- It has been *way* too long since we played the "King of Grand Strategy" -- so we're back with Croatia, a country that was added in patch 1.30 (Emperor) and is in a tricky position: a junior member of a Personal Union with Hungary, and with the looming threat of the Ottomans.

New to the channel? I do Let's Play videos -- these are like walkthrough guides of gameplay with continuous English commentary trying to explain my decisions and what strategy I use. If you're looking for hacks or cheats, you're in the wrong place! - Hry
It has been nearly a year since the end of our last EU4 campaign (Savory Savoy), which is just...wrong. Hopefully I haven't forgotten too many basics!
P.S. Take a drink whenever I confuse Bohemia & Bavaria as well as Bosnia & Serbia during this series.
You have the option to switch to dalmatian culture. Then you can form dalmatia. Whatever you decide, keep goin! I like your vids :)
Quill, have a look at the achievement "Krabater". Maybe you can find out if it still works, starting as croatia.
Thanks for coming back to EU4 love this game.
I have not played the game in sometime and love you're tutorials. Is there a chance you can do a full tutorial of the most updated version of the game?
Hey, Quill, do you mind making a playlist for this series? Thanks!
You're playing my country :) Welcome, your Majesty!
I'm sure everything will be just fine...
Let's hope I don't mess it up!
@@quill18 Oh, come on, Quill. What could possibly go wrong? :p
My dyslexia made me read "welcome to our misery" and I honestly didn't bat an eye at that. #balkangang
@@TBM_PRODUCTIONS #dyslexiagang
Playing as Croatia can be hard as hell every one is basically looking at you licking their lips lol
Guess I'll have to punch 'em in the mouth first.
Balkan in general is a hellfire. It looks like a fine area with easy expansion potential, but in reality you are squeezed in between great powers that all want to expand in your direction
Fun fact: watching Quill18 was how I was introduced to EU4 and I've currently got about 3600 hours of playtime
This would be the part where I joke about how Quill has reminded me to play another Paradox game, but its playing EU4 that leads to me forgetting the other ones
Me, too. This is such a great game! On the other hand, the Old World Blues mod has actually got me playing HOI4. :)
As a Croat this is the dream♥️
Except for the pronounciations. Kot slovenec, feelam vas.
Thank you for starting this run, I am from Rijeka so go Croatia go :)
rajdžika
As a Croat, I like this :)
love how they put zagreb on the completely wrong side of a river and not on the hill where it was at this point in time
Eu4 is what got me into quill's videosway back. Glad your back to this awesome game!
Quill is who got me into eu4 lol
@@Supergforce777 me too
Trade is the best way to make moneys in eu4, production income comes later, and if you set up your trade well will still be second to your trade. taxes arent going to do much all game
Taxes are nice early, but yeah otherwise they quickly drop off in importance.
It gives me chills cause the last video i watched from him were the first videos i watched of eu4... And now here i am telling him what to do in my mind with 4k hours of gameplay... You made me playbthis amazing game master 🤗
Heck yes! More EU4 from Quill :)
Agreed! Any chance of seeing some EU4 from yourself?
Great to see EU4 back! Might encourage me to give it yet another go.
Ahhh seeing this reminds me of, like 7 years ago now jeez, when you, arumba, northernlion, and Mathas used to do multiplayer games of this. :)
So glad to see you playing eu4 again! Just some tips for you since your new to leviathan. Estates: keep it over 20 crown land and take the monarch points every time you can, take the loyalty for the estates and the adviser costs and loyalty from all. Development: admin dev is generally not great you only want to dev it when you have nothing else to spend admin on, diplo and mil dev are really strong even if it’s on a bad trade good since diplo dev increases production value and trade value in the trade node that it’s in making you more money long term and short term. Favors: I would strongly recommend that you curry favors to 100 with both Poland and Lithuania and maybe Bohemia too because at 100 favors you can place a member of your dynasty as their heir making it VERY easy to get strong PU’s! Anyway hope this helps and can’t wait to see you play more!
It always feels right to see Quill play EU4
I started watching quill back on EU3 on a Spain campaign. Seeing another let’s play has me pumped!
I mean knowing the meta is good for tight spots but we're also playing games in our spare time, keeping that in mind people should absolutely just be playing how they have fun or what feels right or just however they want for whatever reason.
I'm just now realizing I've been watching this channel on and off for over a decade, jeez.
been watching the Korea and Savoy playthroughs to help me learn the game through my first few playalongs lately so this is a great surprise! ty quill :)
I've been on a Stellaris binge lately and just returned to EU4, such a beautifully rich and deep game. I'm really psyched we're both getting back into it at the same time!
Finally eu4 again!
Since i live in Za-Grab, i gotta see this one :-D, and knowing Croatian history just a little bit, i am very much interested to see this mess unfolding :-D.
"All countries start with little funds." Laughs in Dutch.
Excited for this series!!
