Hi Wade, you have nailed it!!!! I have been doing craft shows and Festivals for 30 plus years. Setting up your booth in a U shape ( known years ago as Horseshoe) in so customer's can shop is true...I started the Horseshoe out and months later did Horseshoe in and sold way more products, also if outside they can come into the shade of your canopy. Also people want to touch the product so having several on display is better than one of each, cause you want your traffic to moving not be at a stand still waiting for other people to leave so they can buy what they want or ask any questions. Love your display, never thought of having my brand on my table cloths will definitely to that for next year. You're right about the bundling too ( buy 3 get 1 free) they just don't like it, they LOVE it. Works great on my soaps and melts too! I'm still testing my candles hope to have you test them sometime! Thanks.......lab.
I’m so happy you spent a good amount of time discussing this… one thing I cannot stand is walking into a store and someone hounding me and asking me if I need help every two seconds or speaking to me while I’m trying to shop (im talking to you Sephora! Your employees are ANNOYING!) A nice greeting or quick hello at the door is ok but any more than that is annoying to me. So I agree 100% with what you said regarding letting people shop and do their thing and then speaking to them. The setup is also important when it comes to that and everything you said on that is I 100% agree with. You covered a lot of important things that I don’t think many would think of. Love the setup and the shelving is awesome
I know this is a long one... but I had a lot of info to include. Ill talk about some general experience and tips then dive into more specific ones. Some new products and other footage included as well. Thank you all for being here. I included a few links to materials that are helpful to get for shows in the description. Talk to you soon!
Hi Wade, Great video! I'm doing my first show in May and this was a huge help. I had questions and you answered them. Thanks for all the wonderful advice!
What do you do when you want to continue learning and you have seen all your videos? Watch them again!! I’ve been watching your videos for over a year now and always gain more knowledge every time I watch one. Even again 😂
Ha. Thanks Mitch. You guys are gonna be fine. I'm just glad to see Chiefs starting to click after all the new pieces and players coming back from injury. Might be scary if offense gets back on track which should just be a matter of time
I agree about the U shape booth space. I always try to create an environment that makes people want to come in to shop. I do stand most of the time, but I usually greet and say I’m there if they have questions.
AWESOME video!!! I wish I had a video like this to watch some years ago when I first started selling soap! This was extremely helpful ~ ESPECIALLY the part where you talked about doing a special promotion and the way you explained & broke it all down. You explained it in a way that was easy (for me) to understand. I’m not busy savvy (yet) and this was really helpful for me! Thanks Wade! 🙌🏼
By far the best craft show video I’ve seen. I have been a seller at craft shows for 4 years but always look for new ways to improve my booth. Your advice was excellent.
Glad I watched your video! I am new to candle making and events this year - I found confirmation in the things I am already doing and good ideas to incorporate for future shows. Thank you!
A tip I learned years ago get a tote or two and keep your show stuff in it I.E table cloths, stands, Business cards, etc. and leave that stuff in the tote it's less stuff you have to remember the night before and when you get to the show you find out you for got.
I agree with you about the interaction in shows. I HATE it when sellers jump on me as soon as I approach and will just turn around and leave. This is also why I never even go to Lush anymore. I want to be able to look around without being forced to buy.
I just went to my VERY FIRST craft show on small business Saturday:) very, very motivating. Thank you for your generous information you’ve been giving aspiring candle makers :))
Lol, yes... I do at times don't I? Most crafts and business for that matter... is a world of uncertainty, so I TRY to not claim everything as a certain fact or only one right or wrong. :) But thank you very much for the kind words and your opinion.... of my opinions. :)
Ooh I have an idea why people buy from the shelves. It means they can look and not feel pressured to purchase. When you make your way to the table (they expect you to be behind it- even though you say you don’t stand there but off to the side) and they feel exposed. Classic psychology. But thank you for the tip because I hadn’t thought of setting mine up with selves before. P.s find your videos super helpful. Thank you from Australia. 👍😉🌺🇦🇺🌸🥰. And I wrote this before you said you would walk to another booth if the set up was different. I am exactly the same hence why I stand by the quote above. People don’t like the table for that reason.
Okay. I’m back To comment again. I completely agree with the setup of the booth. At my farmers market, that’s how I do it. I’m the only one at my market that does it, but it really allows customers to browse. Also, that’s such smart advice about the inventory portion of your video. I might have to try that. I have so much listed in my square that at the market, I have to scroll thru each product to find what I need. Maybe I’ll give this way a shot! It does take a ton of time looking for each product. Thanks so much!
