  • I'm switching from this "Week 10 of Monetizing this Channel" titling to "Episode 10 of..." ??
Still searching for the verbiage. But it's about the business side of becoming a professional artist.
In this episode I talk about reverse engineering how you want to be treated as a customer so that you can decide how you want to act when selling your art. There are many different consumer styles and preferences, so it would make sense to use your own unique "love language" of human interaction as your guide to interact with people. After all, part of selling art involves creating real relationships with people! And we are trying to find our people.
This weekend I had a lovely experience during a sale that was "dead" (hardly any people were out). And yet I still made almost $1,000 treating people the way I love to be treated, while not even "trying" to sell!
BTW my current favorite iced tea (as mentioned in the video) is called "Safari Green" by Miro Tea. It is a green rooibos, meaning it doesn't really taste like rooibos. It almost tastes like fruit punch, even without sugar! So fresh and fruity! Here's a link to that tea. I buy it locally, but I think they ship as well. It is loose tea, BTW, not in bags. mirotea.com/pr...

I make jewelry among other things, but its what I primarily sell at craft fairs. One of my favorite things is having a dog bowl out front so we can see all the dogs. I also work on stuff during the show, so at the very worst, its a work day. I was a vendor at a brand new geek event that wasn't very busy, so sales were low. But because it wasn't very busy, I was able to connect with an artist I saw at a different convention, where it was too busy for a conversation. So I enjoyed geeking out with her for a good while, which was amazing.

Anne, I loved watching this!! Congrats on the great success at the Walking Art Fair, wowww!! I've never sold art anywhere except on my personal Facebook page. Haha! I'm somewhere in between you and your husband. I looove chatting with people at the grocery store, whether they work there or if it's simply someone in the bread aisle at the same time as me. 😂🍞 But the thought of selling at an art fair or market terrifies me a bit. I could go on about it, and I'll probably do a video about it at some point because... why not?! I love the special effort you took to make people feel special. Can I just say, the beginning of this video having tea under the trees was so good. It was like sitting with you here. I love your art and your neighborhood art set up was really cool and thoughtful. I love your no pressure approach and making it more about connection and people. Also the different price points is such a thoughtful idea. I love art, I love artist and I always want to support when I can and for me the money is a little bit of an issue especially not working. However when I see a bigger priced art piece I will talk with artist. I’ve asked for payment plans and once I made all the payments I get the art piece I had fallen in love with. Maybe not all artist will be willing but it has been how I have collected larger more meaningful pieces for my personal collection. When I have an artist piece in my home it’s like having a piece of the artist in my home and it reminds me to send good vibes to them.

I chat with people all over the store. It's nice to just start a conversation with people. My husband just wants to get out of the stores usually because he's Suuuuuper introverted and hates any form of peopling. I had a boss who told me all of my compliments were fake, but in all honesty I was sincerely complimenting people. My thing is that you can make at least one compliment of some sort to people, and you never know if that's going to save someone. Sometimes having conversations will help prevent bad things from happening. Sometimes that's all some people need to stay alive. That's why I do my best to make friends. I'm an ambivert and usually swing on the introvert side unless I have to go into the public and I act extroverted so that I feel comfortable.
I have a thing that I collect hobbies and I enjoy collecting the things for hobbies; I find it makes me able to really connect with other people on some level. When someone says they have nothing in common with me, it honestly stresses me out. It's like... I honestly love hobbies.
Thank you for the advice on the set up btw. It's nice to hear some ideas and thoughts on setting up a booth. I have a booth that I set up once a month at an art market where I live and it's honestly just useful to get tips. I'm trying to eventually sell more on my etsy and/or ko-fi since that's where I would probably get more traffic.
I want to be friends with you omg lol.
But to say which I am: I am an ambivert so I will talk to anyone or a I will not talk at all. It just varies on the day/moment/etc

One of the artists there is having a solo show in the building, and her fine art photography (and sculpture) is a symbolic exploration of being a woman and all that goes along with growing older and feeling invisible. When we go to the Sawdust Art Festival each year, we enjoy talking with the artists when they’re available. It’s always nice to be able to ask them questions about their art, what inspired them, and chat. 90% of the time, the artists reply by thanking us for taking the time to engage with them. They tell us that it can be really lonely when people just look and don’t engage when they are standing right there.

Some thoughts: Art sales can be challenging, but you have found a sweet spot. The goal of life isn't just to get to the end... end of a project, an event, a year... it's to enjoy the process. If you find joy in the process of your time, you are winning so much more in life than just dollars. Also, you are explaining experiential retail, which we in downtown development preach to retailers all over. Most don't want to do it because it takes time, people might not buy, etc... but when you are alone in your booth, you get to decide how you want it to be, and if serving the experience heightens the whole thing, do it. People want to feel something when they buy art.
I might suggest something for your husband's brand of buyer, too: Maybe a rack that says: Easy to buy art or something like that - that they can just look through without much interaction. I have found that not everyone is comfortable talking to the owner/artist in public spaces.
I might call your Sunday series:
"The Business of Art: Building a Successful Art Practice"
"Art as a Career: Turning Passion into Profit"
"Mastering the Art Market: Strategies for Success"
"From Canvas to Career: Navigating the Business Side of Art"
"Creative Entrepreneurship: Building a Thriving Art Career"
"The Artist's Guide to Business: Making a Living from Your Art"
"Art and Commerce: How to Succeed as a Professional Artist"
"Beyond the Easel: Monetizing Your Artistic Talent"
"The Art of Selling Art: A Guide to Financial Success"
"Crafting a Career in Art: Tips for Aspiring Artists"
"From Hobbyist to Professional: How to Build a Sustainable Art Career"
Mostly - just keep being you. I love your journey and how you are investigating all the options, refining your process, talking about the money (because people WANT TO KNOW), and being transparent. Will your channel be successful - yes. Just keep going.
Phew. That was a lot. But I hope you know that I am just so happy to have found you. Hugs from a friend from far away.

    • @annelivingstonart
      @annelivingstonart  Před měsícem

OMG so much great information and suggestions! Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of this with me! I need to look up experiential retail. I didn't even know that was a thing! Somebody recently told me that my marketing strategy was called "delight" and I need to look that up as well! I guess I like experiential delight as a customer!
And that's a great idea, having a no nonsense way to pick up pictures. For people like my beloved husband. We definitely need to always have some kind of basket of prints to flip through in a very low commitment way right at the front because going into tent is scary! We are so trained to be put off by sales people because it can be such a dehumanizing experience, being sold to.
I think I'm liking the art of selling art. I jokingly said the gentle art of selling art for this episode but maybe pared down to the Art of Selling Art would do the trick!
Thank you again, Jackie. Hugs to you too!!!❤