Hell yeah another EU4 series
Oh glad to see someone makes a playthriugh with my country.Good luck quill
You should hurt up with the independence war before hungry falls under pu under Austria because there's a high chance they annex Croatia then. But on the other chance if they don't annex you you can ally hungry when they become disloyal and break away from Austria.
So excited for more EU4!
The start was quite bad. Hungary gets an event a few months into the game where they can choose between two options: either start a 0/0/0 regency council with Ladislaus as an heir (that most likely leads into a PU with Austria unless Ladislaus somehow dies before turning 15) or to elect 4/5/5 Janos Hunyadi as a ruler (which might make Hungary decline the Austrian union later and actually gives you some decent monarch points early on).
Although with the support from the Turks you can beat Austria+Hungary quite handily, you'd rather have Austria friendly towards you so that you can gun to join the HRE.
I can't wait for your next EU4 campaign, especially since another big DLC just dropped! The game has changed so much since Leviathan
excited you're playing this again!
I don't think I've ever watched one of your EU4 playthroughs. Looking forward to this one especially since you are saying it is the best Paradox grand strategy game.
Croatian sounds so much like Quilation. (Quill eighteen ian). Love your work dude!
Woo back to the classics :D
Yes!!! EU4 is back. Thank you!
I have waited for this moment for years now!! Thank you quill!! A tip for pronouncing; read J as Y :)
Sad to see no visual mods, but EU4 gameplay is EU4 gameplay. Keep up the good work, quill!
I would wait for the high income mission, when you get manufacturies it's way more worth. In my opinion you don't really get anything out of it early on
A fun little bug lets you start off by issuing two of the +1 points things to the estates, increase one province by 1 dev, then issue the third before selling titles. You end up gaining crownland from the sale of land, then you can get more by seizing land. It's a surprisingly good combo.
exploiting bugs is lame.
Huge like. Finaly my country.
I gotta love a fellow lover of the admin points. All hail
Awsome stuff!
Oh no, I'm kind of tired of EU4 but as a Croat I'm contractually obligated to watch and like this (p.s. If you ever go back to Football manager I'd like to recommend you Croatia as well... for no reason other then... well I'm croatian.)
13 minute unpause, unpause on episode 1. this is gonna be spicy
You fuckt up your estates 🤣
Hi Quill, In the Estates tab the loyalty -5 click you were looking affects loyalty equilibrium. If you hover over the loyalty of each estate the current equilibrium is shown you should try to keep this number above 50 so that you will be able to seize crown land when loyalty reached 50 from each estate.
Glad to see EU4 back, Croatia will be a very interesting challange. With Leviation I think it would be good to see your next game in North america as the new Tribal mechanics make that area interesting to play now
What's new?
I played the Iroquois in my first ever game of EUIV, back in 2014. The tribal stuff was _very_ different back then, and I'd only seen European countries played on CZcams. I was _so_ confused. Heh, heh.
But it was fun. And when they changed the tribal mechanics, I played another tribe. (I can't remember which one.) That just really interests me. I haven't paid any attention to the latest DLC, because I've got so many _other_ games to play. But,... who knows? :)
@@Bill_Garthright One of the main differences is with migratory tribes who can wander round the map eating up an area and then moving on (until they become "civilized"). Tribal development for these tribes moves with the tribe until they settle down. Tribal development is an automatic growth (dependent on choices made) each month and doesn't require expenditure of command points. This video czcams.com/video/OabpVDt2eCQ/video.html expains more and covers other changes
@@martynhill3479
OK, thanks. I'll check out that video when I have time.
Quill grass lands don’t have penalties to dev while defensive terrains do. Hopefully you can make a ring of forts in defensive territory further out from your capital
Whoa, some Eu4? Count me in!
@quill18 cilli has an intresting history! You should get it out, the duke of Cilli was responsable for and Austria Hungarian Union
Hello from croatia!
32:10 Amen. Had to revert my Steam copy to to pre-Leviathan though, now I finally can enjoy this game again. I'm terrified of what an EUV will look like in the beginning, given my last hype about something Paradox did (which was Imperator). EUIV looks almost cute and timeless, but dusty and grainy, but I honestly was no fan of the overall look IR, CK3, and now Victoria were given. Maybe there's an uncanny valley for grand strategy graphics.
What happened in Leviathan?
I'd grab the three privileges that give +1 mana each, one for each category. I'd also look over the other privileges, going down close to 0 crownland is not that bad. If you have 1% you can sell titles for the same price as if you had 10% and when you have 0% sooner or later an event will trigger so you'll get some crownland back. It's not that hard to then get it up high and rewoke unnecessary in time for Absolutism.
And wow, 0/0/0 sucks to start with, and even more so the fact you can't go and win an easy war and Show Strength(3*100 mana).
edit: also, don't be afraid to abuse the Privilege that gives you five loans with 1% interest, thety are really dirt cheap
trade scales up the most for income and is the most important source of income, production is the second best source of income, tax is the worst source of income and really is only good at the start of the game.
