France consistently poor, with very negative tactics, but tend to have just enough talent to get them over the line, in spite of thier coach. The difference between them and England is that they have won things in living memory, meaning that unlike England they don't have a nation of fans filled with dread and anxiety resulting in frustration bubbling to the surface at the slightest sign of perceived failure.

I’ve noticed this about English sport (and I say this as an Englishman). While it’s at its worst in Rugby Union, English fans - generally - completely overlook the qualities of ‘lesser’ teams. Most of these lesser teams, that are doing well, are full of top players that play in Germany, France, Spain etcetera. We English fans seem to think we have some sort of divine right. If we win, just, we’ve played badly. If we lose, we’ve played terribly. It might just be that we’re underestimating the opposition.

@@32446 True, you do have some of the best players and since they excel in the PL you might expect them to be top notch. But that doesn't mean that you therefore can ignore whats happening in the Spanish, Italian, French or German leagues. They have top players too. I am not bashing England since I've been following British football (Scotland included being an Aberdeen fan as a young boy and N.I. having Gerry Armstrong and Norman Whiteside posters in my room) since the 80s and I really would love to see them do great, but I see this happen at every tournament i followed since 1982. Yes, they did reach the final, but I was quite amazed that Mr. Southgate wasn't sacked after that game. Playing at Wembley and managing only one shot on target (which happen to go in) and only having 39% possesion? If that happened in NL (i'm Dutch) the coach would have been sacked

England have done really well getting to the Euro finals let alone the last 16 of it. "Pride goeth before a fall" and that has plagued the England side and England fans alike for decades. Pride could be the thorn in their side. Perhaps Southgate and his players are approaching these finals with a tactical sobriety based on that incite/hindsight that the fans(lost in their proud delirium and unreasonable expectations) are just too myopically minded to grasp, that might explain the disconnect leading to the "unusual environment". By all means let the team go forward with the courage of a lion but leave "pride" out, it might be the key to avoid a fall this time around. Perhaps the best tactic for both the team and fans alike is to be humble before being humbled, again.

Don’t want be the party clasher here but it felt to me like England being matched up against teams they thought they surely would be winning against and subsequently went into as clear favorites was the problem. The worse the opponent, the more they struggled. So I honestly believe falling onto the „easy“ side of the draw was not necessarily a good thing for a team like England. Facing Germany, Spain or France, the big hitters, it feels to me like they would’ve gone into it with a very different mentality and hunger.
We’ll have to see if they can mobilize that motivation against teams like Austria and Switzerland which are seemingly worse than them but can really hurt you if you don’t know what you’re doing.
