    Dave shows how we change our ram promaster headlight replacement bulb. Changing your headlight bulb is an easy and inexpensive maintenance job. A few simple tools are needed and the bulbs range from $10 to $15. If your were to pay to have this service done you can expect a bill of $80 to $100.

    NOBODY COULD PRODUCE A BETTER VIDEO ON HEADLIGHT BULB REPAIR THAN BOTH OF YOU!!!
    After watching your other videos and seeing how thorough you explain complicated things I wanted to see this video knowing I likely will do such a repair in the future.
    The camera focusing is perfect, as is the lighting in otherwise dark areas under the hood.
    "The Devil is in the details." - You both spend the time showing how parts fit and need to correctly be taken apart and reassembled!
    As always, THANK YOU FOR POSTING!

Once I watch that part of the video a few times my light when on, figuratively, and I took the bulb out and put it in the right way. • @StepOnSpiders
    @StepOnSpiders Před 2 lety +4

    Just a few things to add after replacing both my headlight bulbs. Rather than plugging the bulb into the socket and then putting the bulb down into the bulb hole, its easier to seat the replacement bulb down in the bulb hole and then push the wiring plug down on the bulb after the bulb is already seated in place. This allows you to get the metal tab on the replacement bulb to go under the metal tab on the housing next to the hole for the bulb. Otherwise, you will be struggling to get the bulb's metal tab under the metal tab on the bulb housing. If you don't get your replacement bulbs seated just right, it will cause your headlights to diffuse in a wide pattern and look overly bright.

      I never would have thought of doing it this way. I have had major struggles with the damn plastic clip. On one side, I resorted to using electrical tape to keep it from coming out - couldn't get the tab to hold it. Such a bad design! I'm thrilled to have another method to try, now that the bulb has burned out on the other side.

  • @TheArecf
    @TheArecf Před 2 lety

    This is far and away the best explanation I have seen of how to change the lightbulbs on a ProMaster. I changed the bulbs, both sides highbeam and low beam, on our Winnebago Travato which is on a ProMaster 3500 chassis. These were the original equipment LLH7 bulbs and lasted over 5 years. These bulbs failed within a few days of each other. I would add to the procedure that it if it is difficult to screw in the round moisture barrier/covers, spraying a little Teflon dry lube onto a paper towel and wiping the blue gasket around the base of the round cover and then around the receptacle in to which it fits will make these covers go in much easier. I recommend against spraying the Teflon lubricant directly onto the round moisture barrier/covers or onto the receptacle area of the light fixture housing. When removing the lower panel, even being as careful as I could, i ended up breaking off one of the plastic tabls that help to secure this panel. I may glue the tab back onto this lower panel, however, with the tab missing, it sure is easier to remove this panel that with the tab still present. Since I installed Silvania Silverstar Ultra H7 bulbs, which have an estimated service life of 85 hours (that would be 1-2 years of night-time driving for me) I may need to change the bulbs again. I used to leave my low beam headlights on during gthe daytime, however, I will not longer do that gioven the projected service life of the Silverstar Ultra bulbs.

    At the last of it, you do place the bulb in the harness first, square tab on the bulb away from the clip; the grooves on the harness do line up with the keys on the stabilizer posts on either side; but you have to tip the bulb down a bit to get its flange under the retaining clip held by the hex head that you do not touch. Once bulb flange is under that clip, get the grooves on those keys. It looks so easy and it is; but can send a few minutes of frustration as with your hand in the hole, tough to see what is going on.

    Just saw another video on maybe why the bulbs die so early. There are weep holes need the windshield wiper bolts. When clogged they drip water on the bulb housing. I looked a mine and they both were clogged and spilling over. Easy to unclog with thin screwdriver. Would love to find a preventative measure though.

    Great video, but I don't think this is the way the engineers envisioned the procedure. You don't have to remove all of those body parts and the whole headlight assembly. It's not easy, but you can reach around behind the assembly and remove that round cover (on the rear of the assembly). You can then reach in and remove the bulb & socket. Replace the bulb in the socket, then push the bulb back into place. You can't really see what you're doing, rather it's all by feel so it helps to know how the socket releases and locks back into place (as you show in the video). If you do remove the whole assembly, beware that the headlight may no longer be aimed correctly and you'll need to use the up/down & right left adjustment screws to re-align it.

