I am LOVING all of your amazing comments! I want to know, how is your latest project going?
I started my sketching endeavor journey four days ago, and I've drawn 4 cool black vultures already! I need to work on my fundamentals before feeling confident enough to put paint and color. Feeling better already!
(Greetings from Colombia, btw)
I learn from ur work ( real l life , classical and modern art) ,
I am painting a fan art painting of Queen Amidala from The Phantom Menace. I'm using the method of drawing on the canvas directly and then spraying the canvas with a sealant and then paint over the drawing. This is something I learned from Cesar Santos.
🐄🐄 ❤
I have been working on a Thylacine in native landscape of Tasmania (which I've never been, so I get friends to supply reference photos!
"The pursuit of approval usually ends in disaster." Stunning painting.
Don't worry about the old masters, you sir are a new master!! Bravo
Andrew is one of the most amazing artists alive. I love his work!
A 100 percent! ❤
Exactly 💯
Totally agree
Truly inspiring. Cows are beautiful.
You’ve got me in tears dear man. You are a gift. Your gift is a gift. I appreciate that you recognize the “old masters” (whatever that truly means), but more moved by what you personally have within you to offer the world and in the way you view and experience it. Capturing that is really all that matters.
Absolutely stunning!
I realized after watching your video, that was one of my problems without realizing it. Just be you in painting.
I got emotional when you started painting those river stones and your painting took life right before our eyes. For me, from that moment on, you worked your magic and I will never forget this painting 😮❤
Thank you so much!
You had me in tears. I used to live in NZ when I was in my early teens and, sadly, have never been back. I became a painter when I was older and must say I really felt every brush mark you laid down. I would consider you a ‘New’ Master. Your journey. Love your painting and have subscribed.
This is one of your best paintings, it is so YOU! It is your style, your eye for beauty and appreciation of the subject, your exquisite use of color and light, etc... Andrew, YOU are a modern master, so many of us agree with that fact. I want to learn to paint in the painterly realistic way that you do, not the old masters. Every thing you produce is breathtaking. I feel so fortunate to have found you and so thankful that you are sharing your gift with us. You are a diamond! : )
Very well said!
You said the words I was thinking!
Such depth and life in this work, textural qualities so vivid one can almost feel the cow or the background grasses and trees! Lovely, brilliant. Beautiful cows.
I am reminded of my art teacher’s message to me: “detail adds interest!” For me, the best successes are when your vision can match your application. That is the ghost I’ve always chased. And there is, sometimes your vision does evolve within the composition. It is all about the journey. It can take you to new and exciting places. Another lesson from my teacher, “Paint what you see.” That in itself can be the hardest lesson.
Hey Tish, just me, Tree here... almost finished watching for the 1st time, this video, but at this moment HAVE to say so glad you can express the truth behind painting ((that artists (any creators) aught NOT TO THINK about the external)) . Hope you get a lot of "likes" and viewers responding about this. With that said, your painting is beautiful! 😊
Self discovery is such a strong and miraculous teacher. Thank you for us all.
A really valuable message thank you Andrew. My tiny studio is my happy place, and right now I am painting flowers in acrylics, in my own style. Revamping and finishing a painting I began 7 years ago. 9 years ago, my brother died - he was my painting buddy and a superb, visionary artist with flowers, both realism and abstract. I miss him sorely, and have learned much from his paintings, but I still have my own style. Your Video has come at a special time for me and helped hugely. Today is the 9th anniversary of my Mum's death as well (my brother died in December 9 yrs ago) My Mum was also an excellent water color artist and loved critiquing my work. Thank you for continuing to share your experience and thoughts with us. Note, that I also do seascapes and landscapes - photo realistic.
Longtime fan who can say Tischler is one of the best contemporary wildlife and landscape artists of the world, it's a privilege to watch his videos on here, I grew up in an era where you didn't share trade secrets like this unless you considered that person a good friend or worthwhile.
How beautiful you've captured cows, water, trees and the veld and the light on all of that. Thank you. Tess
I thank You, Andrew, every time I watch a video of Yours. You never fail to inspire. Your heart and mind combined is a beautiful painting itself.
You also inspired me to make a palette table on wheels, very similar to the one you have. Thank you for that.
I pray that you are in good health. This dark world needs your light. Get some rest - whenever you can.
Again, Thank You.
