  • r/AmITheA**hole In today's episode, OP gets his $2500 bicycle stolen by some spoiled teenager. Luckily, he's able to find that his bike is being sold on Facebook marketplace, so he goes to confront the teen. He's surprised to discover that the teenager's mom is there with the bike, trying to sell it. He calls the cops to get the teenager arrested, and later the teen's dad calls up OP for some good old-fashioned witness intimidation. Surprise! The father got arrested too!

That was just an opinion and he could've changed. But, if he was constantly stalking and harassing the other, most certaintly wasn't just an opinion, and if he defends himself about that, it just makes it worse.

Exactly. If he'd gotten rid of the cat because he somehow mistook it for a stray and didn't realize the truth until it was too late, *that* would have been a mistake. Getting rid of the cat deliberately was a wrong. Don't call it a mistake when it was fully deliberate. I'm legally blind without my glasses. It sucks, but its been my life. I can still see enough not to trip over stuff - blobs are VERY good warning for your brain to say, "hey... something's there, be careful"
Yeah, it's been scary when my glasses broke, knowing I'd have to wait at least TWO WEEKS for replacements to be made (they usually cannot be made "in house" due to a combo of bad eyesight, astigmatism, and something that's supposed to help my lazy eye stay on track better).
But... I deal. While I no longer drive (seizures), I just didn't drive those weeks I waited. I was extra careful with everything I did.
I didn't ever require people around me CONSTANTLY. I'd get extra help for things like cutting stuff in the kitchen - and only because I don't trust myself. People to drive me. Shopping. Other than that... I'm good. I just see BLOBS.
In fact, when my seizures first started, I stopped wearing my glasses as much around the house. At first, I wore them on a chain arpund my neck. As I grew more confident, they stayed on my nightstand except for important tasks (kitchen, documents, etc) and when I leave the house. I hold my phone at the 1 spot where things are only about 25-50% fuzzy to watch youtube, play games, text, etc. I rarely watch an actual TV.
      So...
Laura, IMO, is just playing the sympathy/disability card to get rid of her sister. Yeah, what Lily did was wrong, but a very important thing to note: she felt bad about it immediately. Not ONCE in that story does it sound like Laura gave a crap about what she did to her sister that caused her to lose her lenses.
Here's another thing that bugged me. WHY DIDNT A PARENT TAKE LAURA BACK TO HER CAMPUS TO GET HER OTHER SET OF GLASSES, and leave the other parent with Lily? It was only "a couple hours" away, close enough that Laura was home on weekends.
I sense a "golden child"... or at the least, spoiled/entitled. No punishment for hurting lil sis. None. But lil sis gets SENT AWAY for retaliating the only way her young mind could think of that would be equal to her own pain.

And as inexcusable as her behavior was, it didn't happen in a vacuum. There's a history there and what we know of Lily's treatment of her sister makes it hard for me to see her as an innocent victim.
Laura was being cruel but teasing isn't crippling. They're not even in the same ballpark. Both myself and my brother fought growing up, as brothers often do, and we teased each other just as mercilessly. But we never fucked with each other's glasses. It never even occurred to me as an option until just now. Maybe it's indicative of Lily's treatment of Laura; maybe not. But for the two of them to be going at each other like this there has to be a back story. I'm not willing to just slap the "bully" label on the older one without hearing that story.

