  • In this workshop project, we tackle a common space-saving challenge by creating a DIY paint-drying rack from scratch! With tight project deadlines and limited materials, we'll guide you through the process step by step.
    📐 Designing:
Before cutting any materials, we explore our rack's design options, opting for efficiency and adaptability. Dovetail joints ensure stability.
    🔪 CNC Cutting:
Discover our workaround when faced with limited router bit options. Surprisingly, it works like a charm, providing clean edges for assembly.
    🛠️ Assembling:
Witness the assembly of our space-saving rack. Learn from our slight design hiccup and see how it still functions flawlessly.
    🎨 Using the Rack:
See the rack in action as we apply finishes to various components. It's a game-changer for workshop organization and efficiency.
    🔄 Redesigning:
As we reflect on the project, we share ideas for improvements. Thicker plywood, a sturdier frame, and added features for mobility are in the cards.

Any rrason you didn't use conduit tubing?
The tube minimizes how much the drying plywood contacts the rack, leading to better finishes.
Guess tou could also add large chamfers to the arms to do something similar too

You bring up a great point about using conduit tubing to minimize contact between the rack and the drying plywood, which can lead to better finishes.
In our case, we had to build the rack quickly, so we opted to utilize the materials available in our workshop.
Also, your suggestion to add chamfers is fantastic; we'll definitely consider incorporating that into our next projects for a similar effect.
Thanks again for your valuable input - it's much appreciated!

Cool, btw found that you might have misspelled your url in the "Get the CNC Files" section.
I really need to start testing making press-fit parts on my CNC.

Thank you for pointing it out! 👍🏻
The test fit parts are fairly simple to make - just have to have precisely calibrated router bits, or play with the tool path offsets.

Awesome. I have a question, how does the bit size affect the design of its cutting on the outside edge of the line? Does it only affect the corners or all other cuts too?

      That's a good question.
Imagine you have prepared your project's g code for a 3 mm (0.125 inch) bit and forgot to change the bit on your CNC before running the program and made all the cuts using a 6 mm (0.25 inch) bit.
The CNC would make all of the cuts as if you had a 3 mm bit in the collet. That would result in offset contour cuts and loose joints (the 6 mm (0.25-inch) bit would remove more material than intended in the g-code.)
We had the same issue - with a smaller difference in the tool diameter and a less tragic result.
