More Details About This Video:
One of the best ways to get your walking or gait pattern back after an injury is aquatic gait exercises. Walking in the water not only takes away some of gravity, but it also allows you to concentrate on getting your correct pattern back. It is a great way to get a workout without a lot of impact on your joints. These gait exercises are a good warm-up before you do an aquatic therapy workout.
It is really important to make sure you have good posture when you are in the pool. It is really easy to move your upper body a lot, but you want to try to keep your upper body straight and upright. Squeeze in your abdominals to help keep that upright position. Using ankle weights can be very beneficial. Not only do they give you some extra resistance, but they also keep your feet on the ground while doing the exercises.
To start off, simply walk forward. Concentrate on a heel to toe walking. When we walk on land, our heels hit first and we roll onto and push off with our toes. Exaggerate this movement while you walk while keeping that upright posture. Then reverse it and go backwards. Now your toes are going to hit first and roll back onto your heels. Try not to lean back when you are doing this, and keep your body upright.
Next, turn sideways. When you step, it is important to keep your toes pointed forward. If you turn your foot out when you step, you are changing the muscles being worked. Finally, march by bringing your knee up toward the surface of the water getting a bend in your knee and hip. Really try to drive your knee upward to get a good stretch. Again, don't lean forward, try to keep your body upright.
Depending on how fast you go, these should take you between 5-10 minutes and is used as a warm-up to your exercises.

I know these videos are probably targeted at an older crowd, but as someone who is much younger and who has had multiple knee injuries and is coming off a knee surgery where I was told I had limited options to remain active, these videos are amazing and I can't thank you enough for your efforts. You're the best! Also, cannon ball away!
Thank you, and you're welcome!! They are definitely for any population :-) I have worked out NFL players in the pool and have them say it was one of the hardest workouts they've done. Good luck with the rest of your recovery!
You're welcome!! Thanks, I will!!
This video is a Godsend for me. Since near-drowning many years ago I have been so afraid of water that I could not not look at pictures or videos of people in water. I was afraid of rain. A friend helped me get up the courage to get in a shallow pool with him and dip under the water several times. Now I walk laps in the lap pool at the gym and I find it relaxing and fun. It helps my arthritic joints more than I thought possible. Now I will start doing an exercise routine in the water, before each workout. Thank you so much.
You're welcome. Glad you are able to enjoy the water.
I have never commented on a youtube video before, but I LOVE you! I am a trainer in NYC and love using your vids as referrals to clients when I can't see them. Great explanations and instructional cues. Well done!!
Thanks!! I'm glad they have helped with your clients.
+Laura Stone It appears you have a contact block on your account...So here is my response:
I was unable to respond to your comment on my video. I don't know anyone personally in that area anymore, but I will ask around with my co-workers, and get back to you if I find anyone. Lots of times you can do a google search of PT reviews by customers/patients. Yelp has a good one. Then you can get honest opinions from the people who got service from the PTs.
Good luck!

Thanks. 😎
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. This one's SO HELPFUL!!!!. When exercising like this, for lower back, does it matter how much of your torso is in water? Do you have a similar video, water-walking for arms??
Thanks! The deeper you are, the less the impact, so it really depends on if you have any pain while doing the exercises. Yes, I have several aquatic videos. You can find them on my channel: czcams.com/users/askdoctorjo

Hi. Thank you for the video. I have a question: I have lower back disk herniation and my physiotherapist prescribed waterwalking in a pool as deep as my upper chest. Our apartment pool is as deep as my lower chest. She said I should bend my knees and do the water walking. I do it and I feel weird. What do u sugges
I was looking for exercises to help my mother improve her knee pain and improve gait after surgery. These exercises look like something she can do. Thank you and Ill let you know how it goes
I hope they help! Aquatic therapy is great after a surgery! Definitely let me know how it goes! If those get easy, I have several other aquatic videos: www.askdoctorjo.com/category/catagories/aquatic-therapy Good luck!
I live on the lake and there is a sandy swimming spot we go to regularly. I have often walked in thigh-high water but tonight, I was in knee high water and actually got on my hands and 'walked' with my hands, like crawling in the water, not using my legs - just upper body. I even went backwards, facing up and crawling with my hands. It felt like I was getting a good work out for my arms and shoulders. Do you have any advice for me on this?
