Well since he was killed on the street he’s considered a victim of crime, since it happened suddenly, family is almost never prepared for something like this.let the family know that the victims of crime can help with funeral and burial expenses . A family member of mine was also killed and victims of crime helped with about 8k . They are located in the rampart police department .

Hi Sergio, I'm currently a commissioned city cop... I've met many gang members in my 15 years of law enforcement and had both positive and negative experiences. Most of my interactions are positive as there's mutual respect given from both sides. That being said I want to encourage you by saying tomorrow is a new day brother. Your testimony was very inspiring and real. Much respect for putting yourself out there. Also, identity is a real thing... You mentioned your gang is all you got. While this may be true at the moment, new relationships await you if you're willing to get out of your comfort zone and work towards them. The biggest life lesson I've learned in my law enforcement career is to not identify as a cop. Go to church and build relationships outside of my gang. Many cops fall into the trap of "family" or "us versus them". We've all seen terrible examples of how that kind of mentality affects officers through bad conduct. I've proactively decided to serve my community without this mindset. All this being said, I am no more or less valuable than you no matter what mistakes we've both made in the past. The only thing that matters is what we do with tomorrow. Do we serve others... Or do we serve ourselves... I'm praying for you and your sobriety. Take care and God bless.

The best advice you could possibly give. Go to church and become family with people who are nothing like you but everything like each other because of Jesus. True family.
Listening to these interviews really makes me appreciate my parents. They are far from perfect but they always stuck by me and loved me. Even when i didnt believe they did. Im 32 now and im a productive hard working citizen. And i have more blessings than i can count. Thanks mom and pops for not letting the streets take me. That could have easily been me.

My folks were and are fucked up, but aren't genuinely bad people. It definitely fucks your path up though. I'm 27 and just getting my shit together and I know my life was remotely as bad as folks like this.

Them drugs n alcohol will have u like that feeling depressed as fuck. I was a heavy alcoholic and yea life gets depressing you feel you don't want to live anymore. There's alot of shame n different shit when ur using or drinking alot. The drugs n alcohol change ur mind up like that straight up. If he cleans up n stops using his brain will feel better and he'll get better with time. I've been clean now for about 4 months and I'm feeling more happy and life is just getting better now I hope he does the same.
I really liked this guys demeanor ; not glamorizing or making himself sound super tough. Just being real with it. I also have sympathy for him as well

I wish people with an alcohol addiction would refrain from having kids. I lived with one parent like that at home, and this unrealiable parent managed to simultaneously screw up us children and the whole family.
I am left with trust issues, people often scare me and my only goal is to live a decent life, supporting myself as best as I can, staying the hell off drugs and above all to never be what my parent was to anyone. I don’t want anybody to have to heal from
me.

He's still as vulnerable as a 13 year old boy now in an intelligent man's body and this made my eyes tear up. What he ran away from is what what his life became. You can see he has a beautiful soul in there and that he is smart and disciplined by the way he thinks before speaking and by the work he puts into his physique. My wish for you Sergio is peace and healing and that you have the help to do the work you need to be there for your baby throughout his life. Bless you

A guy I grew up with ended up doing 16 years on drug charges (yeah he was a big dealer but it's still fucking drugs) and the last time I talked to him, he was saying how fucked up it was to watch killers and child molesters come and go while he's still there for fucking drugs. It's a fucked up system.

He seems like a solid guy and my heart hurts for him as it does most people on here. Everyone is a person and everyone has a story. Be mindful to not prejudge. And don’t ever give up. Ever. I'm a recovering addict I was on heroin for 4 years I've been clean for 3 out feels great I food have to get on methadone but it has helped me so much not to relapse I had no choice I had a job I didn't want to loose it's possible to get clean I wish I could help those struggling I just pray everyone will snap out of it and want a better life God bless guys please be safe out there!!

This man is a thinker and knows how to communicate. If he got his life together he would be a great counselor for youth going down a similar path.
This man was involved in multiple stabbings over the course of his stay in prisons. He is not a thinker, someone who is a thinker does not repeatedly stab someone. Once? ok, but he says that he's done it several times.

I am 42 eyars old living in Russia. My Father left my mother when I was 1 year old She was 20 years old. I was growing up almost alone on the street (my mam past away because of cancer) I was in the jail some time, then I meet my wife and she change my life. I have two beautiful children and every day I said to the Gad THANK you for that. My family it is my life. I just want to tell to this man, try to find any possibilities to get good connections to your san it is very important. ( Sorry for my poor English)

I think it's because of his 16 years in prison. He must have spent so much time thinking. His mind automatically goes into thinking/day dreaming mode.
He is reliving those experiences by speaking about them, its ptsd. That is why he is pausing. It causes flashbacks you can feel.