She sent the girl, her own younger sister, to bed in tears with all that torment. If I were her I wouldve lost myself in the frustration and anger too. But the thing is, even after Laura bitching about Lilys boyfriend leaving, once she realised how severe what she had done was and saw how Laura got upset, Lily immediately regretted what she did. Lily should be punished for what she did but kicking her out, a teenage girl with nowhere to go, is going way too far. A buddy of mine had a situation like that happen to him when we were Juniors in High School. His parents got divorced (turned out mom cheated but we didn't know that right away), dad moved a couple of hours away back to his family's farm. Mom decided to let her paramour who she was cheating with move into their home about 3 months later after the divorce was final. The guy was a grade a douche but he and my buddy's mom were a perfect couple because they were both kind of skanky and drank a lot. Hell, his mom hit on me several times when I was over there and before and after she was divorced and I was 16 years old.
Anyway, this Douchey Guy started laying down all kinds of laws on my buddy and his 3 sisters who were younger than my buddy. He would walk around the house like a dictator and mom was too drunk or drugged out to object. He was very verbally abusive but wasn't physical because even he was smart enough to know he would end up buried in farmer's field if he did. Douchey was also acting (non-sexual touching) and saying inappropriate things to the sisters, even when mom was around and she would just laugh it off. My buddy's dad had left many tools in the garage for us to use as we were rebuilding the motor on a 1970 Ford Mustang Fastback that had been sitting in his grandpa's barn at the farm for several years.
Douchey didn't like that he had to park his newer and very plain Chev Monte Carlo outside and couldn't put it in the garage because we had the Mustang in it and parts scattered all over the other stall of the garage. We had a baseball game on a Saturday that got rained out part way thru and so we got back early and when we got back, the tools were in the process of being loaded up into the back of some losers truck and the mustang was on a trailer hooked behind this truck.
As you can imagine, all hell broke loose. Mom was in the house in a near pass-out drunk state and also on a few quaaludes so she was useless and didn't even realize what was going on. We told Douchey and the other guy to unload the mustang and the tools or we would call the cops and before the cops got there we would kick the shit out of them. My buddy was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and I was a 6'7" 265 lb State Wrestling Champion so it would not have gone well for them.
Douchey tried to argue and the other guy actually started to unload the stuff from the truck. It turns out he worked with Douchey and had "bought" all this stuff from Douchey. Except, it wasn't Douchey's to sell, and when we explained that, the dude quickly relented. Douchey was still trying to act tough and argue but my buddy had had enough. He called his dad and had him come over there and also the cops. When the cops came, he had his sisters who were like 8, 10, and 13 talk to the cops about the things Douchey would say to them and his "touching" he liked to do. Also, it turned out his "touching" had ramped up to "rubbing" when he would sneak into their bedrooms at night. He threatened the girls and said to them that if they told anyone that both their mother and brother would get seriously hurt and probably die and then he would throw the girls out of the house and they would end up in foster care far away. They didn't know any better so they didn't say anything.
The cops tried to talk to mom, but she was too out of it. They ended up arresting Douchey and mom, but mom was taken to the hospital to dry out first because she was so unresponsive from the alcohol and drugs. The dad ended up moving back into the home because once mom got bailed out she had to go right into a treatment facility to avoid serious jail time and Douchey had a restraining order against him and my buddy either sold or threw away all of his clothes and things lol. The dad ended up back in court and got full physical and legal custody of the kids and got the home as well for them to all live in.
Over the years we would see Douchey at a bar from time to time and whenever we did, we would harass him unmercifully and on several occasions, he ended up beaten in the bar parking lot by "unknown assailants" lol. The mom had some issues for a few years and eventually cleaned her act up and joined a church and swung to the other side of the pendulum and went bat shit crazy with her religion. Sadly, that didn't work out well for her and she ended up alienating all of the kids and her side of the family and a few years later, reverted back to drugs and got into Crack and Heroin. She died of an overdose shortly after that. We heard Douchey ended up in the State Penn for armed robbery or something like that and never saw or heard about him after that.
So, we had a very eventful summer that year and when we started back at school for our Senior year, our antics were widely known. It also turns out, there were many kids in the school that had similar type issues with new "stepfathers" and boyfriends of their mothers. We helped where we could but you can't fix the problems of the world. I stepped over the line once and spent my first night in jail and the only thing that saved me was I was still 17 and the 2 guys I was in a physical altercation with were in their 30's. My parents were pissed and I got "grounded for life" (again lol). Once I got ungrounded (this happened when I drove my mother insane from me being around all the time lol), my father explained the theory of "Stealth" to me and how things are only against the law if you get caught so you always want to make sure you never get caught lol.

In fact I guarantee you that the kids also want time away from the adults so they could play with their cousins because that is what kids do. If you say, “Well actually, teacher, there ARE birds that eat other birds.” In a nasally self satisfied tone, and then sit back in ur chair and smirk, that is insubordination. However, if you raise you hand, and then say, “well teacher, my uncle has a falcon that he uses to eat other birds at the airport.” In a nice tone, and not in a way that indicates you think you are better, teachers tend to take it more in stride.