Taxes are nice early, but yeah otherwise they quickly drop off in importance.
thx for playing with my country
Anyone else shocked quill unpaused in the first episode? And not even at the end but at 14 min already.
Whoa whoa whoa croatian chungus time
Currahee - To stand alone whilst eating Curry
My country got some love ❤ thx Quill and I hope you can play it better then me, I crashed and burned so much time 😆
Love the content but the Lucifer reference made me like this instantly.
YESS FINNALY
Would you consider playing a new series. Apparently 1.34 had a huge upgrade that changed the game a lot, changes to the estates, better AI and I think all of the northern European countries now got their own missions trees, so would be nice to see you take on 1 of them.
YESSSSSSSS!!!!! EU4 HYPE
If i have no clue how to play euiv, do u have a good tutorial for me? I have a bunch of dlc for it. If i play along this lets play will that teach me a lot?
Thanks anyeay for uploading
You should run more estate stuff since the higher the equilibrium the faster loyalty come back :)
Running more would make it more difficult to get rid of them when you need to actually care about Absolutism. And even then, most of the others are just... Bad. Very few priveliges are worth running at all, let alone past AoA. The Monarch Point ones are the only ones you should have 100%, the others are either not worth at all, or barely break-even
What didn't you just do Savoy like a few months ago?
As someone who has never seen anything about this game it seems like ck3 on 2 tons of steroids 😂 I love the content quill!
Please do a Mughal run with the Timurids or Transoxiana!
Is the support independence from a DLC?
what happened to your playlists?
I've been running this game for hundreds of hours now with a banners mod and a graphical map pack mod, so now your vanilla game looks so dated to me! lol
You are playing my country (:
Sometimes I wonder if it would be worth it to trade in my ability to pronounce all these province names for the ability to run a strategy game youtube channel.
Aww yiss - more Paradox content
No offense quill but you just need to relax. all those penalties are minor. dropping loyalty below 30 will give rebels SOMETIMES and more often than not they are 1-2K total troops. its when you are big and you start dropping them below 10% that the big guns come out. the penalties from low crownland are not that bad. take the extra monarch power and slowly sieze land.
Yeah. It's meta to give privileges right at the start for +1 of each mana. If you wait until your crownland is higher, then (A) you've missed out on a ton of mana that you can never get back, and (B) you'll be much closer to the Age of Absolutism-when crownland really matters (for that sweet +15 max absolutism, etc.).
Algorithmic Engagement!
Spicy or sweet - that's your choice of curry favours ;)
All I see is the flag of Noord-Brabant in the top left
Form Dalmatian! Very strong tag. You need to change your primary culture
did the fix the game?
EU4 Nice
I'm sorry Quill you are wrong... Stellaris forever!
25:40 New Pope, who dis?
I believe Croatia became a starting nation in Emperor not Leviathan.
My name from Medieval 2 finally has relevance again...kinda
when it comes to eastern europe ... if you read J as Y you will make it.
Rijeka is pronounced r-yeh-kah.
Croatian colony game pleaseeeee 🙏🏼
in case you'd like a few pointers to help you with pronunciation:
you can treat the J as a Y - this is why for instance Yugoslavia is written as Jugoslavija
the I (capital letter i) pretty much sounds like how you say E in English (or like the i in "independence") - so for instance LIKA would sound like "leek+a", or even closer as "leak+a"
The A is the a in "alphabet" or "alpha"
the G is the g from "great" or "grate" or "gate"
Hope it helps a little, and hope you have fun playing in this small corner of the world
If that crash and burns, can you give Serbia a try? :)
I know he'll never see this, but do you need me to learn how to make playlists and make them for you?
EU4!!!!!
Eu4 ain't my favorite but it's good to get another series of it. Conquer the world!
insta clicked
Could have played Ragusa
lol he shows Dubrovnik in the thumbnail, says Zagreb and calls iz za-grab
At least I pronounce Rijeka correctly, right? Right?? :D
@@quill18 Reeyeka would be correct :D Also Celje is Slovenian, and its something like Zz (like in pizza) e LL (like in LLAMA, animal) e ( both Es are read as E in Embargo).
@@LingLingTheUltimate It's ryekah. The "i" is silent, it marks that the "eh" is long.
@@quill18 It's ryekah (a bit longer "eh"). The "i" is silent and denotes the length of e.
@@quill18 rijeka is also a croatian word for river
pronounciation tutorial :
j = y
c = ts
all other mistakes are trivial so dont bother with them. And this tutorial you can use for all slavic languages and most other languages in eastern and central europe.
Not hard to tell 98% of the game still confuses you in terms of minmaxing, and you're on not on Hard or VH (at least not VH) for those easy diplomatic actions 😅
For me all Paradox titles have to compare to CK3 now.
CK3 is a great base for a futur great game, but compare to CK2 it feel sooooo empty right now
@@niveh4076 I agree; the polish that the base game came with is fantastic, but longer gameplay felt a little aimless. The culture system in the upcoming update looks freaking amazing tho.
