.... The fact that this gentleman has done 19yrs in prison and doesn’t come off as bitter or jaded is almost a miracle ... It takes a lot to start over from where he came from... I hope he continues down this road, and is able to make his life whole, and make up the time he has lost

And I respect his decision to not share a lot of his prison experience and stories. I'm sure in 19 years with some of the most violent people in the world you will see a ton of un-wanted shit and to tell those stories is to re-live that trauma. At least that's what some friends of mine tell me when they tell stories of prison. I can only imagine. I still think face tattoos are a dumb ass idea and only a few people have been able to pull it off so other than that I'd have to say I kinda like this guy.

I'm 42. My dad left me when I was a toddler and my mom told him to stay away (drugs). I finally talked to him for the first time when I was 30 years old, and we started working on our relationship. He died a couple of years ago before I really got to catch up and know him, but I consider it an important and valuable part of my life. As Matt's son gets older, it WILL mean more to him to know who Matt is. I hope Matt stays consistent in his successes to beat his problems away. That effort is what turned the corner with my dad and myself. Congrats on the badass journey so far.
The charisma and authenticity of this man is next level. I'd like to see a follow up interview, but I would love even more to read the book.

I grew up in the SFV like Matt and can relate 100% to most of his story. It's so good to know I am not alone. Another story of crack and meth saving him from crack! This guy is about my age and from doing a lot of time like Matt in the Cali prison system. I'm surprised we never crossed paths before. The amazing story is that we are both clean today by the grace of God. I will have 12 years of sobriety this June. Great interview on all aspects of life!!

Don’t matter how tough you are, you’re the weakest person on the planet in that moment. Been there, done it. Out of it for over two years now. My heart goes out to anyone struggling with addiction. I wish I could hug you all and take your pain away.
Snap! 20 plus years completely abstinent from ALL of the chemicals including alcohol. A higher power saved my arse, whatever you want to call it 🐸🙏🏽🙏☮️🌈

I lived a similar life for 20 yrs… finally got fed up of lawyer fees, fights, ppl stealing, nobody to turn to when I needed help. I changed my way of thinking and my life turned around and I began molding into a stand up citizen… I’m not rich, but I’m happy, Im alive and I get to see my daughter blossom, that’s what makes me feel wealth and richness. I wanna see more interviews with Matt. He’s a great storyteller and keeps the conversation moving while being incredibly open. This was one of my favorite interviews on here so far.
He’s so right about back in the 90s. If you were a Southerner, the Eme wouldn’t allow members to use any drug other than weed. There was a high level of respect given to the community to always be on the “low” about activities. I hope he seeks professional guidance with approaching and understanding his eldest son. His sons age is also at the age where he’s rebelling and the past between them will undoubtedly be the huge obstacle to a healthy relationship. I hope they both work it out with boundaries and prove to each other through love and understanding on both ends. Great interview!

And to respond to the other comment, you’re right, we had to hide most of our addictions anything that was basically above drinking alcohol or beer or marijuana or a little lines of cocaine may be here and then we had to hide. We were not allowed to be open with Artukovich in front of children and kids on the street like it is today. It’s really hard for me to watch as it is for probably most of you.

This man, having seen the worst and come out the other side still able to live life and capable of decency and reason, is the best example of hope I can think of for those of us who also saw too much and did too little right...My favorite interview of Mr. Laita's so far this year...keep it up, man...there's a lot of us listening...and thank you.

I would judge the shit outta this guy if I saw him on the street not knowing who he is, and it makes me second guess my own inner being. This guy is true and about as real as life gets. Had life handed to him on a silver platter, made terrible decisions along the way but still came back full circle and is living his best life. Very inspiring dude.

This guy speaks the truth. You can’t make anyone quit drugs. They gotta want it for themselves. Truest words. It’s fun while it lasts but once it gets a hold of you it’s not fun anymore. I went through the same thing with drugs & alcohol. I looked at myself in the mirror & asked myself why? & just quit. Done. 13yrs clean & sober. Hard as fk to do but we’ll worth it. Thx for this interview. This guy is a good dude.

I hope one day Matt’s son will be willing to sit down with his dad and hear him out. He actually seems like a great guy and deserves another chance. Never too late to fix a relationship with a parent because once they’re gone they’re gone. I lost my dad at 15 and miss him every single day!

His son is under ZERO obligation to hear him out. You have ZERO idea what trauma he experienced because of his father's lifestyle.
He hasn't even been around most of his life, why would he care when he's gone?
I get so irritated when others use their own situation to tell others what they should and shouldn't do about their situation.
That's exactly what these guys want. They didn't want any of the responsibility and then at the end when they settle down they want everyone to forgive them. Good for his son not falling for that crap.

So take all that, and add that he didn't give us a dime in child support, wasn't there for my most formative years, was a terrible role model.
Now he's getting old and can't do those things anymore, I'm supposed to forgive him and give him what he wants after all that? And possibly be responsible for taking care of him in his old age?

My girlfriend's dad was in prison throughout her entire childhood and it took some serious tolls on her. Now he's out and she currently will not speak to him at all. After hearing everything she's said about what it was like growing up with a dad in and out of prison I don't blame her. However, he does continue to be a complete piece of shit to this day which does appear to be different from this guys story.

