- I have been playing around with traditional archery and shooting it the various ways you can shoot a stick bow; 3 under, split finger, canting and a vertical hold. I shoot each way with a goal to hit the center of the target before moving to the next style and going further back.

In trad archery it's amazing how accurate you can be doing the wrong things consistently.
Accurate enough to end the chivalric era of warfare...there was nowhere near the level of scientific precision available to the average archer at Crecy...but they sure did a number of the French anyway

Split finger with bow canted seems to be your most accurate shooting style! Great video Jake!

Loved this. The trad community is probably the MOST opinionated group in archery. "Their way is the only way. They are most likely just jealous they can't pick up a trad bow and shoot it as well as you usng four different styles. Glad you're finding out how much fun this stuff is. Just wait until you get into instinctiive vs gap. You aint seen nothing yet.

You seem to shoot the best groups with split finger canted. I always shot split finger canted with index finger to corner of my mouth instinctive and won many tournaments, mostly 3-D and some field and indoor. Keep it going
I started trad shooting 3-under, got real good at 20-30yrds, however I noticed at 40-50yrs i was starting to be aiming at the air above the target, became pure guess work.
Switched to split finger, my long range shooting improved immensely. I find 3-under is extremely accurate short distance, but I shoot split because it's on average better over more distances.
I cant a little, and only to adjust if my arrow is going off to one side, usually canting a tiny bit gets the arrow back to hitting above the arrow tip when aiming. If a heavy can't is required, lean forward into the bow, so I still get a tight anchor.
Just started shooting, with a recurve, a couple of months ago. Learned a lot from a seasoned archer. Got the basics from him but i am now starting to develop my own style. As my instructor says: there is no correct style in trad archery. Whatever makes your arrows fly straight is right.. for you. There is no other right or wrong

I have to agree with Riley there. That said there may be one or two ways to do it wrong... Those are the ones that end up with someone looking confused in a doctors office wondering what the hell went sideways 😜😜. All archery should be fun I reckon so I'm glad you're enjoying Trad and that beauty of a bow!
I enjoy watching your journey into traditional archery, it's great. I have been a trad archer for about 40 years and I can tell you that you are doing it the right way by having fun, keeping an open mind, and finding a great bow that you like, and that fits you. Those basic attitudes, and equipment chooses will work well for you in the future. Good luck and happy shooting!
I am an old trad, I tried every style due to everyone saying this and that. I went back to my Howard Hill style and my bow is happy and I am too. Once you settle and are happy just ignore the Know it alls. Great video
Any style that works for you is the right way. It is very difficult to argue with results. The traditional archery community is very diverse in it's interests and shooting styles. I have never met a more welcoming group of people. To really experience it you have to attend a 3d shoot. Internet experts likely don't have a resume to back up opinion and definitely can't adjust between different styles as easily as you. Great video.
I'm going through alot of the same things you are , minus the public input . I'm keeping my ranges REALLY short till I'm more confident in my release . Tried three under for the first time , changing the brace height a bit , and testing the effects of a slight cant . Mixed results with some encouraging rounds ... some new targets at the range I'm using , but the BIGGEST News ... having fun slinging arrows !!!
What I love about this series is the "you learn by doing" feel. I always approach everything with an open mind so sometimes listening to others helps and sometimes it doesnt. But until you try, you never know what will work for you. Keep the series up Jake. Im truly enjoying this.
Jake, when you shoot split finger and canting the bow your groups are tighter than average and the arrows are quicker in the gold.

I love seeing you going for trad archery.
From my understanding canting the bow is similar to button adjustment, moving the button in and make it softer the more you cant.