I appreciate the advice on keeping your torso upright and straight, my aqua instructor should emphasize that a bit more, I am pretty flexible. I use to be on the swim team when i was young and water aerobics, water is my second nature to bad i can't turn into a mermaid LOL. thanks for the info and keep trucking doc,, Blessings for your day
You're welcome, and thanks!
Do you know of any flip book available for Aqua Eurobics? I can find diagrams all over but they are too small to read. I am a regular at the YMCA and the Coaches are trying to keep the pace up and I am missing the form and want to be able to work out at home when I can not get to the Y. I have asked the Y for the diagrams but have been met with resistance. I can not use the I Pad or a Video by the pool. Thx
Thanks for sharing the technique. Would it help with plantar fasciitis??
You're welcome. Yes, I think water walking is great for plantar fasciitis.
Thank you
You're welcome.
Dr. Jo I've noticed in a couple of your water vids you seem to have weights on your ankles? I've had a stroke (20 years ago) and it seems that these ankle weights would help me walk more correctly in the water? I'm in the pool everyday! Your vids help me SSOO much!! MANY thanks!
***** You're welcome! I do think some ankle weights might help with your stability. Mine are 1 1/2 pounds on each side. Good luck!
Thanks for this.
You're welcome.
What distance would you recommend when it came to someone first starting these exercises then a progression?
Hi i have plantar fasciitis in both feet i walk in the pool but my feet still hurt is there any thing i can do like wear compression socks thanks
Bravissima! Congrats!
Thanks!
Can these warm up exercises b done n the shallow pool @ my local gym?
Hi Dr Jo😃. What weight amounts for my ankle weights? I have 2.5kg each ankle.
Can these help lower back pain i have a heirnated disc and spinal stenosis it feels good to be in a pool but i dont want to do anything that will over do it
Dr Jo do you have a video for water exercise for a meniscus tear back of the knee?.I appeciate your input!Thank you !
The above should help. This one should also help: czcams.com/video/mVvzsFk6rPo/video.html Good luck!
Is these exercises good for hip & knee strengthinig??
Are these aquatic exercises ok for people getting ready for hip replacement?
Hi are these exercises for after fermer surgery
Thanks for the very informative videos :)...I am a little bit over weight and I can swim well but I am having troubles when trying to control my lower body when underwater (I can’t remain underwater without being pushed up to the surface, can’t keep my posture when walking in water and can’t sustain my verticality) should I be working on my core stability or what should I do for best results?
Thanks
You're welcome. Yes, core stability might help. Also, if you are willing to purchase water weights, that will help keep your lower body down as well.
Hi Dr Jo,
Is there a specific program that you recommend after arthroscopic hip cam-ectomy/labral repair/ microfracture? I've been going to the pool as much as possible and its really helping but all I've been doing is walking, squats, calf raises, and leg side raises. I'm going on 9 weeks post-op and walking a little bit without crutches or a cane now...just looking for a little more challenge! I will ask my PT clinic if they have anything else I can add as well...
tubeyourself I have several other aquatic videos if you want to check them out: www.askdoctorjo.com/category/catagories/aquatic-therapy You might do well with some deep water cardio exercises if there is a deep end at the pool. Good luck!
Hi Dr Jo, thanks for all that you do. Do you have a recommendation for water exercise shoes? thank you
You're welcome. It depends on what all you are doing in the pool, but I like them just to protect my feet and make it less slippery in the shallow end, so something simple and cheap should work fine.
You think walking in pool should be good for quad first grade injury?
I came here to ask about plantar fasciitis too. I also have osteoarthritis quite severely in feet & rest of body. I often have pain when bending toes plus weak ankles. Any suggestions for hydrotherapy exercises?
The above video would be a good place to start.
How do I choose ankle weights?
How do I know when I’ve done enough pool exercise for the day
Hi Jo... I have achilles tendonitis and was wondering whether you thought water walking would be helpful
I think it would be very helpful. Good luck!
Doctor Jo, my son recently got out of his cast after suffering a Salter Harris Fx. He is 12 years old. Can you offer any advise for strengthening exercises through aquatic therapy as well as regular strengthening?? Thanks for any help you can provide.
I have several aquatic videos that should help: www.askdoctorjo.com/category/catagories/aquatic-therapy These might help too, but you should check with his doctor first: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/osgood-schlatters-disease-syndrome-stretches-exercises Good luck!
