Let me put it this way:
    · In Germany, if the child is old enough (16+) it is considered a borderline family movie because it's a piece of cultural heritage, and so are all of the Werner movies. I remember the family including one pair of grandparents sitting together in the evening and watching it on TV. And yes after 8:15 PM they show things like that because luckily our freedom of press and speech includes swearing on TV.
    · In the US they would arrest the CEO of the channel for showing it and the writer fired without compensation and blacklisted, in the Southern States and Utah probably even lynched by "concerned parents", although they were the ones letting their children watch it unsupervised in the first place. 😅

Not only is he known for Kleines Arschloch or Käpt'n Blaubär, he also is the mind behind the Hitler-Parody "Ich hock in meinem Bonker" and wrote many books beside the known ones. He developed a whole Fantasy Universe around a fictional Continent called "Zamonien", on which so many different Beings and Creatures are living and he wrote as much as nine whole books around them - each of which brilliantly written and full of passion. The first of which tells the origin story of the childrens tv and comic figure Käpt'n Blaubär (Captain Bluebear) and there are different books playing in whole different places and from very different perspectives, all of which on the fantastic continent of Zamonia. All books are very recommended, although i dont know if all of them are translated.

"The little Asshole" is a comic book character created by Walter Moers. He has nothing to do with Werner, created by Brösel. His first appearance was in a comic book in 1986, the movie was released in 1997 with a FSK 12 (FSK is the _Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft,_ voluntary self-control of the movie industry - the equivalent of CARA/MPAA for movie age rating. The big difference is, that - for sales and cinemas, at least - the FSK ratings are legally binding. There are the follwoing ratings/age restrictions: Free for all audiences/without age restriction; FSK 6, FSK 12 - a movie with this rating can be seen in cinemas by kids over 6 when accompanied by a parent - FSK 16 and FSK 18). As you can see, Germany is quite lax in terms of curse words, sexuality and similar things, but restrictive in terms of violence (most notably, glorification of violence, which can even be a crime).
The character _The Little Asshole_ is literally exactly that: A politically incorrect sob, who is about 12 years old at the time of the movie. He sells his sister slip to a classmate, drugs hios neighbour's dog, drugs the punch at a school party leading to a mass orgy. The only person who likes him is his gandpa, known as _Old Fart_ (Alter Sack, it's the most accurate translation used in English).
There is even a 2006 sequelt (that has a FSK12 rating as well), titled _"The Litte Asshole and the Old Fart - Dying is Shit",_ but it was way worse recieved both critically and commercially. Probably mostly because it utilised the exact same form of humour, the exact same tropes and similar punch lines, that were simply out in 2006.
Ah, btw: Yes, this mocie can be freely broadcast on tv, as broadcasting restrictions are also influenced by FSK ratings. And those restrictions don't apply to anything under FSK16 (no broadcasting before 10pm).
As to the lews: I would imagine the word being used to underline the joke. iun German, it's _Luden,_ as opposed to _Juden,_ like the priest said: "Whith a 'J', not an 'L'!". _Lude_ is a sort of oldfashioned colloquial word for _pimp,_ hence the referece to the _Reeperbahn,_ a street in Hamburg and Germany's most famous red light district.

"Werner" ist from the author Rötger Werner Friedrich Wilhelm Feldmann alias Brösel (mostly just known the alias), who himself is in his first Werner movie "Beinhardt". It's said, that for his comics he was inspired by his own trainee time.
"The little a*hole* is from Walter Moers, who also is the author of" Käptn Blaubär" which books are scary stories for adults while this blue bear also received a children TV show in the 90s.

Absolutely love your reaction! "Kleines Arschloch" is about as reverent and politically correct as "Blazing Saddles", imo.
A brief note to the translation: "Evangelisch" is "Protestant"; "evangelical" is usually translated as "evangelikal". A "Lude" is a pimp, so the term "Lews" is possibly/probably derived from "lewd".
Thank you so much for sharing!

