From Averland to Mordheim - Contrast & Ivory for Old World Miniatures [How I Paint Things]

- One of the most useful things about mixing Ivory into whatever you're using for a highlight is that it cuts down on the number of extra paints you've got to go out and buy. As long as you've got a bottle of Ivory to hand, chances are good you can paint just about anything! Some highlights might look a little washed out by comparison, but that's the fun in experimentation.

Biggest tip? Shoving a stick through the back of the GW paint pot to keep the lid open - thanks!!!!
REALLY digging the ivory+contrast to highlight, limits the paints needed and makes a lot of sense, 10/10
Damn. I think I’ll be rewatching this video multiple times. The finished product is phenomenal and definitely doable for the average painter. You’re done it again Troy. My number one painting coach on CZcams.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched your Afrika Korps video to help paint up my vehicles. I would love to send you some photos of my finished products.
Great looking minis! Its so weird to see Mordheim becoming so popular again.
I think there's always been a lot of nostalgia for the game, and fewer folks were playing as 'official' miniatures became a little harder to come by... but with so many good proxies these days, it's a kind of renaissance!
OK, using the brush protector to keep the pot lid open (and not dripping down the back of the bottle) is a great life hack and I thank you for it!
So glad Mordhiem is having a resurgence! Been making terrain for it for months
I can watch you paint all day. Doesnt even matter what miniature it is, you always have an amazing end result
Wow! Ivory added to contrast/speedpaint is a gamechanger! Thanks for this one!
Using the same contrast paint mixed with ivory for highlights, clever!
Excellent work and thanks for the tip, I'll give a go! Now your figure is ready for a game of Mordheim.
As a dortmund fan I love the colour scheme on this figure, yet another great video.
Brown trousers are a good choice for anyone going to face the terrors of Mordheim.
That's a lovely paint job. With those eyebrows, this guy looks like Milo O'Shea.
They're pretty intense, right? 😂
Well, I read that this....fact was one of the reasons european armies switched trousers ' colours with darker tones. Jokes apart, this method of highlights with Ivory is interesting, I think that I'll give a try.
The figure seems useful for a lot of scenarios, also seems compatible with WGA's Conquistadores.
@@alessiodecarolis Ah, yes, the 16th Regiments, the King's Own Skidmarks.
This is awesome seeing a Mordheim mini painted
Love love love Vae Victis Miniatures. Their stuff is always top notch
If you were to do more Mordheim videos I definitely wouldn't be opposed to them😄
Thanks so much for painting our model! It looks really really good for a process that looks accessible! I think I'll have to try this myself for my Legion and Mordheim minis , not feeling like doing the classic base, shade, highlights for that many miniatures haha!!
A Very Special Thank you , Troy .
🐺
Great video!! All up for Mordheim content !!
Lon Chaney Wolf Man eyebrows! :)
I do like prominent eyebrows depending on the sculpt and character. Not good on a princess but great on a wizard.
This is a fantastic result. When Contrast Paint first came out I used to add white to each colour to highlight (stopped doing it due to everything looking cold). I will try adding VJ Ivory instead and go for this warmer type look/feel. Brilliant video, thank you :)
Great work
I’m painting an averland army at the moment after a long break from the hobby, never used contrast paints but I think I may have to pick some up after this, made it look allot easier then the way I’m painting the yellow!!
Yellow can be a real bugger to pin down the way you'd like. I always find it easier to start super light and dull it down if necessary rather than trying to start from a darker colour and build up.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio do you have an instagram or fb I can send some photos over of my minis? Would be handy to have some Pointers!
Love the idea of the wash over the contrast. Sadly I only have Army Painter speed paints as my Contrast type paints. So, I think the reactivation property will make an absolute mess if I did that.
Posssssssibly? I couldn't really say; some folks seem to insist it's fine if you 'let them dry long enough.' It might be worth trying it over a varnish, too.
Great video.
Always love your videos sonic! I sit on the wash and drybrush spectrum but your highlights look so simple and marvellously effective. Think I need to push myself along for some miniatures and try your highlights.
Yay Mordheim / Old World painting!
interesting. ivory maybe saves paint costs if you only have contrasts. I just highlight in an appropriate regular color cus I have lots of everything.
Contrast on the face really does a good job of approximating the eyes, must really try that more as my skills arnt great at eyes
this looks like a great mini to paint and love the colour you choose to paint the guy. since i have no ivory, i will try and use palid witch flesh instead
That looks excellent! 🙂👍
Very nice great fodder for vampires.
"Come at me, Vlad!" 😄
Cor - what a beaut of a paint job! Simple yet great fiiinish. I'm going to have to steal this for my Wargames Atlantic Conquistadors - just out of interest, do you think you could add the ivory to army painter speed paints for a highlight?
I couldn't really say. I haven't any experience with the Speedpaint line, so... enh? Mmmmaaaaybe? 😅
How amazing would it be if the old world release led to a new edition of Mordheim?
Where is the Mordheim fish?!?
😂 Not everybody had a fish! I was tempted to put a fish decal on his shield, but all I had was a shark and that seems a bit more dangerous than the usual Mordheim fish.
That Dortmundland henchman looks ready to take on some arrogant Bayerland militias. It's well deserved 😬 .
I still can't like contrast however what you've figured out with this method brings way more the final product with way less work than suck chop or slap nuts or whatever it's called.
Troy have you ever found the wash reacts with the original contrast paint
Not with Contrast or Vallejo's Xpress. I've not got any of the Army Painter Speedpaints to compare, but if they reactivated with a little acrylic over the top, I can't imagine what a wash would do.
Do you also highlighted the Face with ivory and Contrast paint?
Yup. 12:35 or so.
I guess I would have problem following this tutorial using army painter speedpaint instead of gw contrast because of the reactivation problem, am I right?
Possibly? I couldn't really say; the reactivation means that Speedpaint basically doesn't work with the way I paint, so I haven't given them a shot. I need to be able to paint over dry paint. 😅 You might find it works if you apply all your base coats, then leave it to dry a while and seal with a matt varnish before shading over top?
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Someone uses reactivation willingly for creating certain effects, but I think it's often pretty annoying. Well, great video anyway!
How many times in your life have you been told you sound like Richard Morecroft? I can't be the first to tell you this.
28 mm ?
