  • SERGEI RACHMANINOFF Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor
    Andrea Obiso, violin
    Oliver Herbert, cello
    Wei Luo, piano
Performed on Tuesday, March 5, 2019
Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia
Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was only twelve years old when he was admitted into Moscow Conservatory. When he graduated, he had already established himself as a significant composer, pianist, and conductor. He launched this multifaceted musical career as a concert pianist, dazzling crowds with the large span of his hands.
Rachmaninoff wrote his Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor in 1892-his final year at the conservatory-over the course of just a few days. He and some colleagues premiered the work soon after, but it was not published until 1947, well after the composer’s death. The trio is in a single movement, but is filled with the haunting lyricism and melancholic beauty that would remain the hallmarks of Rachmaninoff’s music throughout his life.

This is a terrific arrangement. I was determined to learn this and I started about 5 years ago when I got a small grand piano. A year later I came across a good deal on a very nice 9 foot concert grand. I decided this would be my treat as I slowly retire. I found the orchestra arrangement and learned all but a couple of the more difficult arpeggios towards the end. I recently discovered Lotus Flower playing this very arrangement on CZcams and I immediately began working on this because it has the piano playing all the melody lines usually played by woodwinds and strings which is so lovely. It's almost enough to lift me out of my depression.
I wanted to advise you,, as a serious affecionado of Rachmaninoff over many years this is a fine performance. I did however find the tuning of your piano awful. Please have a good technican carefully do a tune for you and repost another performance. This music deserves a good instrument with proper tuning.
Please forgive me if I may have offended!

Exquisite. I wasn't worried about the pianist at all - at Curtis, even their worst pianist (for lack of a better word) is still world-class! So, no issues there. The cellist, literally, outstanding. The violinist was a power house as well, but he really needs to stop moving around so much. I have seen the Curtis Symphony Orchestra in person and you might get dizzy if you watch the string section, particularly the 1st and 2nd violins. Some of the string players are moving so much you would think they were about to fall out of their chairs. It's borderline ridiculous. It's an orgy of movement. They really need to clamp down on that. So, the violinist is good enough to draw wonderful tones without all the gymnastics on stage. Ha!