Hi Wade. It’s all good…and it’s NOT procrastination, haha. “I wanna say it’s procrastination but is it if I’m always busy?” Maybe you’re like me and are always sure you have more time than you actually do! I’m the queen of last minute prep…even when I’ve had months of planning with lists that reference other lists. I’m that person who’s always one to three minutes late, blowing in like a tornado, then panting as I blow my hair out of my face and say “Well let’s go, what’re you all waiting for, c’mon!” 😂 I’ve gone so far as to make my firstborn (of three) promise me she will stall everyone at my own funeral; hide my body or lock the clergy in the coat closet…whatever it takes. Because if everything starts on time and runs smoothly, mourners and celebrators alike will be peeking in my final resting place just to make sure it’s me! (Please understand that I’ve been a Nurse for many years before my interest in making candles…so I have an offbeat sense of humor.) I enjoy all your videos and am learning so much! Thanks for all your hard work.
I'm still watching through this but you gave great advice around the 6 minute mark you said to not get too excited or discouraged at a show but to let the whole show play out and evaluate afterwards. I really need to learn to do this. One show I didn't do good within the first 30 minutes and was totally convinced the show was a bust and then it turned out to be my best show to date.
Thanks so much for this video. It was so informative. I have yet to do a vendor event and the information was invaluable! Thank you for breaking down how the promotions work. Such great advice!!
I take inventory as I am packing up after the show. For those who like pen and paper, rather than an app, (me😊) use a spreadsheet to keep up with inventory - Excel, hand written, typed...
@@BlackTieBarn Hi Wade , I’m doing my first vendor fair, what’s a good way to promote to attract customers? Thank you for your generous information 💓
The way you describe how to set up the booth and customer service is the exact OPPOSITE way that I was taught at my last job. I hated it and I am sure the customers hated it. Push push push, funnel, confront, suggest. We tracked our add-ons in sales and I was consistently one of the highest ($ per hour worked). I could not convince my boss and their boss to just BACK OFF of people, they come in to browse and may have a rough idea of what they wanted. Just give a little nudge but mainly leave people alone. Well, that is corporate retail I guess, they operate based on reports and percentages.
Love your display and the functionality of it. I did a pop-up launch event to get myself going…Scary but I will continue to step out there. Like you, time is an issue for me (prepping/planning with my career.
What a great video! I’m just started in candle-making. I’m in Ireland. Had big big problems with C-3 and 464 with hot throw, which left me crying (as Christmas is coming) but your videos saved me! I’m doing test candles tonight with C-3 and 464 and Vybar, if this doesn’t work I’m ditching the 100% soy hippy life 😅😂 and going across to the dark side! Thanks for your great videos and information! ❤🎉
Wade, I’m in Kansas City and I would have loved to come out and meet you had a known there was a show. Nevertheless, I appreciate your videos and your plethora of information. I’m still trying to create a quality candle to get my business launched, and your videos are really helpful. 😊
Thanks so much. Yeah I was so inundated and busy I didn't really do any videos or announcements leading up to the show. It was just a crazy few weeks for me. But... I guess they all are. 🤣
I really enjoy all of your videos- You’re very easy going. For a new candle maker it means a lot to be able to understand all that it’s to know about the candle business. CAN YOU BE MY MENTOR?? LOL
Hi Wade. Thanks for another valuable video. You got me reevaluating how to set my tables inside my tent. I like the retail store feel idea! I’ll let you know how it goes!
Good perspective on the boutique and how many products on a table. I felt like it took me time to find the product in my bins as it was my first show and I was nervous and unorganized 😆 although i package the candles either in paper or product boxes so I don't know how to handle that the best way... 🤷♀️ They don't have lids so I can't stack them, but I can see how that was a hold up. I only have a 6ft table so that clogged the space in itself when it got busy. I have 4 oz candles for $14 or 2 for $25 and the promo sale got half my sales for the weekend!!! Definitely recommend special promos
Also I didn't realize how much time I needed and didn't take a good enough inventory.. so I tried listing in the costs versus the items but then I couldn't accurately account for what I sold. 2nd time I did it by item specifics and I can say it took a lot longer but I felt I had a double check system in place... all trial and error I suppose! But it was definitely my bad for not being as prepared as I should have been!!! This time I'm going to do so much better 🤣 thanks for the awesome tips!
@@BlackTieBarn I took your advice and went back to the simple checkout process and added the ones that had product boxes on my table and it made it SO much easier!
