  • In the monastery of Citeaux, founded by the monk Robertus, the rule of Benedictus was again applied strictly and faithfully. Bernardus of Clairvaux (12th century) lived in this monastery and became so influential in his time that he was named 'the second founder of the order'. The new order, called Çistercians was a reaction to the lack of discipline in monastereies. In 1833 the abbey of Bornem, named after Bernardus, was founded in Flanders. The nuns of the convent of Kolen-Kerniel, who are completely self-supporting, live according to the Cistercian ideal.