Keep in mind how people portray themselves on this show is only as honest & as self aware as they’re willing to admit and end of the day the kids are the victims of the parents behavior.
Whether he had no role in the kids life for decades or had a violent/nasty addict role in the kids life for many years, that leaves a scar & for some people it’s plenty good reason to not want to be close. If you watched your dad shoot meth and tear apart the home every day then go to prison and not once contact you like you’re nothing you probably would think twice when he shows up to be dad only when things are going well for him.
gives me hope to see a fully actualized man who can accept his kid’s rejection and hold himself accountable for the effect he had on him.
It’s one of the hardest things I deal with, but all I can do is accept and continue to try it a respectable distance, and I have to understand that it’s his decision at this point not mine. Thank you for being a part of this.🙏🏻🙏🏻💯💯
@@matthewcammarano5357 From what I’ve read on the topic what your going through with your son is fairly common. Granted there are some extenuating circumstances in your case, but don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s a two-way street. Take care.

@@Tepaneca unfortunately it’s not just what you see but what you experience and see your brothers and sisters in arms go through that messes us up. In prison you’re already not a free man. Military members sign up to serve their country and have people who become their best friends die next to them, there’s a big difference.

It’s not possible for the 23 year old son to have a relationship with him. I had a similar situation.
Situations like that can be wicked complicated. For all we know this guy was letting his friends diddle his son, or he abused him far more than he's letting on. Not saying I believe that he did, but everyone is the hero of their own story. Don't believe 1 sided stories so quickly.

The story of the VICTIMS and the suffering they endured are lost in the court transcripts of his trial and in the minds of his victims! You see all kinds of interviews of criminals who committed violent assaults yet their victims rarely get interviewed on the impact that assault has had on their life!

You’re right, there’s nothing I can do to change what I did it only comment I can offer to you is that I was involved in drugs in gangs, and the people that were involved in that we’re also involved in that lifestyle I regret what I did and I can honestly tell you I’m sorry for it and there’s no paying them back but at the same time the only justification is that they were involved in the same exact lifestyle as me so they were not innocent civilians, but every day I wish I never did
@matthewcammarano5357 - In all sincerity, I'm glad you turned your life around. What I was mainly referring to are victims who were/are not in the life. Those are the people who are forever traumatized. In the life & being a victim is karma. Again I'm glad you turned your life around and hope you're able to stay straight. I think it's great that you're getting happiness from helping other people. If you find yourself slipping, find a legal hobby and lose yourself in it (for me it's radio control aircraft and welding).

I met a dude named Mohawk Matt back in the late 90's in Fort Smith, Ar. I doubt it was the same guy but the one I met was a lot like this guy. I got 4 years clean and I am super proud of you, dude. I was raised in the San Fernando Valley and now live in Santa Clarita. Sadly I can say this guys story sounds way to familiar, a huge percentage of people that I grew up with went down his same path. Im glad this guy had a great turn around, not to many had this chance.

I was a teenager and tagger in LA in the 90s. Gangs were everywhere and the pressure to gangbang was strong. I got locked up in 94 and saw all the kids destined for YA or prison. I was able to turn it around, but there were so many of us that got caught up in that life and died or ruined everything. Matt's story is so relatable. It feels like someone I grew up with.

If you were in the LA Hollywood are the San Fernando Valley seen… Graffiti was pure, and it was innocent, but it lead to a lot of other problems eventually and I wish I could talk to myself and remind myself back into stick to the graffiti and not make the next step but then again, I wouldn’t be here sharing with you right now thank you for listening, and being a part of my journey brother.🙏🏻🙏🏻💯💯

Great interview here. I haven’t watched this channel in a while, then this popped up on my channel. It hit me at the right time in life. I’ve been going through some weird shit with my kids and this interview helped me realize that when life is tough, follow your heart, battle it out with yourself and make amends with yourself. Truly awesome to see this. Thanks.
He looks so much like my dad. My dad wasn't in a street gang but was in the army. We no longer have a relationship but watching this made me think about him. Last I heard, he had open heart surgery AND brain surgery due to his intravenous use of meth. Hope he's okay..

I forgave my dad for being an addict my whole childhood. He went to prison & wrote me an apology letter. I realized then he was going thru more pain I’d ever felt. I’m not him, I don’t know what it’s like to be him so who am I to judge. He passed away last year & when we spoke/saw each other, we told each other “I love you” He was still a pain in our butts but he was never a dull moment. Idk your history but if you can let it go, do it.

Matt your story truly touched my soul! Thank you Mark for letting people share their stories. For letting them be real. To be open. And to give them a small safety net for even just a minute. I believe you are opening so many people's eyes and hearts to help them better understand people who struggle harder then themselves. Or even just help people know they aren't alone in things they've gone through. My favorite saying is "I'm perfectly imperfect." Because everyone has gone through hard things. This guy is a fucking badass. I too have been through my own battles with addiction and have seen way more than I probably should have, and have done some things I regret. It takes a soldier to move on and change your life for the better. I wish you all the best brother, respect and love to you.

True badasses don’t get hooked on drugs and alcohol. They hit the world without mental crutches. They are the true badasses. They deserve more credit.
This guy grl… I feel sorry for your opinion there are many amazing Americans were never hooked on drugs and alcohol and you’re right they are true bad ass but what you’re saying you obviously haven’t been around much so I wish you the best and I hope you’ll have some different experiences because a lot of bad asses and really strong men and women have been hooked on drugs and alcohol. You’re just not in a position to understand it, which is your journey.

@Bryan Smith tbh there's more wannabes in lower yards in maximum is no hands policy which keeps you good just don't do drugs stay clean and you're good 👍 only be scared if you're a chomo or a snitch I mean there's riots and things like that and the knuckleheads put in work just be yourself you reap what you sow I did 10 years in level 4 not like most of the dudes that where in a level 4 prison but where in the 1 yard which is completely different
@The40Glock1 I've never been there just heard stories... I've only done medium and minimum time and people were getting killed at the max quite a bit more frequently. Also there was a takedown of a bunch of guards from the max who all got charged with sex assault against female guards. They were also holding prisoner fights in the cells for their entertainment, super toxic place...
