The Eyes Have It: Making Eyes the Easiest Part of Painting! [How I Paint Things]

  • Let's face it, we've all messed up a face or two in our time while holding our breath and jabbing haplessly at a miniature trying to dot the eyes. Luckily, there's an easier way! A classic tip that used to do the rounds in modeling magazines and club painting nights of old, shared many years later online. The beauty of the internet!
    Today's miniature comes from Broken Anvil Miniatures, which you can find here: www.myminifactory.com/users/B... If you haven't got a printer, a quick Google search pointed out a couple of Etsy stores selling licensed prints; try contacting Broken Anvil directly if you need to know who's available in your area.

    For the center of the eyes, you can try using a micron pen instead of a tiny brush instead, might be slightly easier. Just make sure it's properly dried before doing anything else!

    Great Vid as always, thank you! I am painting larger scales (40 and mostly 54mm). When you paint the eyeballs of these large figures in white, the eyes are "glowing". I use Vallejos Pale Grey Blue instead, which I think looks more realistic.

    This is pratically the same method I use for painting eyes, also if most of my figs are with enclosed helmets, (military sci-fi), the only difference being that I use VGC Bone White in place of pure White, it give more contrast with the black, and with females I add a bit of red for make up on the upper eye.

    This is the exact method I use for eyes. I find just having eyes is often enough to 'excuse' other mistakes, after all faces & bases make a figure and usually the viewer's brain glosses over some mistakes that would otherwise be a bit more obvious

  • @MrCrystalwarrior1
    @MrCrystalwarrior1 Před rokem +3

    One way I "paint" eyes is to do the black outline, then the white line for the inner area, followed by a small fine point marker pen to dot the "pupil" to finish. I get the pens from my local art shop, and they're perfect for just dotting the eye, or for adding fine lines on clothing patterns, such as tartans etc. Saved me having a total mental breakdown on may occasions, believe me :-D

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před rokem +1

      I'll have to see if I can't find some locally, especially for painting tartan that sounds a real brain saver!

    • @MrCrystalwarrior1
      @MrCrystalwarrior1 Před rokem +3

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio They're "Unipin Fine Line" pens, and come in a variety of colours and nib sizes. I use a 01 tip for dotting eyes on 25/28mm scale figures, and for doing fine line tartan effects on things like work shirts and kilts, but they also do larger nibs and so for larger scale figures.busts, you can even do a coloured iris and outline it with a fine tip, then add the pupil with a slightly smaller tip than you used for the iris. It's saved me countless hours/screaming fits since I found them in my local art shop, and they're very economically priced, too :-) If I find any more tips that I use to do things, I'll keep you posted, as you've helped me with so many of your videos, so it's only fair that I return the favour to you and other viewers :-D

    Same method works well for larger scale miniatures (75 and 120mm.) Only difference is in those scales, you can bring in some iris colors (blue, light brown, green.) This is the one time I really like doing the little stuff first.

    This is my favorite method for eyes and works surprisingly well with far less effort than you'd imagine. I do wonder how you'd modify it if you're using Contrast, Speedpaints and the like, where you don't have an opaque skintone to clean up mistakes...

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před rokem +1

      Mostly it's to frame the eye and give it a little shading. Pure white without anything around it will look quite blank and 'staring' on a miniature, so giving it a little black outlining helps to define edges.

    I hope I can make this sound like the compliment it's meant to be: love your work, but sometimes I find the skin on your minis to be the least convincing part, esp highlighting of muscles. This minis skin I utterly adore. Did you do something different?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před rokem

      Well, yeah. 😅 Ordinarily I'm not really going for 'convincing,' I'm going for something which is more bold lines that're visible on the tabletop. Something like this I'm spending a little more time on because I want her to photograph better; she's meant to be viewed up close. Following along with the Old West Marshal video is how I did most of the skin on this one, with a couple extra glazes on the cheeks and lip.