I counted 565,762 brush strokes🤕. "Just Paint" Wow, you are truly amazing Mr Tischler!
I like how you go to ultimate details. It's you. If you want to try to copy a master in their technique, it can open you up and make you learn and realize things, but your greatness comes from you.
Love from the southern US! Watching you is just addictive! Love the cows...we have a neighbour with 13 big ol' black ones that my dogs and I enjoy watching when we take our walk down the little path next to their pasture! ❤❤❤
This is an absolutley stunning painting. You are a master! What an inspiration to the est o us.
Thanks for sharing. I haven't painted in a while for that very reason...too focused on the end outcome. My paintings aren't selling and I got so discouraged. However, when I forget about all that and just pai t what I want to, I am so much more fulfilled. These cids always seem to pop up at the right time to let me hear what I need to hear. Thank you for that.
You are wonderful. There is only only one Monet or one Constable and there is only one Andrew. 😊wishing you all the best.
What an artist you are!!! I'm a Belgian and very proud of our own Emile Claus. You should see his fantastic work, and yours is equally mindblowing!!!
Thank you for sharing Andrew. As a retired engineer, many of the suggestions apply to my field and have helped me grow as a artist.
With some who dabble in art, its about the outcome, because the mindset has become a race to the finish. When we see a near completed painting, and we sense an immaculate work of art, the anxious artists oft at times kicks in.
What a lovely subject! You are a master and just don't know it. I'm sure that everyone who is fortunate enough to see your work realizes just how talented you are. Thank you so much for sharing your process with us- you inspire people to draw/paint. I could look at this painting for hours.
Hi Andrew. I am en Plein air artist for many years. I always enjoy watching your videos. I learned this same lesson many years ago. I just relay the lesson to my students in a different way. I tell them if you always try to paint a masterpiece, you will never paint one. I also tell them that I am a plein air artist, because of two reasons. One is I love to be in the great outdoors. The other reason is I love to paint. If I get a great painting it is a bonus! If you think this way you will always keep growing as an artist, and maybe paint your masterpiece.
Thank you for your thoughts and narration. As an artist I have experienced the same sense of being lost and ready to throw in the towel and start something new. I came to the same realisation as you some years ago. I learned to push through the doubts and find the flow in my own paintings. I look forward to seeing more of your paintings in future - Paul 😃😃
I’m a younger person who likes art as a hobby, but I’ve not really touched the paintbrush for quite a while since I was frustrated. You sharing your experience was amazing. Thank you for giving me hope and inspiration!
Right when you said, "Stop thinking about the end result and just paint." I was standing back staring at the glass pitcher I was trying to paint in agony, because I couldn't make it look right. Then I stopped and just started painting again. Finally it's coming together.
Dude, you're a modern day master. This painting is stunning. I love cows, and Herefords are one of my favorites.
You inspire me to want to use oils. But it’s never worked for me. I gravitate to and use watercolors. But you do provide inspiration.
NO I can not do oils either...
So I turn to acrylics which are just as vibrant in brilliance of color... plus the advantage of fast drying time.
I would simple HATE to have to WAIT for just 1 step of painting to dry BEFORE I'm able to move on... heck I would lose that insight of the very next step that needs to be done immediately!! 😢🤔🙄
Yes Andrew, cows are cool! 😃🐮 Just continue to be you, this painting is sublime. Thank you for the reminder to be immersed in the process. This is something that currently rings so true to me.
Andrew, all the way through art school in the 90s, the instructers hounded me over being too tight, being too representational, and even painting, which they said was a dead art form. When came across you, I immediately thought, that is how I dream to paint, and I am getting better every day, but I can just be the artist I am, but growing all the time. Each of the brush strokes you make. Are we learning experience for me. I'm fighting with a painting now, what you have said has been a great reminder. Thanks
This was a special video for me. I get down on myself for being a slow, meticulous painter. Try as I might, I can’t paint loose. I do give up when I feel I have overworked it. I also grew up with Herefords and spent many lazy summer days under the trees with them. They are gentle and beautiful, and worthy of painting. I loved watching these come to life.
I love that painting! I grew up on a farm in Florida, and it just takes me home. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I go back and forth with the same dilemma, but I always need to go back inside and paint from within in order to paint at all. I'm so happy to hear you say this, I don't feel it's so much a dilemma anymore.
Oh my Gosh!!!!!!!!!You have nailed this painting !!!!!!!!!! Dear God your work is Gorgeous !!!! Thank you for sharing ... been with you along time.
