Alfred Hitchcock directs this special episode of a priest in a small run down church. Desperate for money Father Amian turns to a Horse gambler to pay off the debts of the church.
"The Horse Player" Dir. By Alfred Hitchcock
The Reverend Amian is the pastor of a small church. He gets a sizable contribution from a horse race gambler named Sheridan. Sheridan has apparently prayed to win and has been successful. He gives the priest a tip on a horse. The priest gives him $500 of the church's savings to bet on the horse. Amian's conscience gets to him, however, and prays for the horse to lose. It does. Sheridan arrives and tells the priest that he bet his money on the horse to win and it almost did, but suddenly quit. The gambler also says he didn't want to risk the church's money on a win, and instead bet on the horse to show. Since it did, the church won $2,100.

In some of the best and rarest of Hitchcock episodes, nobody is murdered, such as this one. The suspense is just the same, if not more so.

Bit of a typo in the title there, shouldn’t that be “Prays” for a losing horse, ‘Preys’ makes him a Hunter!
Seriously though, this was another well made and entertaining episode in the superb Hitchcock TV series. A moral tale and a dig at the hypocrisy of religious belief all in one.

I thought it might’ve been a play on words, though I’m not so sure how that would make sense. I guess it could kind of make sense if you thought of it like he was preying on an innocent gullible victim, which in the case of this episode would be the priest. Or maybe preying on the fact that he’s taking advantage of the “prayer racket” (as he put it) of literally PRAYING for the horse he bet on to win the race. I don’t know, maybe it was just a typo and I’m reaching here haha

Actually, the gambler was bound to end up broke at some point if he continued to place it all on sure things - his performance was at 77% (14 out of 18). But didn’t he have that nice new car? He probably paid cash for it so all is not lost.

I naturally noticed this, spelling mistakes are common online - by-the-way, in correct grammatical usage, some anti-Catholics might think of priests 'preying on' children (this situation has been exaggerated by the way), yes it’s "praying for" a miracle - and religion is not a racket, believers would say - a nice episode with a happy ending

Note that when Raines says "...our Church will survive without _race horses._ " it sounds a good deal more like "...without resources." Context was the only way I figured out what exactly the line was. Given that without racehorses the church would have had almost no resources, leads me to wonder if the ambiguous pronunciation was perhaps intentional on Claude Raines' (or the writer's) part. Okay, fine, so I'm nuts.

The irony is that the degenerate gambler is more virtuous than the priest. He could’ve easily claimed the priest’s winnings for himself, instead he’s a man of his word and even gives a small donation to the church with little money his has left.

Perhaps other commenters have already mentioned, but when a priest asks for a favor from the Lord, it is called PRAYING. When a priest preys, it usually involves an altar boy...

Such a deep teaching. What is a miracle? Are you on that island where God is sending you an airplane, or a ship, and since it is not according to your expectations of who, God is, or how God operates, you dismiss this. My first thought was, who is this Bishop, this representative of the Pope, and why isn't the Vatican willing to help with the roof for this church? It may be dangerous to demand the will of God with the idea that one has paid for it by being obedient in the way they perceive obedience.

the gambler is honest. He could have kept the priest's winning for himself, if he wasn't. The father prayed for the horse to lose knowing full well that the man had put all his money in it. Hmmm. So the man goes back to bust his ass in the hardware bussiness and father continues to fatten his own by sitting on it all day. Hmmm