Good day great work out.. Am a new subscriber. My question to u is can swimming help restore nerve damage? For like foot drop and others?
Thanks. It really just depends on how severe it is, and what exactly caused it. Often the feedback from the water and the pressure does help.
❤how many days a week should I walk pool
I'm having a lot of pain in my hips and Dr said pool exercises is the best. Is these walking exercises good for strengthening hips and knees. I have bone spurs in hips.
Angela Bennett Yes, these should help. I also have some standing exercises, and some more advanced ones if these become too easy: www.askdoctorjo.com/category/catagories/aquatic-therapy Good luck!
Good evening Dr
will my leg problem get relif
can i fold my leg and squat, walk, etc will there be improvement from acqu therapy....
It depends on what your leg problem is, but I don't know since I can't evaluate you. It's probably worth trying though.
I can barely walk, when I get on the treadmill I am at 1.5 on flat level 2.30 minutes I'm in so much pain. I want to give water aerobic a try.
I think it's definitely worth trying.
hello! do you have a printable so i can laminate to take with me to the pool please?
Unfortunately, I don't have something like that. Some people take screenshots to print out, so that might work.
Is it necessary to have ankle weights?
Very nice video
Do you have pool exercises for chondromqlacia that is caused by lateral deviation of patella due to weakness of VMO?
Thanks! I don't have a specific video for that, but I do have several aquatic videos if you want to check them out: www.askdoctorjo.com/category/categories/aquatic-therapy Good luck.
AskDoctorJo Dr No what feet of water should is best for aquatic exercise?
It really depends on how much support you need. Waist deep is about 50% gravity, chest deep is only about 20% gravity. So if you just want a little support, I would go about waist deep, but if you are having a lot of pain, I would go a little deeper. Good luck.
When I water walk, my left inner knee hurts. What am I doing wrong?
Great basic gait exercises but I have trouble keeping my left leg/foot aligned correctly when walking in the pool. It has been suggested that I wear a diving weight belt to help me keep my foot down was I swing it through? I would like to know more about the footwear and queried weights you appear to have on your legs? Can you please tell me what they are and where you were able to get them? Thanks
Water ankle weights often do a good job of stabilizing the feet in the water. The ones I am using in the video are by Sprint Aquatics, but Kiefer also makes good ones you can get through Amazon here: amzn.to/49yAJ7O (affiliate link). As far as the water shoes, they don't have to be anything fancy. They can range from the slip on sock type ones for ~$10 to ones that actually look like shoes, but have holes in the bottom for the water to drain out, which are more pricey ~$30-50.
Hello, is there a difference between marching while walking vs marching in place? Thanks
Yes, it does work the muscles differently.
Will the walking help With knee pain?
make one on therapy for avascular necrosis please
The exercises would be the same in the pool.
How can't swim, so what do you recommend? I have lower spinal lumber issues.
You don't have to be able to swim. As long as you are not afraid of the water, all of it is walking usually about waist deep. What specially is your diagnosis? I do have some regular videos.
Hi Dr. Jo,
Recently i've been suffering from sciatica and ive developed a foot drop in my walking, can you help me with some possible exercises to help with this? Love your videos, thanks!
+Adam Chugg Are you looking for aquatic exercises or exercises in general?
Aquatic exercises would be great, otherwise any other exercises which may be helpful?
+Adam Chugg These might help: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/standing-exercises-pool Some general core exercises might help as well: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/prevent-back-pain-core-exercises-quadruped Good luck!
I exercise for 1/2 hrs most days in pool. have very swollen soles. Could that be from running on the spot (always landing on sole not whole foot) Should I wear some kind of aquatic shoe?
+Ann Townsend I would recommend getting some. They have really nice ones that are basically running shoes except they have holes in the bottom for drainage, and are very light weight. If you are in the pool every day, I would definitely try some to protect your feet. I have a pair from RYKA that I really like. Good luck.
Do you always recommend wearing the water ankle weights? Do they help stabilize you and keep you from floating? I can't walk in the pool without floating all over the place. Am trying the Ryka water shoes next week.
I do unless you are too weak to use them. They do keep you more grounded and more stable, but they work your legs a little more too. Good luck!
I cannot find good water ankle weights. What brand do you use? Thanks.