You can tell he has not told his story very often.
This has to be one of my favorite interviews... Not only can you hear the sincerity in his voice but you can see it. I like when he would sit there and stare blankly reflecting on everything he's been through. He's done some bad but you have put yourself in his shoes if you were in that same position what you do? It's not really a choice. Sergio has lived more life than people twice even three times age and to hear how humble and appreciative he is to live on skid row has literally restored my faith in humanity. In my eyes... He's not criminal, a monster, or a 'bad person' he's real and that's just not something you come across or see too often in people anymore. Respect 💯
I really appreciate what you do and sharing this with the world. In a strange way this helps people. It would be interesting if you could do a 6 month follow-up to see how Sergio is doing.

There's a lot of politics, stabbing a member from another race means a race war where there are several casualties and its just bad for business on everyone's side. There should be some work for people who want to work. The government should have a highway corp or street crews like clean and improve places/blight and people can work there and get some money each week based on the hours they work.

I have been addicted to heroin for 18 years, I am 35 and have the exact same/ but own story as everyone else on these SWU episodes. Having parents that are alcoholic/drug addicts, being abused as children, not having the emotional support/love that is supposed to be given really sets the tone for the rest of the adult life. Feeling abandoned, isolated, and unwanted as a child and early teen causes an internal battle that can only medicated with 2 things and that is drugs and violence. In my personal experience every single person I have met on the street, in rehabs, psych wards, hospitals, jails and detoxes, it all traces back to that very simple question of "how was your childhood?"

@@Quandussy Those people haven't watched a loved one in addiction. Those same people fail to recognize our pharmaceutical companies, The FDA & trusted doctors created this epidemic. All the while knowing opioids were extremely addictive. Those of us not suffering trauma or a neurological imbalance should consider ourselves lucky. I've taken pain meds, I didn't become addicted. Addiction didn't run in my family nor had I experienced trauma. Unbeknownst to me alcoholism and addiction runs in my husband's family. His father committed suicide at an early age. My husband died in a car accident when our children were small. All three of our children struggled. At 28 I was a widow & single mother. I raised my children with love and stability. Unfortunately it wasn't enough. With a family history of addiction as well as experiencing trauma, the cards were stacked against them. as is the case with many who suffer with addiction.
He did a year after his attempted murder was downgraded to an assault w deadly weapon ??? Our “justice”system is broken

I hope Sergio finds his peace & happiness. I’m Mexican raised in Denver’s 5 Points and Jamaica Queens and lived in L.A. for a short while. I got to meet individuals just like him in my pursuit of self knowledge of my culture. I never judged young Brown, Black and Asian brothers I met living that life and I loved the conversations I would have with them when they heard me speak and realized I wasn’t from L.A. Had some good conversations and learned a lot from them as well. Most of them were kind to me. Thank You Boyle Heights for the education.

For a person who dropped out of school, he is very well-spoken. He seems like a smart guy. He would have made a good business owner (if he would have taken a different path in life) and his employees would have become his family. I think he would have gotten a lot of satisfaction being able to take care of, and help them.
In my experience, people that go through the system learn how to speak well and their vocabulary grows due to the legal jargon in court cases. Gotta adapt to understand what the system is saying about your future.
In prison.. politics include that you educate yourself, read, get your GED or HS diploma.

What I notice about these guys is that they all have very sharp memories. Such heart breaking stories... I wish I could help them all.
I used to be a CO back in the day and can honestly say guys locked up in the prison system that have done a lot of time or served time in the SHU do suffer from PTSD. Watching this guy talk I can see he has it by his mannerisms.When I first started the best advice I had was given to me by an older CO. He said "your not a judge and your not a prosecutor, your job is to enforce the rules and be fair and don't let your feelings cloud your judgment, if you can do that you won't have a problem". Best advice ever given and because of that other than a few knuckleheads I was pretty solid by inmate standards and actually got along with most of them. As for the name, I don't want any asshole CO's giving me static. Just speaking facts and walk the streets not having too look over my shoulder for being a prick like most CO's, Wardens, Lt's and even Asstant Wardens who dont even walk the yard. Most just sit their fat asses in their offices all day and collect a paycheck.
I know they've had a warden on here, but it'd be dope to get some CO stories/perspectives. My little brother is one and I can tell there is a lot of stuff on his mind and pent up aggression and frustration.

Thankfully the only time I've been to jail was for a house arrest violation. Thirty days was plenty. Almost all you do in jail is watch everyone else, especially when you're in a pod with sixty guys like I was. We had a CO in our pod at all times, each doing 12 hours shifts. We had our favorites and the ones we hated. It's a thankless job, being a CO. And more than half the COs I observed seemed like there was something always smoldering under their guarded demeanor. Don't know how anybody could do that job. But I notice you stated you "used to be one." You've probably got some stories to tell.