4 yellow out of 6 split finger canted was impressive grouping for fun shooting, even at only 10 yds !
Your good performance with all different shooting styles just goes to show how important a smooth consistent shot cycle is .
I really enjoyed this video ,hope to see some more like it .Perhaps take the most successful style here, split finger canted bow and go through your shot cycle , anchor point and thought process would be interesting
Keep experimenting. That’s where the most fun is! I’m up in Minnesota where we still have some snow on the ground, so I love shooting vicariously with you!
Good stuff Jake. I've been shooting trad for two years. I went through a similar process trying to find the best technique for me. After much experimentation, I now shoot split finger with a slight cant. Shooting 3-under actually felt like a smoother release but I seem to get better results with split finger. Bottom line is I'm having fun.
Hey Jake...just starting to watch your channel...and congrats on deciding to take this journey. I've been shooting longbows and recurves, exclusively, for the past 67 years, give or take (self-taught), and I belong to the school that if you're not having fun then you're not doing it right. If there's any particular expertise I can claim it would have to be on the number of ways you can shoot an arrow and miss the target, and...shooting with fingers is the most difficult way there is of shooting a bow.
I would say what probably separates you most from beginning traditional shooters is your elevated ability to be self-critical. Most threads I've read from beginners seeking advice just tend to open the proverbial can of worms, given the number of things that can be involved when implementing changes.
I do appreciate your sharing your journey with others. I've never known a day of frustration shooting my bows...hope you continue to inspire others in a similar fashion. Enjoy, Rick.

You nailed it....have fun. But, it is real fun to feed your family with the bow. I have been doing that for 40+ years. The biggest key is get close and control it.

As a trad archer shooting either a recurve or flatbow I too have experimented with canting and vertical, though in the styles I shoot at competition I have to shoot split finger.
as you say and demonstrate it can be great fun to experiment and I find some of my bows shoot best vertical others canted. The degree of cant is hard to maintain and there are a few tips on how you can accomplish this.

I am with the Society for Creative Anachronism, and we do barebow archery Royal rounds. Those consist of six arrows untimed at the 20, 30, and 40 yards and a 30 second timed at the 20 yard.

When you try thumb, make sure you try different draw lengths. Completely different feeling and body position.
Usually when I go shoot some arrows, I grab my manchu (35" draw), a han or a tang bow (at 32-33"), and a ottoman (28-29")
Too much fun. I am SFSCDRI+SV Split Finger Small Cant Dynamic Release Instinctive + Split Vision. Oh, if you don't do it like i do it you are doing it right and its not trad. LOL Shooting my very trad Samick Discovery with traditional carbon foam lims, Spig rest, beiter plunger, traditional carbon arrows and a glove. my way or you are really a compound shooter :)
Great video. Long time traditional shooter here. I couldn't really get a good look at your bow rest as compared to your hand placement. In my humble opinion to be able to shoot a bow while canting the arrow has to be really close to the hand. For example if your using a elevated rest (think berget button with spring arm) The difference will be huge in canting the bow as opposed to if the arrow is really close to your bow hand. A trad bow with the arrow shelf made to be as close to your hand will allow a bow to be shot more consistent while canting.
I was once told by a top traditional shooter you can use your foot to hold the bow away from you while you can anchor at your belly button AS LONG AS YOUR CONSISTENT. However there are certain ways or forms that lead you to be way more consistent.
Dude, stick bow builder here... you're pretty damn good with that thing especially if you normally shoot compounds!

Your beginner videos really helped me in my early days get on target and once I was confident i could hit the target, I tried all of these different shot styles eventually settling on 3 under, slight cant with my Bear Montana longbow

Jake. Don’t worry about what others say. Trad archery is a journey. Above all it’s your journey. Have fun. It’s a lifestyle! The can’t just helps open up the sight window. Helps intuitive racers stay focused on the target. It also is somewhat necessary due to a side of the face anchor. Shoot straight. I will be seeing you soon for some form lessons.
Great video. I have finally developed my main technique but, I still experiment with canting and stuff. I can even shoot sitting down now. Lots of fun.

I personally think canting the bow looks sexy. I also think recurve bows are just ugly but to each his own.

I had fun watching this. I shoot split finger with a (approximately) 15º to 20º cant. That’s not because I think its technically correct, but because it works for me. I really get a kick out of the armchair experts who think they are the purists of trad shooting. They can do whatever works for them. I’ll continue to experiment, but primarily do what seems to work best for me. What I like most about trad / instinctive archery is the constant compensation. For me, that’s what makes it fun.
The definition of traditional is whatever I use and however I shoot. If you use or do anything different you can’t be traditional. LoL. Enjoy your channel, keep up the good work.

