Color Matching with Oil Paint

- Color matching isn’t just difficult, it’s almost impossible sometimes, because color is always changing! Here I demonstrate a quick color match of vintage blue street tile using oil paint and a palette knife on Arches oil paper. This blue color is part of my “Colors of Ballard” print and printed tote bag. This is the process I went through to examine and approximate colors around the neighborhood. Doing this observation brought up many questions about why and how to match color for paintings.

I never thought about how color is not set. This really opened my eyes to seeing the shifting nature of color, based upon light, shadow, and whether something is clean or dirty. Super interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing!!

I also love what us artists get up to in the name of our art 😅 I love the thought of how much time you put in bending over this patch of street & polishing the tiles. Super dedication to the craft! ❤ Also reminded me of the time I stood in the street sawing off parts of chairs that had been left smashed up & abandoned. They eventually made great handles for a project I was doing, but I must have looked funny 😂 Yay, to getting out there & creating from the world around us!!
@@Earth_journey_yoga yes!! We humans just get so stuck in ruts . And then you see some body sitting on the sidewalk mixing paint And talking to... her phone? Herself? or sawing up chairs in the street.
I guess those odd-seeming behaviors themselves are kind of like performance art, breaking up the stagnation of socially constructed expectations. Thanks for pointing that out, the behind the scenes bit! I need two cameras, one to film what I'm doing, and one to film myself doing it! Completely different video! 😉

This is so interesting and fun to see. I like the way you think. Color matching feels stressful to me when I’m creating my own art, I just do what feels good. However this video felt very informative and was interesting to watch. My favorite phrase in almost every thing I do is “good enough” keeps me sane😂
I saw street tiles like this on my NOLA visit and it’s so cool to see PNW has an area like that too. I thought those tile street signs were so beautiful.

On the video the original blue tile looks like a teal colour to me. I just looked up about Ballard and the street name mosaics were created by the artist Benson Shaw. Could you just ask the artist what colour he used to save you all the work? 😂 I am tempted to go around my neighbourhood looking for colours that represent it but I don't think my findings will be as meticulous as yours. 😊
oh my gosh that's right, I forgot that an artist actually re-created some of these street tiles! I should track him down!
