suggestions I've ever seen is to make objects Sombra hacks (Torb, Bob, Symm Tp, etc) basically switch teams for its duration.

  • @astupidlylongnamethatstoolong

Adding skill to hacking targets sounds like the best way to make it less frustrating and unfair. And this is coming from a guy who kept getting chain hacked back in OW1 as a tank (please, let me play) and hacked often enough that I wasn't allowed to make space at all (Zen Sombra is a surprisingly painful combo, Allowing people to hurt the discorded target if they try to make space is big pain)

I actually think sombra is in a pretty good place right now. Even if she hacks a target in the enemy back line, you need to be cracked with your aim to even one clip them (not counting different hero hit boxes that make it harder to do this).
At top level, where there’s more peels for your teammates, you’re usually not even one clipping someone. The hack doesn’t even block out abilities for that long and they’re locked out from being hacked again for a big chunk of time leaving you unable to hack them out of their ult once they get their abilities back up. There’s so many more heroes that feel frustrating and unfair when it comes to getting killed by them. Maybe she can be reworked but it seems like people only want her reworked to make her worse, not better in a different way.

Sombra could be reworked to be sort of in between support and dps. I had this idea where you could drop her damage but give her the ability to stockpile hacked health packs that she can drop for teammates (or can be picked up by quick enemies, like lifeweaver's leave the battlefield effect.)

In my opinion this points to the biggest issue with overwatch: stop balancing with numbers, start giving people actually interesting passives that makes their kit complicated and interesting.
