My wife and I love the Moosehead Lake area, we vacation up there whenever we can. 2 years ago we stayed in a completely off grid cabin on Duck Cove. Absolutely loved it!
Always bring some dryer lint with you in a baggie. It weighs nothing and takes up virtually no space. It's a brilliant fire starter as it lights up instantly and holds the flame long enough for your birch bark or twigs to catch fire. If you're not hiking and weight and volume isn't problem, you can also make your own fire starters: Just fill the hollows of an egg carton with lint and then pour some melted wax from old candle stubs into each hollow, letting it soak into the lint. Don't soak all of the lint so some stays dry so you can easily light it.
Spent many a summer on Moosehead lake. I remember getting to take the boat up to the Indian store. I don’t remember the name but had a wooden Indian out front so we called it that. They had chocolates that looked like rocks. I loved them. That was 45 years ago. My parents went camping on Moosehead for their honeymoon. My mom had never been camping. She said she learned when you brush your teeth in the lake, don’t spit into the wind.
I miss rain. I miss cold weather. I miss seasons. The Houston area really sucks this time of year, and this summer is worse than most. Thanks for sharing your beautiful corner of the world. I can always dream!
Where are the guidelines for where wilderness/backcountry camping is allowed there now? Hard to find any info without campgrounds coming up. Also, you’ll have better luck with your ferro rod if you set the base of it where you want to throw sparks, hold your knife/steel in place and pull against it back with the rod instead of the other way around. That way sparks won’t fly all over. Usually takes me 2-3 strikes max to get an ember going
It's the humid / dampness we get here in the summers here in Maine..it's not as easy to start fires.. and your allowed to camp at the designated primitive camps off the logging roads in that region around moosehead.. this one I can tell isn't one marked on any map even the gazettetier.. but no one is going to bother you regardless because it is so remote and he is off the beaten path. Maybe a warden by freak chance on the water spots the fire and investigates but that is pretty slim to none especially if your low key. This spot is gold. Nice and tranquil with no neighbors. These aren't easy to find unless you have a beater or small SUV/truck.
Very relaxing. Brought back memories of being in Boy Scouts back in the sixties. (Gave away my age)
Beautiful views of the lake. Thanks post 10. Just lovely!

Awesome place!
Cool place to take a date. Good to see you found a mate. Best of luck with that. Beautiful setting for a campfire under the stars.

Nice fire!

The ride up route 15! 😀
I live a mile & a half off 15.
Are you burning cans in the fire pit? I hope you at least cleaned out the metal after.
Oh wow I was up there about 20 years ago mainly to see moose. Counted 57 but probably saw some more than once.

Here in California if you look at the dry grass wrong it bursts into flame!