I have mixed experience with this. In the Czech Republic, the older generations (mainly women, but they're the majority in elementary schools) are like this, they don't like noise in class, if the kid point a mistake they scold the kid, especially in elementary school, younger generations are more relaxed, they allow drinking in class, going to the toilet. In high school (I was going on engineering) some teachers even told us to correct them, but still, you'll find some that are let's say uncomfortable with it (also in my high school we had more male teachers). At the university where I'm now, I would be surprised if the professor reacted like this. From my experience, women are angry when kid points a mistake than men. But to the defence of older generations, they were raised during socialism which encouraged authority and stepping out of line was considered rebelling.
Edit: I've never heard of a kid having big problems only for pointing mistakes, usually it's for disturbing in class which is punishable by write up, many write-ups and your mark of behaviour will drop or you could be expelled.

For the story about the sisters, OP’s feelings are totally reasonable, but some people are just like this when it comes to their kids, especially not knowing their spouse situation, etc. When I want to hang out with a friend who has kids who money may be tight for, I’ve sometimes offered to pay for a babysitter. Lots of schools would rather teach mindless obedience over fundamental learning. It happens to me everyday.
When I was in third grade, I found another way to do the math problems that took a much shorter time and was easy to apply to most anything.
The teacher not only called me out on my 'mistake,' but then she constantly berated me on it for the entirety of the year.
    She also:
    - Kept me away from other kids
    - Painted my desk black as opposed to the typical white/brown ones to signal how bad I was
    - Didn't teach me anything at all, only plopping workbooks and assignments on me at the end of the day.
I never really talked about it, but I did find it really weird how she acted totally nice and normal in parent-teacher meetings. I spoke up about it in some of them the first few times (even showed the desk), but then she shot me down in front of my parents. They didn't really believe me, but instead brushed it off as me 'probably doing something wrong again.' My little head was so offended at that, because I was an A+ student and I didn't ever cause any sort of trouble at home OR school.
She didn't even bother helping me out at all when I was struggling. She treated me like absolute shit for the entire year. Her defense was: "If Mack is such a genius, then she doesn't need my help."

After all, the most important thing to teach children about knowledge is to always believe anything that anyone who happens to be in a position of authority tells you: If Big Teacher tells you that 2+2=5, questioning it is double-plus ungood.

If it was the first time I'd totally sign that, but unfortunately I've grown too used to our cats getting stolen. Yeah, it's not a good thing growing numb to that. But if you had neighbors steal a pregnant cat, later bring back the mother and most kittens and urge you to sign a stupid paper saying you'll take them back bc neighbors only wanted one kitten (as if that would work, cats know where they get the best food and will go there), and some other similarly stupid stories, then someone just taking your cat because it looks nice doesn't seem like that big of a deal anymore.
It still sucks, but we learned the hard way that especially cats with nice colours were not going to be around very long, which goes double if you spent a lot of time with them and made them trust hoomans.

The one about the kid correcting the teacher I can so relate to. My oldest corrected her first grade teacher about Columbus. The teacher not only demanded her to go to the principal’s office, but further demanded that she be suspended. When I fought back, my daughter didn’t get suspended but we spent the next month fighting for fair treatment. The teacher was caught encouraging girls in the class to bully my daughter. Her glasses were broken 6 times in 6 weeks. When the school wouldn’t do anything to alleviate the problem, I removed both of my children not only from the school but from the district. We later found evidence that the group of bullies had broken nearly every one of her ribs, and bruised some of her internal organs. It took me years, but I finally got that teacher canned. She’s also been black listed and can’t teach in California ever again. This was but one example of this school’s incompetence.

For the cat story, OP is not in any way, shape or form TA, the mother owes OP a huge apology for allowing the low-key psychological abuse to go on for so long, and the stepfather can sod off into the sun. If OP's mother cares more about her own birthday than OP's (resurfaced, raw) feelings, she's just not a very comforting or understanding mother.