I have had arthritis in my knees for years. I have been doing water aerobics for 4-5 mos now. I have more discomfort in my knees after I finish my routine, why is that?
Do you mean like soreness? That's pretty normal if you haven't been doing any other workouts.
Can water pressure hurt your back if you have bulging disc...After walking in the pool my back hurts so much more...why is that
No. It actually helps your back by taking away impact. It could be because you walked more than you have in awhile. Water is very deceiving because it usually doesn't hurt while you are doing it, so you end up doing too much the first few times. You might do better with deep water activities where you are getting some traction in your back while working out: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/deep-water-exercises-pool Good luck!
I got a surgery in my toe, I'm doing this kind of exercise at home, do you think it has better results if I do it in water?
Thank you for sharing this video
You're welcome. It really depends on what kind of surgery, and if you are cleared by your surgeon to get in the pool.
@@AskDoctorJo Hallux Rigidus surgery and my therapist allowed me get my foot into a container full warm water to move my toe
Which kind of shoes are you using?
They are Ryka water shoes.
Need help for someone using a walker to move around all the time
NAIMA MOHAMMED Help to get them stronger? If you have access to a pool, aquatic therapy can be very helpful. Good luck!
Have you wore ankle weight while doing these exercises
I have osteoporosis and a compression fracture at T11. MD wants me to water walk. 3x/ week or 5x/ week? 20 minutes or more? Thank you.
You're welcome.
Hi DoctorJo, is it ok if i walk in the water that higher than my chest? Must it be chest or waist deep?
You can, but it might be hard to walk normally in that deep of water.
Can I do water walk to help heal meniscus tear
Yes. Good luck.
Do you need to wear water shoes?
Cannon Ball was enough for me to subscribe. lol
:-) Thanks! I do what I can.
Hi there, I have hip bursitis and a meniscus tear in the opposite knee. Is there anything you're doing that I should not do? Thanks! I'm getting back in the water!
+Debra Powell These all should be okay, but if any hurt, I would definitely skip it. Good luck!
Thank you so much! Love your videos
+Debra Powell You're welcome, and thanks!
Do you need to have ankle weights? Thank you
No, they can be done without them.
I hv flat feet...my feet gets swelling if I walk too much or standing position will be more than 20 mins.n feet starts painting a lot even with normal walk..doctor has adviced me to take water walk... As it reduces weight also... Ur advice plz on reducing weight for flat feet people like me suffering from such kind of pain....
I would do what your doctor recommends. Good luck.
My wife needs water therapy for her arthritis all we have right now is a stock tank. That's 23 1/2 inches deep so lets say 20+ inches for the water... would that be deep enough for her until we can get a bigger pool
Unfortunately, probably not. She really needs to be standing with the water at least waist deep to get the best benefit from it.
what is your facebook name? It did not come up under askdocterjo? xx
Helen Holmes Try spacing it out. Ask Doctor Jo. Hopefully that will get you there! :-)
Can i do the exercises every day for a 45 minutes duration in Swimming pool?
Do you have an injury, or are you just looking to exercise?
AskDoctorJo Well one doctor told me that i have early Knees degenerative arthitis and my physiotherapist told i have severe tendonitis and advised for walking in the swimming pool for 3 months. I have pain in my knees, but need your advise
I wouldn't start out with 45 minutes because it is much harder than it feels in the water. I would start with 15-20 minutes, and work your way up to 45. Good luck.
Hey... I have a degenerative meniscus. Can I do these exercises? Will be starting with the basic walk.
They should be okay to do.
Are you wearing a special shoes? Not sure my pool rules allow footwear.
They are water shoes. You don't have to wear them, but if you are in a pool with a rough floor, they help protect your feet. Good luck.
Hey doctor Jo, I'm a 16 yeards old soccer player. 2 weeks ago I taked a hip labral surgury, my doctor said me that I have to do exercises in the swimming pool, what is the best to start with? And you think its possible for me to be squating whith heavy wheigh at 25's of juny? Theanks😊
The above video is a good place to start, but if you can, you should really be going to a physical therapist so they can help you progress. Good luck.
AskDoctorJo I'm already going to the phsycal therapist of the catalan football federation, but they said me that I have to do exercises in the swimming pool
Then they should be telling you what to do in the pool.
What are u wearing ? Are those weights? Or what is that footwear?
