    47 years old and got a Trek Domane LT+ 3 years ago to get back into cycling after back surgery some 20 years ago. Got me up the Dolomites last september but sold it and bought a Wilier Gran Turismo slr endurance bike and enjoying getting in better shape then ever before. So for me it worked fine, starting off with an e-roadbike.

    I think it should have been mentioned that the SILCA wax after the first degrease/strip you still get like 70 uses of the wax still. That is huge.. Here is there statement I saw on a post
    "Just a quick point of clarification! 500gm of wax can handle 6 factory chains and 6 strip chip pieces (one whole package of StripChip). In total, one bag of wax and one StripChip pack will be good for 70-80 total waxings including the 6 strippings. We've seen no degradation in performance at any of these ratios of StripChip to base wax, but also know that there has to be a tipping point. "
    Game Changer!!

    • @pierrex3226
      @pierrex3226 Před 3 měsíci

      Why do you think it's black to start with? Because wax gets dirty / contaminated. It's like fucking in the dark, you're hiding something. Also, wax is cheap AF. I've been waxing my chains for years, remove the dirty chain, pour boiling water to clean it (occasionally do that on the cassette too), dunk it in melted wax, shaky shaky, no more bubbles coming up, boom, done. When the wax gets nasty, use fresh wax.

    • @urouroniwa
      @urouroniwa Před 3 měsíci

      Of course, that's how much you *normally* use the wax. I feel like Silca is maybe dropping the ball a bit on their packet/advertising when they don't make it clear how long the wax lasts. $40 US (or however much it is) is a lot of money for 500 grams of wax. Most people are going to wonder how long it's going to last. If you rewax every 200 km, that means you'll get upwards of 16,000 km on a bag of wax in good conditions. It makes the cost/performance a little bit easier to reason about -- spend $40 in order to save $x on new chains, etc.
      I think part of the problem, though, is that 80 applications will work out to 50 cents per application and I think some people will feel that the price is a bit steep.

    I gotta start saving my comments for the end lol.
    The real kickass thing for me about road/gravel e-bikes is when I'm going out hard on a training ride or climbs in the mountains, friends of mine who love cycling, or my parents in their 60s, can go out on a decently hard ride with me and they can keep up with me on those rides. It gives people who couldn't really cycle together the chance to cycle together. That for me is the "real road biking" application for e-bikes.

    The thing I appreciate about ebikes is that I can convince my girlfriend to come out for occasional rides with me instead of having a weekend day where she doesn't get to see me until the afternoon!

  • @scottpardy990
    @scottpardy990 Před 3 měsíci +9

    Ebikes are great. My father (~60-ish) started with one a couple years ago, and cycling (with an ebike) really stuck. He's seen and measured improvements to fitness.
    We've gone on several great rides together, including one of my favorite rides in the past few years, a hard 2 hour gravel ride that both of us absolutely wiped at the end of it.
    Basically, it opens up a whole category of rides and adventures that he wouldn't be able to do otherwise, and it's an equalizer so we can both get a great training ride in together.
    I can guarantee there's a nice e-gravel bike in my future so I can continue riding with my children and I'd love to get my wife on some sort of ebike so we could share the same story of experience.

      The only thing I’d say is that 60 isn’t old and it’s not so old that you need to switch to an e-bike. I’m approaching that age next year and still out there smashing myself regularly on my road bike, racing a bit, brisk club rides etc as well as commuting to work by bike. But I 100% agree that if an e-bike can get someone into an active lifestyle and places they normally would not go, then e-bikes are a saviour for those people. And they may still ride a non ebike as well at times. And there is a an exercise, lifestyle and community health benefit when someone rides an e-bike to work rather than sit on a bus or in a car.

    If the Boardmam has good components put them on the sl7 and then build the boardman back up cheap as a winter bike. Plus the sl7 will hold its speed better.