    You are really good at these instructional videos, makes me feel like I could do this and save a few bucks. I have a question that is off topic, I keep thinking back to your other video where you guys had the bags of ice and the windows open when it was hot. Do you think insulating makes that big of a difference? If you had it to do over again, would you? Most of the videos I have watched, everyone is insulating and say you have to. But, I've watched a couple where both people said they wouldn't bother if they had it to do over because it doesn't make that big of a difference and once you open the door you are basically at same temp as whatever outside is. Just curious as to what your thoughts may be on the subject. Thanks!

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  Před 5 lety

      +Sweetheart Mastiffs Great question!! I think if you do not insulate you are making a huge mistake.
      First off in cooler weather condensation will build on any exposed metal ceiling or walls..and not a little amount but lots! This leads to mold, mildew, and water damage if it gets to your sub flooring.
      Not insulating in warmer weather will make exposed metal in the ceiling and walls so hot you will burn yourself on contact...which I have done before 🤪
      Also if you were to leave your van in full sun (not insulated) while you shop for 30 minutes on a 70-degree day it will be approximately 104 degrees inside. Our van on a 70 degree day with an exhaust fan running will be right around 70 degrees.
      One last note. Insulation will help with noise reduction and may provide a better nights rest.
      I hope this feedback helps and thanks again for this great question 😀

    Great instructional video. I missed why you were changing the bulb. The reason I mention is that someone flashed their lights at me last evening. I'm thinking my driver side bulb is either too bright and/or shining directly into the drivercs vision in opposing traffic. Have you experienced this and do you know if there is a way to change the angle of the light piece where it doesn't shine in the driver's vision going opposing traffic direction?

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  Před 5 lety +1

      +stickybee2 We have the same trouble with getting flashed The extra weight we added during the build raised our front up enough to bright oncoming traffic.
      We are going to do a video on how to adjust the low beams soon. If you don’t wish to wait then look for a loop on the top back side of you headlight on the top. A driver with an Allen head will drop down in that loop and reach the adjustment screw. It’s plastic so be gentle. At 25 feet on level ground your light should be no higher then 26 inches. Or right below the driver side window on an average car at 25 feet.
      Hope this helps any more questions all be happy to try and answer.

      @stickybee2 Před 5 lety

      @@oneadVANtureatatime Thxs, I'm a visual person. So I'll wait for your video. Also, my rig now has a lift raising it 3.5 inches. So the amount of light adjustment I'm sure would differ from no more than 26" adjustment ?

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  Před 5 lety +1

      pretty sure you will still need to be under 26 inches or you will be blinding oncoming traffic. All do more research before we do the video to make sure 😀 3.5 inch lift!!! So very cool. Are you able to run bigger tires with that lift? Sound like an awesome van.

    • @stickybee2
      @stickybee2 Před 5 lety

      @@oneadVANtureatatime No worries on the research. I'll figure it out. Also, I do have bigger tires in respect to having more tread / wider tire rolling on the road. Just recently got the lift & tires. So still feeling it out. Was a bit squirrely on the handling when installed. When I got the 400 mile inspection, the folks that installed the kit re-torque everything & tighten tires, checked air pressure. Seems to be driving fine now with less float also. I also ordered a sway bar. It should improve handling tremendously. So it's work in progress.

    A quick question, do you unplug the battery when you're working on the headlights? The shop manual is adamant that the battery be unplugged. I'd love to not do that, because recovering all our settings is a pain. Thanks!

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  Před 2 lety

    Replaced my low beam on the driver's side and now my low beams shine too high. I tried adjusting with the torx 15 driver and it does nothing. I even adjusted the bottom screw (1 of 3) for the entire housing. Nothing is working. I've taken it apart 5 times and see what happened. Now I can change the bulb in less than 5 minutes lol. Taking my van in for an oil change and tire rotation tomorrow and I will have the dealer look at the light. This makes no sense to me. The housing is secure and straight.