@@apeshitclothing Right, I worked in a prison for 9 years and what they don't tell you is, its almost like serving time, you're constantly checking your surroundings and feeling the temp of the room. It was so bad for a while, if I was in Walmart and someone what get loud on the intercom, I'd be ready to fight

There is much data to support the fact that children are greatly affected by not having their needs met, both physically and emotionally. And no, that doesn't simply mean being told that are loved. That's a simplistic view.
Most children who have their needs met will not seek out another family figure like a gang.
Also, big money doesn't look attractive to everyone. Often times, it's the culture of the environment which guides that sort of thinking. Maybe that's the type of area you grew up in, but it's not the norm.

Latinos tend to have some of the nicest prison ink. A lot of the time it's Inca and/or Aztec themed and is so intricate and looks so good you'd never think it was done in prison.

Yes, if a miracle was to happen and they both got clean, got jobs and got their shit together I'd love them to raise their child. But life is tough and if they don't really get their shit together and they still get to raise their child, the child has a good chance to follow right in his footsteps. I hope the very best for all of them and there are always 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances. He's done his time and he isn't stupid, so he has a chance to get his life straightened out. But that ain't easy, those drugs don't let go easily.

Man its crazy to see what has happened to Sergio. I met Sergio when we were going to Belmont HS. As a matter in fact we would walk home after school with other of our friends including Rudy ( he should know who I'm talking about). I had no idea that he was going through tough times back then emotionally let alone physically. Anyways if he reads this post stay strong my brother and don't give up on yourself. I know your a smart individual you just have to apply yourself in a positive way.

He could have not started using drugs in prison. He said so himself. He could have finished his sentence clean. He'd be better off. Where do you think he gets the money for drugs now?
Videos of people in his situation and similar have taught me to REALLY consider whether I want to be a parent or not, so that my shortcomings don't ruin another person's entire life.
If you choose yourself first over your kid, than ya, it’s hard putting what you child needs first, over and over and over again but the love and pride you feel for your kids is so big it’s a bit frightening. If something can make you do better it’s your love for your child. In fact, I don’t think people really feel real love until they have a child. Being a parent helps us care about the future of everything important on the planet too, so they can have a better life as well. If you only have shortcomings you’ll do great cause we all have some of those.
The fact that such a risk weighs so heavy on you is a good sign of your moral compass around kids. A lot of people just don’t give a shit

I got out of prison at 35. And through hard work I turned my life around and now spend my life raising my children and spreading the word of God. Gangster style. Of all the interviews i've watched on this channel, watching this guy is hard. I see him reflect on what he's said, after almost every sentence, and you can see his regret. He made me the saddest, for the choices he made, and for how life turned out for him. Just alot of regret

@@gts2550 In California prisons , when someone gets stabbed, they can't stop stabbing until being stopped by the guards. There's many many rules that the prisoners live by and if they don't follow, they will be the next victim
The last two minutes of his interview are so raw. You can see the reality of his current situation hitting him vs when he was going over his past.

It's one of those situations where yeah maybe it might get messed up bcuz addiction doesn't exactly let you go and say "hey ok yes go get your life together" but it feels like he can't even get a window to try. The weight of the rock and the hard place came through at full volume right there at the end when he spoke about being absent from his first child's life.
This man deserves a few blessings on his life , no matter his past. This definitely set a heavy mindset and perspective on my day today...

You don't have to feel sorry for anyone, and most of them don't want your pity anyway, but a little bit of empathy and a basic understanding of human nature would go a long way.
Most of these people either have no father figure at home or, as is the case here, a shitty male role model in the home. And like everybody else, they naturally seek the attention and approval of the dominant men in their lives. If the men in their lives are gang banging, then guess what they'll be doing.
It's a screwed up, dysfunctional, criminal extension of the family that we all seek, to varying degrees. If the politicians in our cities really cared (and they don't), then they'd be addressing the issues that lead to fatherless homes and low expectations.
Just a little empathy and understanding.
You can't run away from addiction, you need to run toward something better.
Is., it's just impossible for these folks to....not go back to the pen by themselves. They need help from another person. Look at how Scandinavia and Germany do it. They have tons to success getting people to be cool.

I think one of the more important parts of this interview is around 19:50 when he says "I wouldn't trade this for anything", then mentions that it's either Skid Row or prison. These are literally the only two things he knows, the only two places that have ever been a home to him. In reality, i'm sure he'd trade all of it for an hour in any one of our lives. True… he’s also making sure he don’t say nothing that will get him hit later. When you experience sht like that, you tuck it way back and make sure ya don’t think about it anymore.. so it takes time to recall it correctly.
So sad, I really hope he makes a new path for himself and catches a break. You can see he’s a good person who’s lost it. Why it’s important to be the best parent you can be and give your child all the love you’ve got.
