Thank you for your videos these have helped me so much. I made candles for years then got out of it for several years and now back in and the waxes now are a lot different and I’ve been struggling with the sink holes . This has helped me allot !

Can I get an answer for this question, I'm using Bw-910 Paraffin/Soy Wax and was wondering if you could give some insights on what Size wick from the 700 Series for jars of 3"inch diameter? I use 8% fragrance oil in my candles.
@@declanosbourne62 Hi Declan, this is a tough one sir. I dont really use that wax so I'm not sure as I woul;d be completely guessing. But... the other issue is that B910 is a pillar wax and might be a little firm for container candles. Of course it can work, it just means I am not real sure what wick would be best with that wax being a harder wax with a higher melt point. You might be better off double wicking that sucker if you haven't tried yet. Maybe a couple P720s for example? That is just a guess again since I dont use that wax. Perhaps someone else can offer some insight. If wanting to stick with single wicking... I would start at probably P767 and then adjust up and down as needed. Again... just guessing though. :/ Sorry not much help on this one.

HT! HT is my biggest nemesis. I do not have issues with sinkholes, jar adhesion, mushrooming, deep meltpools, none of that but HT is always minimal. I've sourced scents all the way from Candle Science to 16/17 sigh
Scent is part of it. Wax is a large part as well. And then. Of course vessel size and wicking. But yah... it can be painstaking right? 🤣
👏🏼🙌🏼 You’re the Best Wade!! Any tips on creating a tool / pattern for wick placement and centering. Drawing a circle and measuring a 3 wick is a little tricky lol I kind of got it but don’t want my melt pool to be off centered. Any advice?

Great video!! Although I don't know why people get so weird about wet spots, its just what wax does, its not a problem... I've never bought a candle in my life because of how it adheres or not to the glass... It's just normal.
Worrying about it just takes time away from concentrating on making candles.

Hi I’m new to candle making I have not made a candle yet I am waiting for a candle kit hearing you talk about pouring the wax to hot or pouring the wax to cool reminds me of yeast when you’re making bread it can’t be too hot because you’ll kill the yeast and it can’t be too cool because it won’t proof properly that’s what it remind me of another question how did you come up with your company name black-tie barn and as I listen to your video I’m getting all kinds of ideas going through my mind while you’re talking so I can’t wait to make my first candle. What wick(s) would you recommend for IGI 6006 para/soy blend?
I’ve been looking into this but there are so many wicks in this industry!
I've been using 6006 for a few years now. My go to is HTP, followed by Zinc and The Premier 700 wicks.
I agree with Lara who also commented. I use mostly htp and then premier 700 and zincs are split. It depends on the jar size of course as well. I have a video or two making 6006 candles where I discuss my process. Also have a whole detailed video on wicks. Will link below. Hope it helps!

I have an issue that puzzles me. I am experimenting with 2 fragrance types, using the same container, wax, wick and fragrance dosage level. The fragrance with the higher flash point, consistently has a higher flame than the fragrance with the lower FP. The FP’s are well within the acceptable range for candle making! The flash points are correct because I designed the fragrances myself and have documentation stating the FP’s. From my research a flame shouldn’t exceed 1”-1.25”. Would you be able to provide any information as to why this would happen?
That's a tough one and I can only speculate.
Oils with higher FPs are usually... usually denser heavier oils. That could cause them to cause a different response eith the wick while burning. Are you using the same wick with all your oils? If so, that would definitely cause this. All oils are different and each should be tested as a new candle. I have several different wicks used in the same jar and with same wax with only the FO being different. It's a major part of the overall blend and recipe. So changes (different FOs) can often need different wicking for sure. But if that is not the case... I'm not sure, that's a good question. Lol
@@BlackTieBarn Thanks Wade for your reply! I have been following your recommendations using 2-3 different wicks that would be appropriate for the particular wax. The fragrance in question does have a higher crystal content, but that should have the opposite effect concerning the height of the flame. Crystals and a family of ingredients called aldehydes can cause issues with wick migration. I am using your recommendations based on the excellent video you did on wicks. I am a Perfumer who has created fragrances for over 30 years, and this is certainly a learning curve from the other side of the industry.

If you are using a wax that is susceptible to sink holes which is many of them... I poke relief holes through all of them. Many manufacturers do this even on a large scale

Testing my first candle right now (should have left it to cure a bit longer but I could not resist! I made it 4 days ago..) So far I've got sinkholes, and well on my way to tunneling... On the other hand burning it "fixed" the too strong smell - there is barely any hot throw... not quite a success yet I would say! - small edit - it actually got much better after the 2 hours mark! there is definitely hot throw (I realised that after I opened the window to feed a squirrel) and the wax on the side is now catching up...

