    Something else that’s interesting about Air Goryeo is that it’s named about the historical kingdom that united the entire Korean Peninsula, not specific to North Korea. This is something North Korea does a lot to assert itself as the true Korea with historical ties. North Korea calls itself 북조선 (but South Korea doesn’t). In Japanese and Chinese, it’s 朝鮮 (Joseon). This isn’t a translation of DPRK or North Korea, it’s the old name of Korea. So basically the old Korean and new Korea. Making Air Goryeo, literally Old Korean Airlines, fitting considering their fleet.

      True. But sadly they retired most of their aircraft. Today they are only flying 2 An-148 and 2 Tu-204. The Tupolews are from the 90s and the Antonows from 2013 and 2015. So their current active Fleet is quit the opposite of what you would think after seeing the video.

    • @davidmescher2526
      @davidmescher2526 Před 4 lety +40

      The area where only a DPRK civilian airport could be reached (instead of reaching a civilian airport in China, South Korea, or Russia) is pretty small. Most of the civilian airports in the DPRK are in the northeast, which is fairly close to Vladivostok. (Yanbian, PRC is also quite close.) And if you're more than 50-70 miles from Pyongyang (the only international airport in the DPRK, and the only one not in the northeast portion of the country), you can either land at Dandong, PRC, Seoul, ROK, or Yanbian, PRC.
      Using your theoretical example (Japan to Russia), the geodesic route between Narita (Tokyo) and Sheremetyevo (Moscow) goes to the east of the DPRK, so you'd land in Russia. If we go from further south in Japan (let's say Nagasaki), the geodesic route goes west of the country. So, if you can't land at Seoul or China (due to the emergency), you're not going to be able to reach the DPRK, either.
      Going from Seoul to SVO does go over the DPRK (and pretty close to Pyongyang), that window is still pretty tiny. The Boeing 767 is only going to be closest to Pyongyang for, at most, 15 minutes of its flight. And with its given glide ratio (20:1), it's going to be able to make a safe landing outside the DPRK if it's above 30k feet when the emergency occurs, and the emergency is not a catastrophic loss of structural integrity (i.e. your plane is still in one piece).