When you get around to shooting thumb draw, try shooting with the arrow on the inside of the bow, your left side, I shoot 400spine and 500spine through a 60# Assyrian horse bow and the arrows fly straight. It all has to do with the direction the string is released and the direction of flex of the arrow.
Hey Jake greetings from Germany i am shooting traditionell for 2 years now and just ordered the second edition of the total archery book. Trying to get better form and really hoping you make an Updated to the KSL / NTS System for Trad archery as some aspects are quite diffrent like anchor and i would really like to get a good system for myself as i dont have anybody for training and want to get better for my 3D Tournaments. Good video but would love to see you do a Howard hill video about his shooting style and what are the pros and cons vs Olympic style archery, but using a bow that Howard Hill would have used like a hill style bow
When it comes to "styles" I would recommend following some of the things I am working on with comments from an expert, you. First always hit a strong and consistent anchor. If canting is not allowing that, then you need to stop what appears to be overly canting. Next pay attention to posture. Over canting can cause hunching and overall poor posture. As to 3 under vs split, 3 under with gaps and/or crawls will help with short distance accuracy. That is the only competitive barebow style following the current trends and rules. Personally I like the fun of split and totally instinctive shooting. It also works for long ranges such as field. One other "style" I have been trying to perfect is pulling through the shot. When properly executed that will mean at least a couple of seconds at anchor before the release. Many of your demo shots are very close to snap shooting. TP is just a step away when your subconscious steps in and decides to short cut the process. Yes I guess this is my "opinion" but it is also consistent to what you have learned and practiced and are teaching over decades of shooting.
What about the trad asiatic bow? Without the arrow rest. Love to see you try that. You can choose thumb draw, split, 3 under, pinch draw whatever. Also arrow at the left side of bow or right. More fun🎉
As far as canting I've just always done what feels natural (top limb at about 1 o'clock rather than straight vertical)

Cant to the bow is good for arrow flight when you don't have a cut to/past center bow. But if your bow is cut to or past center, canting the bow doesn't really help arrow flight. It just changes your sight picture. A cant will open it up the sight picture a bit, but you also have to adjust your anchor point to get the arrow under your eye the same as vertical. Like you said, you can't make everyone happy, so shoot how you feel comfortable.
Now I am not sure if you have tried it yet. You may enjoy trying bow fishing with your new bow, I am finally setting up my tradbow with a real using a great northern gadget adapter to strap a reel on the front of the bow. Just an idea if you want to try new things with your bow. Glad you're enjoying traditional archery man!

Closer in and at 15 yards the better groups came from Cant/split finger style. It seems that is what suits you best.....
From my perspective almost all the "do it this way" stuff relates to the rules of the various societies that I shoot. Many of the opinions on "you are" doing it wrong seem to be peoples personal opinion.
For me I like a Pin sight on my compound it tends to involve less fiddling, unfortunately the society that most of shooting is currently with doesn't approve of pins
I am thinking split fingers are working magic for u Jake..I shot split finger all my life and with my #54 Super Kodiak I was shooting bullseyes very consistently out to 25 yards. But that was 20 years ago..I shot compounds for years, but now want to get a #40 recurve.
I shot trad a long time... split finger, mostly vertical with only a slight cant, and approximately a 1-2 second hold at anchor... this is absolutely THE right way to shoot trad. I would encourage you to stop 'enjoying yourself' and 'experimenting' and just save yourself a lot of time and just start shooting my way... or else I will be pissed and you will feel my wrath in your comments for as long as you decide to ignore this one true trad path. 🤣😉
After playing with trad bows for a while split finger with a slight cant was always the most consistent and most natural feeling, it looks like you do well with the same style too!

