    I am learning so much (I have much to learn, granted)!! made my first ever candle yesterday which I already can tell has a lot of issues (small crack around the wick, and smells way too strong - I did 10% fragrance, that's what the kit assumed). Will leave it to cure for at least a week (it's soy), probably two before lighting it. But I'm already thinking about different wax (I've got my eye on a blend of rapeseed and coconut, once it's available again as a sample size) , different wicks, different jars, different fragrances (I couldn't resist purchasing a few more - it's really hard to tell what I'm going to like, the description is not always accurate!) - I'm definitely going to refer back to that video - it's invaluable, thanks!!

    My two favorite candle men in one video! You two are so great as a team fielding questions for newbies! Your both so kind to do so!
    I'd like to say one thing and everyone can bite my head off...... I can't wait for Covid-19 to be over for this reason. Ordinary people will go back to their old jobs and old lives. Maybe the people who have made candles for years can get their supplies!!! Sorry, I'm not a bitch. I just hate the supply chain right now and it's because people starting out now may not be dedicated to the craft! I ordered 5 candles from 5 different newcomers and all but 1 were awful. No hot throw, over wicked, under wicked, you name it, I bought it! I did this as an experiment to see how the MN area was doing. I paid an average of 15$ per candle for a 10 ounce candle. Like I said 1 out of 5 passed the test. This isn't good for the hand-made market. It means people are rushing to market not properly testing and flooding the market with inferior product. It scares people into believing that hand-crafted candles are inferior! So bite my head off! This is an issue!
    Guys this was an awesome Q&A, I had an awesome time listening to you both! I'm hoping that everyone who asked a question takes your sound advice, and follows through! You all need to do this with several other CZcams makers!
    Jill Gross

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Jill for the kind comments. And I definitely hear what you're saying about supply chain issues. One thing to note though.... the issues haven't been just a result of several new candle makers entering the industry. Manufacturing, shipping and logistics were destroyed by the pandemic and has really caused a lot of supply issues. Hopefully this resolved itself soon!

    • @waynegross2113
      @waynegross2113 Před 3 lety +1

      @@BlackTieBarnI think I need to clarify a bit. I love seeing new people get in because it keeps makers like me, who frankly have been in a long while, a reason to step it up a notch and stay relevant. However, I can say it does bother me when they are rushing to launch before taking a hard look at issues they have with their own product.
      The whole supply chain matter, is effecting everyone across the board evenly. If I can't get it, you can't get it, and Jeff can't get it, it's pretty much mute. I sell in a very nice local pharmacy, family owned and they called me three days after Christmas and wanted me to restock after everything from Christmas sold out! This is a pretty lucrative part of my sales. I had to meet with the owner and explain why I couldn't fulfill his request. I as so embarrassed at first! Yikes! He was very understanding. We'll work through it as supply increases
      I was going to launch online this year? Don't know now. In 10 years I haven't needed online. I've been quite successful without it. But the world is an ever changing beast, lol! Thanks for listening!

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  Před 3 lety +1

      Absolutely agree with everything you said! There is definitely plenty enough business to go around. If I was too worried about competition... I'd never had started a CZcams channel. 😆🤣
      I also agree new candle makers shouldn't rush to launch our stay a business. I actually talk about this a lot throughout some of my videos. There are a lot of reasons why, but regardless.... its good not to rush. And yes... the supply issues have been a struggle. If I were you, and it sounds like you are already running a good gig.... id probably continue working towards online to be prepared. And then be ready to turn the switch when or I'd you decide to. :)

    @truthreignsfacts4997 Před 3 lety +2

    Thank you guys! You mentioned that you do 1 test about one week out and another about 2 weeks out from time to time.
    How do yo standardize that? In that amount of time, several variables can happen. ie. Humidity, temperature, being able even to judge hot throw a week later. Fragrance strength can be very subjective, so curious how you address those variables.

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  Před 3 lety +2

      It's tough to do. If going to get super serious about it, you would want to have a specific testing room or area. You are right, it's very subjective. But for users using soy a lot, then smell little to nothing early on. Abd then a week or two later they can actually smell something. So for them, it's less about the increase in HT as it is about the existence of HT. I mostly test again a couple weeks out to make sure wicking hasn't changed dramatically. All the factors you mentioned can have tiny effect, but it shouldn't change wicking considerably

    I have to say I am newly subscribed to you, but I’m thoroughly enjoying your content! I have not fully got into candle making, as I have just been making wax melts for a few years. I think I commented on another video of yours but what is a good starting 8-9 oz jar/wick blend for 6006? And then perhaps a good 8-9 oz jar/wick blend for the joy wax or problend 600? I’d love a starting point for those 2 waxes with the 9 oz straight sided jars. 😇

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey again, I responded to your other about the jars. For those jars using 6006 I prefer htps anywhere from 73-104 (just depends on the FO). For joy wax/ProBlend 600 I like Premier 725, 735, 745, as well as htp 52 and 62. Occasionaly I have to mix in other sizes depending on the density of the FO. But those are good starting points. Also, zincs work decently in both waxes in that jar size as well. :)

    You are best candle making teachers. I love your videos, which are fun and informative. I am testing a recipe for my Christmas candle . The recipe needs Nutmeg oil, however here in Australia it is no longer available. I can get nutmeg essential oil though. I use ECO CB Advance wax. I understand essential oils are not suited to candles. If I use only 10% essential oil & 90% fragrance oil will i get good hot throw. For beginners can you explain acronyms like HTP

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  Před 2 lety +1

      It's not really an acronym. There are acronyms like FO (fragrance oil), HT (hot throw), CT (cold throw). But in this case....It's just the name of the type of wick. It's called an htp wick. Like an LX wick or an ECO wick.
      I think technically htp might mean high tension paper but it's never referred to that way. It's just the name of the wick.

      Hey Lisa, Sorry, just saw this. I occasionally missed one here and there. Especially as the comments increase.
      Contact bford@clarrussp if to ask about the waxes he would recommend. They aren't a normal supplier like a candle science or something. They are a manufacturer and work direct to consumer. So, their website is designed more to be more for techincal and manufacturing info for wholesalers, etc. So, start with an email to Brad Ford and he can point you in the right direction

      There are tons of places. Check out my top favorite wax list I did a few months back. It shows the names, etc. But some common choices are candle science, flaming candle, Midwest fragrance company, porter candle supply, sozp essentials

    Guys, I am desperate for your help. I am getting discouraged. I am using wooden wicks, in a metal vessel. It doesn't matter if I use 2 side by each or one thicker one, they do not burn past 5-8 mins. I have also used 2 wicks together & they fold away from each other.....Help please!!!

      @@jacquiericard5190 definitely sounds like a recipe problem. Too much FO, high melt point wax, but mostly likely just too small of wicks. Can you share more about the materials you are using?

      @@BlackTieBarn I pour between 156-170F. I have even soaked my wicks in carrier oil for 2 days & put my containers in oven very low temp so they are not cold when i pour. I have a metal tin 8oz from Delitout, Quebec. My wooden wick is 5" & .05" wide. Valys is the name. I uses GW464 Soy.

      @@jacquiericard5190 ahhh.. wooden wicks. they are finikiy and inconsistent. You might not be doing much wrong. But, ive never heard of that wooden wick before. But you are using 464 soy so you will want a booster wick for sure. It needs hotter burn. Sounds like the wick you are using isn't enough. Also, you dont need to soak in carrier oil (if quality wood wicks). And the pour temp/cold containers things are you are doing are also not necessary. That wont affect the wicking anyway.