Andrew... I haven't watched you paint for quite awhile now...
I see here that you have faithfully grown with your insights for painting.
These cows are a beautiful master piece!! 😊
It's true that "practice makes perfect"!! 😊
Do you know what I think this proves is that just like your signature you have a style that comes from inside you. And you will always revert to it. Even when you practice other people styles, which helps you to be more open minded, you return to your own unique perspective. In your case you love detail. And it’s incredible and lifelike. Those little brushes and those find find details make your paintings incredible. I’ve recently seen several artists attempting to change their styles. And it’s too pushed and forced. I think it’s something that has to happen slowly overtime. Something that you don’t even realize you’re doing. When you commit to be different it’s not necessarily genuine. Keep doing what you’re doing. Of course you know you’re incredible. I guess even enormously successful artist have their moments of doubt. So take my suggestions with a grain of salt because they’re coming from a not so successful or famous artist.
This painting turned out really great - especially after your changes. The play of light and shadow makes it beautiful. In my opinion you achieve this mostly with the details like single blades of grass while the old masters you are referring to might be doing this on a bigger scale.
Of course I love appreciation from friends for my paintings. So I post it on Facebook. I do it almost daily.your painting is so natural that you inspire me. . While painting in acrylic , I am so absorbed that time passes by.😅I enjoy the process. I have a huge collection and I gift to others. I am 74
I felt freedom, peace and beauty in your wonderful work. thanks yes the work is written in 2 hours + 20 years of practice
The "Great Masters" lived many years ago. If you had lived in their era, you would have been one of them. It's a beautiful painting, full stop! 🥰 Love your work!
To quote a couple of great lines from the film and play Hobson's Choice - "But he's the old master!" "And you are the new!" Great to see an artist gaining from the old, but being the new. Gorgeous result.
ibeleve thousands and thousands of peaople learned alot from you , your tips and your painting secrets are amazing ! You have no idea how im get mad when i see your new video on my notifications 😁
Hi Andrew! You've given me a renewed appreciation for cows. I got my fisrt Kodak camera when I was 13 in 1964 and the first pictures I took were close-ups of cows and their beautiful eyelashes. Black and white film to start with. Your painting of the cows really brought back memories! Tischler wouldn't be Tischler without your remarkable style! Thanks so much for explaining your thoughts!
Another magnificent painting.I’ve been promoting your paintings in a new art group I’ve joined. One of the ladies is going to love this. She’s currently painting a Hereford.
Not only is A.T. the most amazing modern artist alive but we can ALL agree his humility and willing to teach is GOLD. This video proves art is about the soul not just degrees and others' opinions. Thanks for explaining the external & internal aspects. This encouraged me keep pushing on my current project. Ps. Flow state can take forever to get into but MAGIC when you do. Thanks A.T.
Thank you so much Andrew for this video. Your message spoke volumes to me and got me unstuck. Your comment about painting "what you know" and "what is around you" hit me right between the eyes. I so appreciate you sharing your wisdom accumulated through the years. That painting by the way is fantastic! It does make me see simple cows as something extraordinary.
Great Mate, some good valuable lessons in respect to process and being true to yourself. A hard lesson for visual art students with limited time at school. Too many unfortunately give up and walk away from the process when they need to persevere. Take care, let me know when you might come for a visit to Perth, always good to see you.
Spot on Andrew . Lovely painting, Lovely video. Thank you. Cows are fantastic creatures .
I was talking to an Artist at his Exhibition, and asked him if had he seen some work of some well know artists. He replied that he didn't know much about any other artists because he was too busy painting his own work. His painting were beautiful. However, on reflection I realised by what he said that I was spending too much time watching and reading other artists work and techniques and not enough time working and developing my own. Studying other people's work is good, but being in ore of others art can intimidate and restrict you in a negative way. I myself have decided not to worry or get bogged down by being "Not good enough" and about what others think, but instead get out and paint what pleases me .
I think maybe this is a what you was getting at, and you are right.
I do however love your paintings and comments. Please don't ever stop.
Such wonderful insights!! And I so needed to hear them! What else I learned from watching you and listening was that you kept going, sometimes back to something I'm sure you thought you were done with, and tweaked it, made it better, changed it completely. And the little grass details, the water sparkles, the cow's hair....it really doesn't matter how long it takes, right? It's the process, getting lost in it! THANK YOU!