Just ordered a Zhu Ran 40lb at 28'. So with my draw should be well over 60lbs.
Do whatever works for you. There is no perfect style. If you hit the bullseye or whatever your shooting at, then mission accomplished

Rofl....just enjoy the process of finding 'your' way brother..I'ma blend of O.R. , compound, and trad, KSL draw cycle to save my shoulders being old timer, split fing cuz it's the one I could do cleanly the fastest when I made the switch to single string, but anchor mid finger corner mouth, compound posture, or what I call a square shooting frame and just tiny bit of can't from quiver but not even 1 o'clock, more like 1230., gets me chest and arm clearance for clothes in tree stand when freezing, no arm guard needed in summer in yard, just to keep jacket sleeve tucked when hunting, I use arrow I think to aim on left and right but don't really look at it, gaps so big from split, up and down is just instictive...it works FOR ME...was a blast trying 100 dif combos of cant and hooks, anchors, enjoy!
I'm trying out the canted style, but I don't know how to do it consistently. Is there a way to cant and lean the exact same amount every time?

If you had a bow to shoot thumb draw style with a thumb ring you would have made me happier with more ways to shoot... thumb is strongest finger any way but to each his or her own... I shoot archery in many different ways myself... my main goal which I met with most of my bows I own is hitting cans from thirty yards... got good at it... waiting on a new "Thumb Ring" myself for my Mongolian horse bow I love so I can practice thumb draw hitting cans from thirty yards... it is a 13th Century style Mongolian bow.... have two actually...but any way I have a huge collection of bows and crossbows as well as gunpowder versions of ballistic gear. (Rifles and shotguns)... I got started back into archery I had been doing from childhood due to a doctor telling me it would help with depth perception due to my bad eyes and eye surgeries and a lot more... and been cut in half twice with organ transplants... two organs I got... and lost my left leg in 2018 and never thought I would be able to string my bows again with a missing left leg again and back into it full speed and practice in it all has brought my messed up body back up to speed with archery, hiking long distances, and more. Helps my balance as well... so any way I'm not a competitive archery individual... self help for my body and for hunting to be ethical when hitting an animal for food on my table so being the best at it possible is my goal... for hunting... even got into Flu Flu archery and love it as well... wish you the best and thanks for the video and wish all your archery enthusiasts the best as well. I canter and shoot many different angles and what is important to me is hitting what you aim for with out injuring yourself and how people do it is up to them after learning the basics... everyone has various archery techniques and all of them that work to bring a meal to a table is success to me... the rest in competition and such to me is not as important. Any way wish all of you the best... be safe in all you do in archery and this hunting season I will be fully prepared for some of my goals, Thanksgiving turkey and a Christmas goose for the table and I will be happy... LOL! Maybe a deer if I empty my deep freezer enough by hunting season... have to work on that... eating the food in it... LOL!
I have shot barebow for 50 years, Just shoot the bow like so works for you. Dont pay any attention to all the beer joint experts.

if you shoot only 3 or 4 arrows (like in competition) you are more concentrated and the results should be better
3 fingers under like a classical barerbow (high aiming point) is the more precise but it hurts the longbow (lower limb) and the risk is to break
most monobloc bows are built with +0,5 (up) tilller then the mechanic is optimised (center, speed) with the mediterranean way
exepted if you buy a custom longbow and ask to have 0,00 tiller but there must be some tests before (problem with the guarantee) !

As far as everyone giving you their opinion on what is the best way to shoot, it's like I tell my wife. If you would just realize that I am always right we would get along a lot better. Ya, that's what she said too. Just enjoy shooting and ignore everyone, including me.
My anchor point is right on the jaw bone/ under the ear. It's consistent and gives me a draw of 29 inches. Also I can cheat with it and almost hold to re aquire a sight picture if I think I'm off. The nose slap is ridiculous though... it's time to experiment with other anchor points. My beak can't take it anymore lol.

Don't mess with the trad police! Years ago i was the first one to buy an ILF hunting bow in our club. I got a lot of hate, because it's not trad with all the screws, adjustable tiller and stuff! In my new club a selfbow guy refused to go to on the 3D course with me, because i use a metal riser. I'm still shooting instinctive, like i always did. This "trad thing" is quite bad here in Germany. Sometimes you're not allowed on trad tournaments with metal bows. But most trad nazis i know have carbon in their bows limbs, under wooden veneer of course, and use carbon arrows with wooden finish.