      I've decided the slam the boardman frame as much as possible and not waste the 1000£ extra for the new frame for just better speed, think I'm happy with the outcome and 32mm front and back is better suited to cycling in UK (Edinburgh) I have a Grizl SLX gravel bike for winter riding so no point in another winter bike.

  • @BikesKomsCRO
    @BikesKomsCRO Před 3 měsíci +13

    @chris /@jesse I'm the guy with the Boardman SLR Question: to add more background - it's a 2019 Boardman SLR 9.2 with upgraded Lun Road Wheels 60mm, tubeless 32mm gp5000 str. The front end is Easton Ec70 Carbon bars and bontrager carbon stem (rival axs with PM) . I'm a recreational rider, thinking of getting into some events but not racing I like riding fast (300km weekly)(33km/h avgs on hilly terrain). 95kg and 195cm -(big lad) . I have a Canyon Grizl SLX for winter riding already so don't need a winter bike. I did slam the stem yesterday on the boardman and feel a little lower down. Still thinking of upgrading, roads here are awful (Edinburgh).
    Maybe the bike might feel twitchier and quicker, and stiffer but will that result in noticeable speed over 100km rides you think? (£1000 for 1km/h faster)??! 😅 (SL7 Specialized Tarmac if it wasn't clear)
    How long is a piece of string

    • @kpizzle1985
      @kpizzle1985 Před 3 měsíci +2

      I had the SLR, I built up a frameset, it's a very underrated bike! It's not as light as they say though, mine in a medium was about 950 grams in matt black, with the heavy seatpost I don't think it'd be lighter than an SL7. I had mine for about a year before it got warrantied but was sad to see it go. I had it slammed with a 120mm stem, it looked great and it felt very racy, it didn't feel like an endurance bike. I bought a Strada Due frameset after that, a frameset that rates very well and there was little performance difference. Over a short distance being absolutely hammered the Strada has a slight edge but for general riding there's little difference. I've never ridden an SL7 but know of people who have ridden the Strada and SL7 and they've said the Strada is the better bike.

One recommendation from a product discussion, sometimes you guys launch into longer discussions about a product or a bike but you only provide a brief snippet photo and then go back to talking heads in screen. If the product is worth talking about for an extended period then show it on screen for longer than 2 seconds. My rant for the day 😊. Best cycling show in the net

    I'm your exception to the rule of ebikers who've gone the other way. Heart disease in my 40's (genetic for the judgy types) meant analog was holding me back from keeping up with the weekend group ride. Post heart bypass I still have the ebike for the 1000+ metre days but I now also have a MTB and Road bike for solo rides or slower group rides. I think alot of people assume everyone has their ebike on boost all time. I use it to recover between efforts as opposed to. Strava is a whole another issue. Flagging a ride as ebike removes a lot of the useful functionality. I have mine set to friends only so it doesn't submit to leaderboards.

    For the black inc wheels...if you look at some manufacurers in China (OEMs builder ie. farsports and LightBicycle and so on) they have been producing some similar weight/spec wheels for quite some time. Not a surprise a bigger name brand (who use similar factories in China or TW anyway) finally do this, in fact it could be the same of just slightly customized order from those OEMs anyway.

    cycling is fun. It is a different experience for each of us. I personally enjoy doing something much harder than I expected. I do have a good bit of trepidation and sometimes I simply do not do the ride that I thought I could do. Suffering sucks. But it is oddly satisfying when you have crossed the finish line. I won't do E-Bike until I'm too old to ride a real bike. But it is nice to see more people out enjoying cycling and the outdoors in general.