Thanks Andrew I am going through same process right now and have wanted to give up on a painting commission and I do need to go back and paint like me!
I love cows! They are never boring! Great advice and inspiration as always- thanks Andrew.
This is why you are my favourite artist Andrew. This video says it all. It has changed my mindset. Thank you.
The way you paint makes me cry. I wish i had a smidgeon of your brilliance.
Thank you so much. I've never commented on your videos I've seen, and enjoyed.....but this touched a nerve in me.
I don't think I've ever been taught such a vital lesson on what we go through as artists, and the manner, through this amazing painting process, of self discovery 💞. Again, thank you so very much Andrew
You listed some inspirations for this peice and I was reminded of Peder Mørk Mønsted, a landscape painter that I believe you might know of, which is very inspiring.
I do not know why, by this painting inspires a hunger within me. It is beautiful, but most importantly it is alive; it makes me desire to see these cows and streams in person.
Gosh! Your words are as beautiful as the painting! Your "ah ha" moment to paint "like you" was amazing! I am a very brand new artist (although I am not a brand new human 😂, not even close). I just completed my very first oil painting, and ugh the struggle with wet sand at night has me a bit frustrated. I just love your attention to detail. It is inspiring, educational, and encourages me as an artist to appreciate all the nuances in the things we see!
A true masterpiece again. Being simply in here and now with painting is the key to success.
From USA, big salute, and the appreciation for your wonderful Art work !!
I'm also happy you didn't give up! I truly appreciate your transparency and not being afraid to share your thought processes. I have experienced similar challenges, and now I have a technique for pushing through... Focus on the process! My sincere gratitude, Andrew!
Andrew, you never cease to amaze, challenge and inspire me to " just paint ". I paint with acrylics, someday I may try oil.
Recently, I ran from a painting and hid from it for three days! I was getting up the grit to start from scratch…but when I returned…it was fine! Just that awkward stage and my up tight self criticism, I thought. But, during this inspirational video from you, I recognized some of the same self talk and comparisons that were truly the root issues.
My goal is to become a professional painter, and when I sell my first one, you’re on my list to send some specie as tangible gratitude for the many solid tips and saved videos from you.
Warm thanks in the meantime!
J
loved the narration. I was so happy when you put the rocks under the water..... this was gorgeous to watch, thank you.
I grew up across the road from my grandparents' farm, and I just can't imagine being able to capture those cows the way you have here. My grandparents and the cows are gone now, but we still have the farm. I'm going to think about your painting the next time I'm there. Thank you.
Haven't painted anything since war started, and now looking at this amazing cows, I really want to start paint again.
Thank you for the inspiration and for reminder that process is really important.
Fantastic call on the water. The clear spring has so much more pop than the muddy water
Beautifully painted, you've caught the natural beings Herefords are. Gorgeous 😊
It's comforting to know that even a painter of your caliber wants to 'run away' from your painting sometimes...
Just gorgeous ! You never cease to amaze me. Each painting a master work. The entire composition along with the details and the mix of colors are breathtaking. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and process. You are the best! I wish you the best today and ever.
Isn't what made the old masters great the fact that they painted like themselves? They painted how they saw things in their own way. You have to be true to yourself because you see things a little differently than everyone else and that's what makes one's work interesting and authentic. You can get inspiration of color choice and technique, etc, from others, but you can only authentically portray how YOU see things.
As a professionnal illustrator that truth has always been my mantra, especially talking to new artists and young people.
Art isn't about your "gift", "talent" or end result (although as a professionnal illustrator the end result does matters a lot for the client) but to me it's about love.
It's a simple truth but it's very strong to me, i do art because i just love it that much, i love it to the point i can spend 10 hours a day 5 days a week and still feel the burn of the process affecting me in positive ways.
Being there, going through the moment, it's so valuable, especially if you're like me "someone who's always not there, dreaming about something".
Art and painting keeps me here at least for a few hours, it's not always that easy but it's a thing i'm grateful for because it makes my moments on this earth so much more precious.
Keep up painting Andrew, your work is inspiring and your technique admirable, your words too are sources of inspiration.
THANK YOU SO MUCH YOUNG MASTER. MUCH LOVE AND LIGHT TO YOU AND FAMILY. 😇
Love your work . Thank you for sharing
I bought a few of your dvds. I love your work and this resonates well in Texas. Cows are sweet creatures. I love the pops of light and small details that make it your work!
