Part of it that Brits love listen to American celebrities who are critical of America. That said, yeah, Bill was brilliant and deserved more attention and credit. He died way, way too young.

There's no question Clive was setting 'em up for Bill to knock 'em down. That's more or less how interviews at the time went and Clive was certainly a master at it. Bill for his part actually seems pretty reluctant to play along in those moments to be honest. But there are also some more authentic moments in this interview as well and you can tell the difference when they happen. The "one man race" joke Hicks makes regarding Lenny Bruce. The Dick Van Dyke stuff. Merely being able to say "oral sex" versus having to actually do it every night on stage. Those weren't bits within Hicks' act. He was just playing off of Anderson in those moments. For a 6-minute clip I'd say there's plenty of unscripted "riffing" going on between these two.
Agreed. I think there was a "culture clash" at first and they didn't really get each other but did warm up eventually. Bill did seem to really chuckle. What a shame to lose him, and RIP Bill, you legend.

I'm no fan of Clive Anderson but you ARE aware that Clive is a reason got his end-of-life career? Clive & his team were in Montreal for the comedy festival and saw Hicks and wondered why he wasn't a major TV star. Leno wouldn't have him, Letterman cut him. It was Clive Anderson (and his producers) who put Bill Hicks on British TV, they were the reason so many of his sketches (esp from the Montreal festival) were show on British TV, and basically gave him proper high-profile... and then he got his cancer diagnosis!

Bill Hicks is definitely one of the few to be able to do this so well in interviews/ stand-up. Two absolute legends. No wonder they got on so well.

Please people, this was one of those times when humour was actually allowed to exist, you do Hicks no favours by automatically assuming the person asking him questions is trying to sell out the free world.
Bill loved Clive and stated he was his favourite UK comedian. I've never seen Bill laugh so much in anyone elses company whilst being interviewed. Clive is not for everyone, but those of us that love him and his unique style miss him dearly, although we miss Bill more as he isn't around altogether. Hicks is Lord.
Bill Hicks... so profound and spiritually evloved.. he no longer needed to exist on the physical plane... thankfully we still have this kind of footage to remind us of old souls like Bill who are with us for a short time but shake up the foundations of common belief systems! Clive is a great interviewer as long as he's interviewing someone who can keep up with his wit and laugh off any of the comments he makes ( which of course are all in jest and the interviewee should realize this ) and Bill knows this. Hence its a great interview.
That was a very nervous interview years ago that seemed to settle as Bill got to do a few lines from his routine. I don't think Clive Anderson's frantic delivery suited Bill's laid back persona but at least some of Bill's outlooks on life translated well into the UK audience. I think this is why Bill did very well here in the UK and was more appreciated here than in his native US.

No, it wasn't. I pointed out moments of original stuff. This way other fans of Hicks can skip the jokes they've heard a million times if they felt like it. I did a nice thing. I did a very nice thing.
You people have to understand this was before the internet was around, so you could rehash a lot of your material. TV was really the only source of being seen and heard. Now you practically have to scrap everything and write new stuff on a year basis, like Louis C.K. Hicks has been a big inspiration in my life, true hero.
Clives interviews could be awkward in his Britishness but he would skewer deserving dickhead celebs on this show. Jeffrey Archer, the humourless Bee Gees etc no chat show has come close to this since and i miss it. I think they are genuinely just playing each other here(they were friends), Bill is killing himself laughing at Clives jokes. something that is hard to do - make a great comedian laugh.
The Beegees interview did go too far, the group had been given a misleadingly soft impression of how Clive would deal with them and then he was relentlessly savage, not backing down even when all three members were visibly uncomfortable. Still, neither party was "in the wrong", and for the most part Clive's specificistic needling is a great bromide for talk show hosting in general.

All comedians do this b4 a show or vid release, it helps practice the timing and publicise him, watch any comedian on a panel show 2. Regrettably, he passed away, so couldn't write any new material after 94. Fully love and respect everything he wrote and no comedian can equal the obvious messages he was trying to tell us all
- Those mentioning that they're surprised at the reception Bill gets over there, I'll note that Doug Stanhope is a fucking rockstar over there and the vast majority rarely know his name or face here. He's done spots as "The Voice of America" and is just incredibly well received. Given their reception of Bill and Doug and their offering of Ricky Gervais I'm actually beginning to wonder if their sense of humor is better overall. All three are legends to me.
this is only a short interview on tv so don't be surprised if bill isn't expressing himself completely. He's only there to get people to watch him perform. I think bill is really entertaining in his real interviews. watch the other videos of him on public access tv or his one on one interviews.
LOL! I love to poke at Brits. I'm in Cairo and a member of the BCA here. The Brits love to poke at America and Americans, and I give it right back; but it's all in fun. I love British comics for their cunning and subtlety, but I have to admit that I do love comics with attitude also. Bill Burr is a great current example.

However, I'd like to thank you for providing me with an experience that I've never had before and am probably never likely to have again: hearing Jerry Seinfeld and Clive Anderson mentioned in the same breath. That's genuine Comedy Gold, and I thank you most sincerely for it!
I'm pretty sure Clive Anderson and his production company were the ones that filmed "Relentless" in Montreal, "Revelations" in London and helped get Bill a TV show greenlit. Oh, and of course significantly boosting his profile so that most of us got to know about Bill Hicks today. So as much as some like to criticise Clive Anderson he was pretty instrumental in Hicks going to the next level of his career.

Clive Anderson is fucking brilliant. Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about him. Hicks would have enjoyed the British comedy scene. I could see him now taking up root in Edinburgh during August and never leaving.

However, I'd like to thank you for providing me with an experience that I've never had before and am probably never likely to have again: hearing Jerry Seinfeld and Clive Anderson mentioned in the same breath. That's genuine Comedy Gold, and I thank you most sincerely for it!
I'm pretty sure Clive Anderson and his production company were the ones that filmed "Relentless" in Montreal, "Revelations" in London and helped get Bill a TV show greenlit. Oh, and of course significantly boosting his profile so that most of us got to know about Bill Hicks today. So as much as some like to criticise Clive Anderson he was pretty instrumental in Hicks going to the next level of his career.
I think both guys are hilarious in this interview.... And I don't think Bill and Clive hate each other as much as a lot of commenters seem to think they do.
Clive Anderson is fucking brilliant. Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about him.
Hicks would have enjoyed the British comedy scene. I could see him now taking up root in Edinburgh during August and never leaving.