      Honestly, I would recommend buying a new chain (or two) and a cassette too - then use the wax + chipstrip on the new chain (or Silca's excellent chain stripper). I took out my jockey wheels and was shocked at how many times I degreased my chainrings (the internal surface of the large chainring was filthy); that was much better process than my first bike where I tried to keep the old chain/cassette - the time and effort and result was sub-par.
      The other thing I love is having multiple chains, makes everything very easy...and once you have one bike converted to wax you'll end up wanting to do your whole fleet! (it's that good)

    The show triggers me every week haha. Being from Melbourne but living in California some of the Aus pricing for some of this stuff is mind blowing. Sportsbasment for instance (kinda like a rebel) will often sell most stuff 30% off, will stock cannondale, bmc, Scott bikes etc…
    Can’t help but think the sram transmission setups will also hit road groups by the end of this year which maybe why all the current group set prices are dropping? The giro Aries (spherical mips) might also be a good product to look at. Also, if rides are logged as e-bikes on a garmin this gets flag in strava as an ebike (have their own KOMS etc). The speed here is capped at 20mph for e-bikes, and a lot of people use them for training and recovery mtb-ing or for long travel bikes that don’t really pedal up hills very well. Anyway! Such a good show

    Hey guys, love your show and watch it every week! My thoughts on the e-bike thing........consider that there are people that ride and race regular bikes and also ride e-bikes! Your conversation made it seem like you had to chose one or the other.......i live in Southern California and some of the fastest XC racers around here ride them(national champs too), i have a Levo and a Cannondale Topstone e-gravel bike, along with 7 regular bikes, and sometimes a bunch of us meet up and ride the MTB's. A bunch of these fast guys do the MTB races sometimes just for fun and i can tell you that anybody that thinks racing an ebike is cheating in any way is out of their mind!!!! Go do one and then tell me how easy it was, you ride it absolutely just as hard as your XC bike, you just go faster, period!!! I also ride the Cannondale sometimes if i want to explore some BWR segments or something new that's kinda far from the house. People that ride them, however, should ALWAYS list their ride on Strava as an ebike ride, which my bikes do when you pair the motor with your head unit, and then it gives you net power also while riding. Love the conversations, info and the frothing!!!

    Great episode as always!
    About powermeters, I'd argue that they can be a good investment and save money in the long run. I lost interest in buying speed since getting power meters on my bikes. I rarely race, so I'm mostly interested in how much power I can produce on segments of varying lengths and on different type of terrain. I could buy new wheels, but why? To go faster without getting better?

I ended up replacing the strap believe it or not they were in stock. I ended up ditching them once the carbon sole completely separated from the rest of the shoe about 50k later

    So on the e-bike issue, I'll share my old-school perspective and say it all counts, two-wheeled fun is fun in different ways on different two-wheelers. Back in the day, we had no problem switching between the two, bicycles and motorcycles, and the history of cycling in the States is largely rooted in that if you consider off-road pursuits like BMX first and mountain bikes second and what we were all doing, why pretending we were on dirt bikes, of course. And these days, I would be happy to own a 125 or 250 for some motocross therapy and I just might, yet bicycles will always be my first choice for fun and fitness and the challenge of it all. And the only e-machine I have is a 26' mountain bike converted with a Green Zone Bikes 250w front-hub, thumb-throttle, Samsung-battery kit. And it is a kick for errands and commuting, just a boost as I still have to pedal. And I call it my silent mini-bike and O my, when I was a kid, I wanted a mini-bike so badly. A go-kart, too. But that didn't happen so I had to make my Sting-Ray fly and I'm glad I did, it was a blast and who knew I'd become so fit in the process. Bikes are sneaky like that, tho' I suspect e-bikes are, too, for the sport or competitive or adventurous type, better than not being out there and missing out on the great wide open.

    Congratulations on landing Silca as sponsored, i live in USA, big fan of Silca brand, their tools, bags and chain lubs are pretty hard to beat . Josh is a master in marketing and sales, he does it himself better than anyone and can make farmers buy cucumbers with his presentations . The stripping chip is a clever solution but only one time when the chain is new, once you go waxed there is hardly any benefit , i believe taking the time to strip the grease off a new chain , wax and repeat is a better practice.

    Degreasing a chain really isn't that much of a faff. I use white spirit in a jar with a lid, shake. Refresh the white spirit and repeat. Then finish with a clean jar of panel wipe to get it perfectly clean. Takes ten mins at the most, and you don't contaminate your wax. A lot cheaper too.