I like how you captured the cow , before completing her step, to stop to look in your direction when you snapped the photo. Glad you worked through /or came back to the painting to forfeit trying to capture old masters, but what you LIKE, the what draws you to have decided to paint the painting in the first place,. That teaches a lot. That you changed you one cow a bit. And you added the light needed.. that probably was there, but within camera speed, ops missed it .The tree and wind shifted obstructing the possible light. I am 75, and been picking up art again, one I was able to gain enough materials that were taken. Shoestring budget, so I have to be frugal. I paint link Owen Gromme who taught me when younger, Robert Bateman gave me some pointers too, before he really became well known. And I know that this type of art is NOT ACCEPTED by art Critics as "REAL ART. " But perhaps in future will be.
It ends up being something to celebrate in fact. Beautiful !
I like that you do not mind showing that you had one idea and changed it to another idea.
It is the process it changes with each insight along the way...
Your art has always inspired me..thanks....be well..💖
Simply gorgeous! It reminds me of Constable: the light, the rural subject.
Beautiful.🎨
I dont paint only draw, but after watching the video and taking up all your information i will put a brush to a canvas and et it go,no worries about other people say,i will be me and only me,thank you Andrew and let God bless
I loved this post. As great as it is being you, it took trying to be someone else to recognize and appreciate who you are. Since we are born, imitation has been a part of the process of learning who we want to be. I still try to copy some of my favorite paintings just so that I can learn what I like about them and if creating them is as much fun as looking at them. I crash and burn on some and have a happy ending on others but I wouldn’t take back the time I spent on any of them because there were as much to learn from the failures as there was from successes.
Keep inspiring artists with these great posts.
I'm doing now 115cm x 75cm wildlife landscape, and it's quite of a challenge. It's the biggest painting I was ever doing. 3 days in process and still doing grisaille underpainting. I'm not as experienced as You, but always wanted to make such big painting, also with every single painting I'm trying to find some challenge to become better in this what I'm doing. I only hope, someday I'll be as good as You are. Painting so far is doing good but, as we all (painters) have some struggles.
Good job I love your style of painting and how some of your videos were inspirational to me.
Greetings from Poland!
So glad you posted this. The painting is gorgeous! I am currently “fighting” with a painting of horses. This inspires me to stick with it and and just enjoy the process with no preconceived expectations of the outcome. Thanks Andrew! Just the “kick in the pants” I needed.
Wonderful. I can feel the water and smell the grass.
❤Success leaves clues AT! You are this Century's Master - Thank you for Teaching x
Amazing painting and superb technique...I never loved a 1/2 hr video more ..so joyful scenary !
You are an AMAZING artist and teacher! Thank you for your thoughts on this topic. These new groups and classes on the internet are all about "THEIR" way, products which I understand they should push those. But they are not teaching what painting is all about like you just stated. When I first started painting I could get lost for hours in whatever I was painting. Still do! However I always want to learn New techniques, and LOVE watching you paint. I learn from watching you paint. Your style and techniques mesmerize me !! Thank you so much for doing what you do!!
Thank you, your painting actually brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me of a simpler time on our ranch in North Dakota. It is beautiful I would gladly display this in my home if I could afford it!
Don’t you ever try to be someone else. You are amazing!
❤❤💛💛💙💙 Big Thank You Andrew ,
hugs and kisses from Romania !
I really got into painting seriously back in the 90s. I started watching Bob Ross and other TV artist. These people had 23 min. to complete a painting; therefore they painted very quickly. No muss no fuss just use a bigger brush! I developed into a speed painter not realizing that I was missing the point of creating a painting from the heart. Watching you paint made me realize that by slowing down (even with acrylics) and paying attention to detail could make for a much better painting; taking my work to the next level. THANK YOU!!!🥰🤩
I am so grateful that I am living here now, in this present moment in space/ time to see the great painter Andrew Tischler. The Old masters may not consider them self masters in their living time. That is the mark of a master. Watching you painting, all your studies and your afford is so inspiring. Master or no master, who cares. It is just name convention of humanity. The point is if this makes you a better human been. That is the key. Thank you will never be enough.
I can't imagine wanting to paint like anyone else when you have your talent Tish.
And you're right....no matter who we study and for how long...we'll always paint like us. Thank you. 🙏