What would you say bout mushrooms in candles? I tend to get mushrooms on my wicks. I doesn't seem to matter what type or size wick I use. I read somewhere that mushrooms are acceptable in candles as long as they do not reach 3mm wide. What would you suggest to eliminate this problem, if it is at all possible to. I'm experimenting with IGI 6006 in a 9 oz straight jar. I tried HTP, Eco, and CD wicks of different sizes. They all cause mushrooms in my candles.
It's nearly impossible to prevent any snd all mushrooms. Just limit them as you can. If you aren't getting bad ones in a normal burn time frame I wouldn't worry about it too much. Certain waxes and wicks are worse than others. The harder a wax is to burn and consume the more mushrooming generally

It depends on the wax type so go really answer. It wildly varies

Hey Chyrisse! Depends on jar. But I most prefer htp, premier 700 or zinc wicks for 6006. Let me link my detailed "All About Wicks" video below. I am very new to candle making. I stared with soy, had no hot throw... at all. So I was like this is amazingly hard so I watched some CZcams videos and decided paraffin wax was what I needed. It worked awesome. Fills two large rooms in my home. However get sink holes and like a bubble around my wicks. Also I tried coloring the wax. I used mica cause I thought what gorgeous colors. well it all went the bottom and my top looked like wax with glitter. I used my liquid color and if i added correct drops it would be just barely colored and to much would end up in the bottom of the picture. Ughhhh Im so frustrated. do you have advice for a great candle dye? Should i warm my jars and foil them up to prevent the sink holes and the weird bubble that forms around my wick some times. I agree with a lot of what you said about hot throw. It is far easier to get it with paraffin and parasoy blends.
Sink holes, dips are all normal. Just part of the process to consider in your workflow. Bubbles usually can be fixed by different pour temps. Unless you are talking about those white/colored bubbles on the top of your paraffin candles. This is normal, especially for mottling paraffin wax. Its just a characteristic of the wax. You can smooth them with a heat gun if you prefer.
As far as candle dye. Well, paraffin needs less dye than soy. Its less dense and holds color better. If you are adding too much it might be settling at the bottom. Try adding color first at the hottest temp (i usually add color between 190 and 200. Blend very well.
Candle science and lobster carries quality candle dyes. I use liquid dyes because it's more easy to work with so you don't add to much or to little. 5-7 drops per pound will give a nice color in Paraffin wax. Soy Wax will give a lighter shade if you use the method I mentioned but you can get Bright shade if you add more dye but be careful not to add to much.
@@BlackTieBarn I used to add dye just at 185° but I realized I got in trouble with the temp drops lower before I put my fragrance so I started experimenting and add dye at the temp you suggested and it work pretty fine. I need to find that pouring temp sweet spot for my ParaSoy blend and stick to it.

I'm having an issue consistently centering some of my wooden wicks. I know this is critical because it can affect my candle performance if not centered. Any suggestions?
Hey Cynthia! Wood wicks are tougher sometimes because there aren't little tools to help you center without making some type of template. My advice would be to make a template for your jar. My an is to make some for people when I get a chance.

What about yellowing after burning?
It can happen for couple reasons. If the FO has vanilla, or certain dyes if colored, overworked, wood wicks, property of the FO, and some waxes do it more than others. Can be lots of things
After making a candle what is the cause of cracking from wick to sides is it the temp of glass before pouring?
Yah it's mostly wax type and pour temp. You want the wax to cool slowly. So try pouring a tad hotter, cover/insulate the area around your jars, and slow down the cooling process. :)

@@BlackTieBarn I've been thinking if you fill glasses with uncontaminated wax i.e. No frag or wicks after it has cured can you re-melt and use again ? This would save wax and I could perfect the wax side of it first with no waste. Then I could introduce frag and wicks and then concentrate on the burning.
No harm in doing that. :)
How do warm up your jars
Geat gun on low or even just in the oven on lowest setting for 10 minutes
Is it easy to make candle business?
I wouldn't say easy, no. I don't think any business is easy. But it's enjoyable and you get the hang of it. :)

Finally burns down completely using all wax.

Plenty of demand and business out there. Just grow slow and steady. :)

@@mariebk1 I would tend to agree with that. Most dont share everything but sometimes it is for good reason. Yes, occasionally it is to not reveal secrets which I do understand a bit if they need to protect their own business. But, honestly.... most simply don't cover every detail or secret because it just isn't possible in a single video. If I could.. i would sit down and talk for hours every video. But that wouldn't not be received well. Lol. I already have videos that are quite long, ha!. But I do share so much stuff in my videos. I think it is one of the reasons people enjoy the channel. I have frosting in my paraffin wax
In paraffin, it wouldn't be frosting.. it would be either mottling (normal and intentional with many kinds or paraffin) or jump lines. Pour hotter to fix those.
@@BlackTieBarn on all the videos ive seen it looks like frosting or like miff on it. I Should add im using silicon molds and adding dye to wax. I think it has something to do with the temperatures. But im still learning. Do you have a example of mottling? Thank you 😁
Why is my candle smells like burn fire while burning?
most likely wrong wick type or overwicked. Could be the oil or wax though too