I am wearing water shoes, and I have weights around my ankles as well.
Is it necessary to wear shoes for water workouts?
No.
What's your take on Aqua Jogging with a belt in deep water?
I think it's a great non-weight bearing workout. I have a video for deep water exercises including aqua jogging. You can find all my videos on my channel: czcams.com/users/askdoctorjo, and you can use the search tool (the magnifying glass) under the banner on the right side to find specific videos/topics.
wud u recommend these for chondromalacia patella patients...? or any other aqautic excercises?
will these help d thigh or gluets muscle?
+rahima sahala Yes, I would recommend these, and they should help for both. I have many other aquatic videos that might help: www.askdoctorjo.com/category/categories/aquatic-therapy Good luck!
Thannkk you..
+rahima sahala You're welcome.
Would these be good for hip displasia recovery ?
+shooterbro2008 The low impact would probably be a great way to recover. Good luck.
+AskDoctorJo thank you I'm in physical therapy but he recommended to walk in the pool I'm on the path to almost walking again but still limp and turn trynna to get back to walking straight
+shooterbro2008 You're welcome! I hope it helps.
Are you using regular ankle weights or are those specifically for water ?
They are specifically for water. You can find them here: www.askdoctorjo.com/products
I didn't find them, and I went through all 7 pages, twice. :/
You can find them here: amzn.to/2q9E0bJ
Hello! Do you suggest any type of exercises for cervical herniated disc (c3-c4 my case)? Thanks in advance.
Do you mean for the pool or in general?
@@AskDoctorJo Yes, for the pool. I belive it will be better if I start off in pool and then I come back to the ground.
I don't have anything specific for cervical for the pool, but this one might help: czcams.com/video/Ek0EyulZrsc/video.html Even though it's titled for the core, when you use paddles/dumbbells in your hands, you are working your shoulder and neck muscles too.
@@AskDoctorJo Alright, thanks a lot.
You're welcome. Good luck.
I like the pool shoes
Thanks.
Hi, can you suggest any exercises for patients suffering from Ankylosing Spondilitis
Are you looking for specifically in the water or in general?
AskDoctorJo we have been recently told by doctors that hydro therapy would be helpful. So looking for some in water exercises.
All of these would be good: www.askdoctorjo.com/category/categories/aquatic-therapy Good luck!
Thank you so much 👍
You're welcome!
Can you tell us a little bit about what problems we might have if we have bad form? I've been doing laps but do lean forwards a lot just trying to get through them faster.
People often tend to lean forward when walking in the pool. In the pool, our center of gravity is slightly more forward (not much though), so our bodies tend to want to lean into the water. Try squeezing your shoulder blades back and together and push your hips forward when you walk, and see if that helps some.
Thankyou so much! Am I going to develop any problems if I've been doing it that way for a while?
You're welcome. I don't think so.
Is one supposed to wear shoes when walking in the pool?
Shoes don't have to be worn, but they can be helpful for many things including to decrease slipping and to protect feet from rubbing on the pool floor.
Have you got weights on ankles
Yes, but they are not necessary.
Wow! Dr. Jo, you can talk underwater too!
Pretty cool, right!!
are hands supposed to be inside the water while walking>?
Ideally yes, but it depends on your balance and what you are doing the exercises for.
@@AskDoctorJo doing for weight loss and for legs strengthening
Pushing your hands through the water will help with resistance.
Is it necessary to use shoes in water walking?? Can't we walk bare foot?
You don't have to use shoes, but it will be more slippery without them.
Thank you
You’re welcome.
Do you recommend wearing ankle weights?
It kind of depends on why you are doing aquatic therapy. Ankle weights give more resistance (depending on how heavy they are), and they actually help with balance and stability in the water.
@@AskDoctorJo Well, I need to lose weight, have arthritis in just about every joint and am currently trying to avoid knee replacement surgery. I had a hip replacement in 2020 but I'm sure aquatic therapy could benefit me all around.
It might be worth starting without them, and then progress to weights when ready.
why do we need to exercise in water ?
If you can't exercise on land because of pain or weakness or if you have a precaution and need less weight on your body, you can exercise in the water. The buoyancy of the water is very beneficial for that.
I am not sure if i am doing it right while walking because i am not seeing any improvement for the knees pain healing, If i am walking all time in the pool does i burn calories?
