  • If this tutorial is too long for you, try my quickfire video which is an edited version of this one. find it here: • How-to: Format your SS...
    In this video, I'll show you how to format your SSD as APFS on a Mac.
    This is useful for storing your sample libraries, and so long as you don't want to use the drive on a Windows-based system.
    If your primary use (like me) is for storing samples, you definitely will want to format the SSD as soon as you get it out of the box.
    Note: This video assumes you've bought one of the many external SSD's that ship formatted as exFAT, which is not recommended for use with sample libraries.
    If you're not blind and curious why there's a strange voice talking whenever i do something, it's because I myself am blind, and made this tutorial to benefit those with sight, and also those without.
    This is why you will hear a strange woman talking to you and reading out everything you can already see on-screen.

    I learned 3 new things - instrument samples better played off of APFS, how to do this, and how useful the reading is... four things actually.. the generosity of the collective is incredible.

    Thanks for that, I'm totally new to Mac so I was a bit confused as how to format and change the file system, I must say it's a lot easier in Windows Apple should sort out this overly complicated and frankly illogical method without any explanation of how to format and change the file system, then you wouldn't have to waste your time explaining how to do it, I have now managed to change my new 1TB nvme ssd from ExFat to APFS thanks to your clear instructions, Cheers Mate

    Hi Andre. I have Multiple Sclerosis and what happened was my old iMac was quite old and had a conventional 3.2 Terabyte had drive in it which had been formatted in extended journaled, and also partitioned in two. One partition had my old operating system on it. When I upgraded one of my operating system to Big Sur. The upgrade didn't do a very good job of converting the Hard Drive to APSF and it locked up the hard dive. I now can't change which drive I boot from. I was hoping I can just drag copy the old system onto an external hard drive on my newer computer. Then boot from it to recover my old photos and info from it.
    If that makes sense ?

    • @TheOnjLouis
      @TheOnjLouis  Před 3 lety

      Hmm, I didn’t even think about that.
      On my Intel Mac I have Paragon NTFS and EXTFS installed, but it’s not on this one so you might be right about that.
      Didn’t even consider it.
      Definitely check on that before hand though, as mine might be showing things it can’t do. I did restore from a time machine and remove those apps, so maybe they left some dirty code behind in the format window.

      @@leftofcenter4 If you would kindly take the time to read the youtube description, you would realise that I, and a lot of my followers are blind/visually impaired, so I did this for *them* not you. If you happen to benefit from it, great, but please don’t come here and complain that I did something to benefit blind people as well. You failed to understand that I am visually impaired, and I teach visually impaired students that use VoiceOver, IE: The voice you hear.
      Although *you* may find it 'superfluous' that sound is not for you. It's for the hundreds of other blind people that *have* benefited from this video, and not just someone sighted clicking around with a mouse saying 'click here, do this, press that' which is all too prevalent on youtube as it is.
      I am here to redress that.