    • @Anson_AKB
      @Anson_AKB Před 7 měsíci +3

yes, as a protestant or being evangelic, i have to protest against us always being called evangelical/evangelicals. that part of the christian faith is more radical while protestant/evangelic is simply one of the two main branches of christianity in germany/europe that split off from catholics after Martin Luther several centuries ago and probably also changed a bit more over time. there are many more, but those two are THE widespread versions, in contrast to the usa where seemingly almost every church has some other variant and more diverse and radical groups are better known than "our" two main versions ... sorry, i have no idea what exactly "Lutherans" are (maybe more strictly adhering to the first version after the split?); there are just too many branches (often contradictory to each other) on the big christian tree which is itself only one in a forest of related trees (eg judaism, islam).
ps : Lude = pimp, and Lude just sounds similar to Jude. translations are always difficult, and even more so when trying to keep some jokes.
thus for the subtitles they tried to mimic that accoustic similarity by not traslating it as pimp and instead calling it "Lewds" (sounds similar to Jews)

In one part i‘m not with your opinion. Protestant isn‘t one of two main christians in Europe. Behind Poland (after Vatican the most catholics) you can go to east, Belarus or Russia. And you can go to the south, Serbia or Greece. There life a lot of orthodox.
But Germany, sure. North is more protestant, south is more catholic.

This 'little asshole' is not the main character created by Walter Moers, but one of the funniest and definitely the one using the most vulgar language. The stories are mainly published as comic books. He also wrote numerous fantasy books with nice illustrations about a universe in which books play a fundamental role. He describes all his fantasy creatures very poetically using what feels like an endless source of newly created words whose meaning are somehow easy to understand.Truly amazing word artist.

Evangelical isn't quite the right term - Protestant might be better? But I beg to mildly disagree (with the movie) on the "no wine for Catholics". AT least where I grew up, they stopped giving it to all because having everyone drink out of the same cup is kinda gross, but the priest and the main helpers still drink out of the same cup.

The "Werner" movies and the "kleines Arschloch" were only partially made by the same people. "Werner beinhart" was released in 1990 as the first of a series of movies, the sequals followed in 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2011. They were created mainly by the brothers Andi and Rötger Feldmann. "Das kleine Arschloch" is based on a comic book series by Walter Mörs and released in 1997 (the church szene is only a small section of the 82 minutes movie).
However the producer of the "Kleines Arschloch" movie, Hanno Huth, was also co-producer of the second "Werner" movie and Michael Schaack directed the "Kleines Arschloch" as well as the first and the fourth "Werner" movies. I guess, some of the crew also worked for both movies.

children might have liked it because of swearing, and adults often disliked it for the same reason.
common to both groups: they let some apparently obvious language determine their thoughts.
listening closely to WHAT was said in that language by slowly watching single scenes and also
by seeing this reaction shows what really might have been intended, and the great sarcasm and critique.

There's actually two movies about The Little Asshole (they're rated 12+ btw and have all the things that would usually make a movie R or even X rated in the US, just in animated comedy form)
The first one is about the little Asshole himself, showing what he's like, his usual activities that include tricking his band colleagues to play inappropriate songs in front of the wrong audience to get them beat up, absolutely terrorizing a dog through "reflex tests" and drug trips, casually sneaking his way into places he shouldn't be and pretending to work there simply to mess with people, serenading the old lady he has feelings for (causing her to have a heart attack), etc until he finally pulls his big plan at the end during the school event, where he drugs all the adults and rallies them to form a nude mob
The second movie, Das kleine Arschloch und der alte Sack (the little asshole and the old fart) focuses on the little Asshole's grandpa, who's an asshole in his own right and was already introduced in the first movie. In the second movie the grandpa dies and goes to hell and discovers that he actually quite loves it down there... until Satan (who looks like the little Asshole btw) kicks him out for being an atheist, claiming that he doesn't care WHAT anyone believes in, but he can't stand it when people think they're above believing altogether, so grandpa is forced to come back to life despite wanting to stay in hell. In the meantime, if I remember correctly, the little Asshole tries to figure out death and how to defeat it and potentially commit necromancy or something like that to get his grandpa back, using the dog from the previous movie as his unwilling assistant/test subject

Jew - Lew is an attempt on the German alliteration of Jude - Lude. "Lude" is a word (in Berlin cant from the 1900s) for "pimp", originally short for "Ludwig" = "Louis" - and the French forename "Louis" can also stand for "pimp" (as Puff-Louis = brothel Louis), allegedly by some reference to the French kings Louis XIV to Louis XVI.

Oh my Lord it has been Years. "Das kleine Arschloch" is such an amazing movie. Yeah it is hard to describe what it is, some kind of Art obviously. But it has been always really controversial. And I'm also quiet certain that in todays time this movie wouldnt be in Cinemas. And this movie was also PG-12 which is quiet insane :D

I am pretty sure somebody has already said that but I‘m not gonna sift through more than 1000 comments… „Lude“ (Lew-dah, phonetically described for anglophones) is a slang word for „pimp“. The A. says „die Luden von der Reeperbahn“ which is the red light district in Hamburg St. Pauli.
