    Keep doing what you're doing! As a long retired, and not land-locked sailor, I'm having great vicarious fun watching your progress. You haven't said, but it always bears repeating: things should have been done correctly the first time. If that had been the case, much of what you're doing now wouldn't be necessary. You're building a boat that will last you for 40 years and more. Congratulations. You give me a lift every week.

    Every episode you release is so impressive. A little tip, When it's cold and you want to get laminate to harden, infrared heaters can work. If you want better thermal insulation, you can use a ten millimeter thick polyethylene foam that also occurs as a sleeping pad in tents. The material has dense cells and therefore does not absorb water. In colors such as black or dark gray, the material can be visible with its matte surface. The material can be attached with contact or carpentry glue. I have done this on my boat on the hull and under deck sometimes visible or hidden under other materials. The boat feels warmer and less damp.

    Here's something I did to avoid head thru hull exit. - Routed a 12 volt line to the deck pump out. Where I installed a 12v plug in with a cap. Put an off/forward/reverse switch on the line back at the panel. Changed the deck pump out fitting to accommodate the threads on a macerator pump. When I want to pump the holding tank under way I attach the macerator to the new fitting and plug in the 12 Volt plug to the new 12v fitting near the pump out. The macerator has a 5' hose on it with a 6" iron pipe at the end (to keep it below the water line. Then I pump the head out by flipping the switch. Once empty I reverse the switch and fill the holding tank with sea water (takes me about 60 seconds) and then empty the tank again. Keeps my head smelling clean, eliminates the thru hull issue. Also keeps the port authorities happy because you have no head discharge below the water line. And after a few rinses using forward/reverse switch the the hose and macerator are clean and ready to be stowed. At first I was worried the macerator pump might not lift the water up high enough but that was not a problem. An additional benefit - I could pump out my head into jerry cans if there was no pump out available. (like when you're living aboard while on the hard.)

    One thing you can do to attach the rub rail, particularly as you have such a thick outer skin, is to use screw in blind 316 screw sockets. These have a course thread on the outside to epoxy and screw into the fibre glass then you screw the rub rail into the blind internal thread in the inserts.

    • @SailingMagicCarpet

I’ve wanted to make a production batch of those in several sizes but it didn’t work out that way. I might just do a design and get them priced from a company that machines a lot of parts for me. what about fiberglassing some brackets to the outside of the hull and bolting the new bump rail to those? That way there's no hull penetration at all, and at worst a bracket breaks off in a bad bump rather than a bolt shearing through the hull.

    • @travelradiocoza
      @travelradiocoza Před 2 lety +2

      I did the same on my boat and it worked a charm. The added bonus was that the water that washes up over the deck immediately runs off and does not stay on deck and suffer ingress into the deck and beams as it doesn't go into the hull at all as well as sitting proud of the hull providing extra protection as it sit slightly wider of the hull.

    Wow, excellent progress. I agree that working from a "clean slate" will actually speed up the finish.

    3 M tape or emblem tape works well to attach stuff . Often used to hold boat windows in .it is what holds the emblems on your car. Might be an option for the rub rail .

    Just carn't wait to see the final product will be so beautiful. Its strange how just a small amount of moisture can do so much damage and of course is also unhealthy. Bless you both.

    You don't need to go all the way through the glass to attach the rub rails. Thus preventing moisture intrusion in the future. If the glass is an inch thick go in 3/4 inch.