    On Boardman vs SL7 and talking about stack, you're talking about the importance of aerodynamics of the rider in a more aggressive position, right? I dont think it's that obvious to most. I recently bought a new frame that is suuuuper comfortable (and super stiff) and allows me to push big watts vs my giant propel, for eg (which arguably is too big for me, but i'm a rocket on that thing). But i'm way slower on the new bike while doing more watts. As far as i can tell, the holy grail is finding the inflexion of the curve where extra aerodynamics start to reduce my power production. Which is what a (good / ideal) bike fit might do? Whether you're racing or not, free speed is just more fun. But we also want to get fitter so i'd rather push more watts than being faster but unable to use my legs to their full power.
    Was this the point being made about the lower stack?

    My thinking for silca's product is you're turning the grease into a wax by combining molecules. To me this turns your wax into a different lubricant than just pure wax. I feel you'd still want to wash out this strip chip to get the best wax in the chain. Honestly this didn't change the game but trying to solve a problem by making a problem.

    Power (to overcome aero drag) has a linear relation to CdA. So a difference of 0.005 on 0.065cda means you'll need 7.7% less power (0.005/0.065) to overcome the aero drag at the same speed.
    In total, adding rolling resistance, your body's drag and other losses, this will obviously become a much smaller gain.

    Silca state that there are specific temperatures that need to be adhered to. Not sure why you are taking 2 days to degrease a chain. Use petrol to degrease. Get an old plastic bottle half fill with petrol, chain in lid on shake for a few mins. If you use turps you aren't degreasing your chain, you're stripping the factory grease and leaving the oil from the turps behind. You could use methylated spirits but petrol is cheaper. petrol and metho will evaporate after degreasing

    E-bikes are almost 100% of the time adding inclusivity to the sport. Road e bikes are still incredibly niche, but I have seen them sold almost entirely to folks who are slowing down (for age, health, etc) and want to still complete the rides that make them happy. Almost never is someone just buying any e-bike (much less a road e-bike) purchased to shortcut the fitness aspect.

    From my experience you're wrong about E road bikes. Quickly, Im a 61 yr old male been racing/riding for over 20 years. Ride with mates, all age group winners in Nats, States, UCI fondos etc... My wife coudn't keep up on a 30kph av rec ride.. ever. 7 years ago she got an ebike, has been super keen to ride the once or twice a week since and keeps up and can be included in my cycling life and our friends. Data from here HR monitor shows her work zones are nearly identical to mine on any given ride. There are always the nay sayers ( arh you dont have to work hard..arh just turn up the boost, ah your cheating...) not only has it kept her fit and interested in cycling, it's kept me at a high level of involvement . Ebike ( the way ive set it up) allows her to do 120k rides, on or off rd ( sorry Jesse some gravel) with a group at "our pace" . In my circumstance, and many i have seen locally ( Bathurst NSW) there are only positives to be had from either new riders or ones past the half way point of their cycling journey getting an ebike. Why would anyone say they are bad ? Consider looking outside Heffron, doing Cats Ears laps and La Pa chop offs... keep up the banter.

    I think you’re missing the point on e-bikes, it’s hard for a for long term cyclist to really get it but just think of it as the more people on bikes the better. I ride emtb, my daily is a e-cargo but I still ride a normal aero road bike. The fact that an ebike will give someone the confidence to get out on a bike is fantastic, also one of my friends got a ebike to just get around on and within six months he was hooked and now he spends his weekend blasting around on his Trek Domane SL.
    Oh I’m in my mid 40’s and a fitness instructor so my e-cargo is a great way of getting around without constantly smelling of sweat 😂

    The VCAdventures video is outstanding. As for e-bikes, they're a way for older people and people physically challenged to experience a bit of the joy of cycling. They have no real relation to real cycling other than being on two wheels - a cross between motorcycles and bicycles. I'm fairly old, 71, and so far, haven't felt that I needed an e-bike. I like feeling my heart beat accelerate while pedaling my bicycles.
