- It was time to haul out my DeFever 44 Offshore Cruiser for a much needed bottom job, an out of water survey so that I can renew my insurance, and some necessary maintenance to keep the boat afloat! I also finally pay off the tease by disclosing the total costs that I have incurred over the last 6 years for maintenance, repairs, and upgrades, so that you know what it may cost when owning and operating a boat, yacht, or trawler of this size and age. The cost may or may not come as a surprise!

Thanks for the break down of costs. If that is your full time home, then the cost are relatively comparable to a sticks and bricks home. If the yacht is just a hobby, then one certainly needs deep pockets.
I just used Austin Miley to survey a boat in Cape Canaveral a couple weeks ago. He is very thorough, professional and saved me a lot of money. Because of his findings I decided not to purchase the boat. I highly recommend his services and do yourselves a favor, do the oil analysis!
Mark, thanks so much! And indeed, I have always said that maintaining a boat that you live aboard is very comparable to the upkeep of a land based home, monetarily. It’s just a different type of upkeep. The cost of a boat always gets a bad wrap because of the folks who have a home and a boat simultaneously. That’s so great that you used Austin! He and his father are such great guys, are great to work with, and know there stuff! Glad Austin saved you a ton!
Up here on the Great Lakes nearly all boats have to get hauled out every fall no matter what. It's just part of life. It does give is lots of time to do the underwater maintenance and things.
It’s crazy to think about hauling your boat every season. But you are right, the silver lining is that it can help you stay on top of that below the waterline maintenance
Here in Maryland in the upper Chesapeake bay, we have a slew of great marinas, self-serve full-service you name it it's available your average mom and Pa Marina is very reasonable in the upper Chesapeake area

This video is the perfect example of why i got so good at doing my own work lol. Nothing is cheap when it comes to working on vessels and my limited budget and wanting to contiually upgrade served me well over time. The labor is the most difficult and you certainly must know what you can do, and what pays to have the yard do. Its a delicate balance that takes alot of preplanning and preperation for sure. You've done a great job thus far my friend.
You hit the nail on the head. I have only been able to afford this vessel because I self perform the majority of the work. And I have definitely learned what I am cool with handling and what services I’d rather pay for somebody else to do. I would have liked to have done a lot of the work at the yard myself but couldn’t afford the time away from work at that time. Also, only one of those yards up salt creek allows self service these days, and apparently they had quite the wait list. Always appreciate the support, Doug!
@@AquaCultured i did alot of work on mine at Salt creek boatworks. They have always been busy lol. Hope someday i can get back down there and we can meet up for a frosty adult beverage.

Cabrales boatyard Puerto peñasco Baja California. You can live onyour boat, do your own work without a corking fee for everything and your only 4 hours away from Phoenix Arizona if you need to do a USA run for stuff. And there extremely affordable friendly and the best.

I use Snead Island Boat Works, they're a great group and very knowledgeable. Not the cheapest, but once you do cheap, you'll never make that mistake again. lol,, Love the Defever and I consider it one of the best for full time liveaboards. We sold our 40' Cruiser and are starting the trawler search.

Have been following for awhile. Was a sailor am now a power boater - GB 42. We have a westerbeke gen and enjoyed your vids on the overhaul. Currently on the hard at Safe Cove in Port Charlotte. Great hurricane yard for haul out. BTW we are on Anna Maria Isl and can related to your local vids. Hope to meet up one day. Going to the Baltimore Trawler Fest in a couple of weeks. Nice job Butch, clear, concise, detailed. Could you now do a video where you add in the ongoing costs you mentioned... slip fee, insurance, utilities/fuel... for an overall annual cost. As Mark P. points out, seems a reasonable cost for a full-time place to live (with unique, priceless lifestyle benefits).

Trust me, if you had a house you would spend a lot more than that. A contractor wanted 35k (labour) for a small brick and stone courtyard job that I ended up doing myself (no prior experience) for the price of the material ($1500).
Houses aren't cheap either right.
Exactly what I was hoping to hear! Boats typically get a bad wrap from the ones that own a house and a boat. But when the boat is your one and only home, it is no more expensive than a home

I have had someone tell me to estimate in a budget $1k a month for repairs and general maintenance. This seems about right.
Couple you provide estimates on insurance and marina fees? I know that can vary greatly but just looking for ballparks.
Trying to plan for how I early I purchase my trawler before I can actually be on the boat more regularly.
I will actually be posting a video on that topic this week! In regards to the $1k a month, yeah that could very well be a good assumption. Of course it is highly variable, you could go months without any significant maintenance needs, and then one month it will be $5k-10k in items.
I have used Sailors Wharf as well. Great guys and great work. Unfortunately, I think they are being surrounded by land developers. I hope they dont sell

Lol...that 40k figure. I spent almost exactly that in 10 months because i did it all at once non stop 10 hours a day 6 days a week as a retiree Oomph. I won’t do that again without help. Did it all myself. Just about killed me. And I was a professional marine boat builder with shit loads of experience, so there was no learning curve or drinking beers. Just hard fast crank it out work.
On this video of yours I only have one question. I want to get larger factory rudders so I have better slow speed control. Your rudders are different from the standard 1984 DeFever rudders. Did you do that change yourself? My rudders don’t bolt up to the stuffing box from below like yours. There solid all the way through to the stuffing box.
Oh man! That is certainly a grind! Would love to see what work you accomplished, especially as an accomplished boat builder. That is a ton of work! It is great that you were able to just knock it all out and get ‘er done!
I was lucky and my boat happened to come that way with the rudders.

I purchased the boat for around $170,000