Thank you for sharing your insights to shows. I am just getting started and want to do some shows this summer and have a booth at an inside flea market. I don’t know how much inventory I should aim for to get the booth started and an online Shopify. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I am learning so much from your videos. And your set up looked great. I agree with having the Are for customers to come in and look around and not just shuffle by.
Hard to rally answer as it will depend and differ for everyone. It'd rather have more than enough though. Running out sucks. I'd take like 20 or each scent
Hi Wade! Can I ask what you place your wax melts in for the show. It looked so clean!!! Thanks for all of your videos. I’m just starting out and I’ve learned so much from your videos.
Good question.... I could have discussed that for sure. This space is a bit tricky. They have an elevator so you can use a cart or dolly. But its also busy and I'm inpatient and just made 30 trips back and forth! Lol. Plus the event has some helpers which is nice.:
This really helped me a lot, because I’m doing a pop up shop next year! If it’s not to much trouble do you think you can do a video on how to use craftybase and how you do your inventory?
Thank you for the inspiring video! I’m intending to have pop ups at the later part of this year. Wondering if you could share the checklist of what to bring for the show! I’m excited and worried about how it will turn out but you have motivated me to enjoy the process! Tq!
Hi Wade, when do you start to make your fall / winter candles? Also, how do you handle the heat and candles sweating with outdoor markets in the summer? Any tips 😩
Waaaoooo!!!! What a beautiful presentation! What type of color do you use that your candles look that beautiful and bright and where do you get it from? And like i always said..... You are the best. Thank you for your video.
In the UK most events will only allow a 6x2ft table. Plus they usually charge high fees. Most are a waste of time and money, often the only one making money is the event organiser.
Love your videos. I’m doing my first pop up in another month. I do have a question, should I lower my prices when doing a pop up? Or should I just keep them the same price as my website? Thank you for taking the time out to read and answer
It’s me again 😂 so my first pop up is Oct 16.. I’m still in testing phase but I’ve got a month to this day. I’ve taken notes from alllll your other videos n it looks like in this video you have 4 candles of each scent appx.. I do work full time and make candles when I get home. Based on previous videos you’ve suggested 6-8 scents to start as a beginner. It’s fall so I’m not tryna offer springy stufff.. how much inventory do you suggest? Also where do you suggest I get my dyes from?? The natural look is rather blah across the board 😬
Great video. May I ask do you apply your labels by hand that you get from stickermule? or do you use a label applicator? If so what make and model do you use?
Hey! Thank you for the video, it was amazing. I do have a question about the shows, how do you feel about having a tip jar there? Do customers often want to leave you a tip because of your customer service skills?
I learned a lot from this video. Thank you wade. As always. You've been a big help. Where do you normally do popups/ shows may I ask. I've been considering when to do my first; but I'm not sure where to start. Craft shows, the mall, farmers markets? I've only sold in person so far and I'm working on a website soon with Shopify and even have yet to buy my first POS for card. We've come a long way and I think I might document my journey on CZcams as I figure it out as well.
@@BlackTieBarn Okay, thank you. I've mostly sold at my day job, but also have made a habit of keeping a backpack on me, with candles, a receipt book (just in case), business wallet (always limited cash of about $20 in $1's or $1's and $5's with a change despensor, and an inventory sheet. I'll have the website up as soon as I can. For now I just provide a business Gmail. ...I was not as prepared as I thought I was. I didn't print out (or have them printed) any flyers or anything 😥. So far I've sold 19 candles in 2 weeks though.. so I'm proud of myself for that and couldn't be more thankful of or appreciate my customers more. There's been a ton of support and it's just amazing.
I really didn't buy them for this purpose...I'll have to look back at where I bought them. But yes fairly light so easy to transport. I always use an enclosed trailer for shows
Great video. Where do you buy your vessels? Also im just starting my first pop up market. How much stock would you recommend bringing in a 7 hour time period? Im thinking better be prepared than not. I think we have 72 made.
This was a great video, thank you so much. I am loving the shelve idea. What type of shelves would I be looking for? Are they already made or do you assemble them at the show? Thanks.

@@rachaelg.4804 Awesome. So glad it worked out for you! :)
Great video!! I still waiting for your recipes on how to color candles 😊
🥰👍 Thanks!
Excellent video. This is definitely a master class
Thanks so much. Happy you enjoyed it!
I would be interested in knowing how you get your product and set up from your car to the show space. Loved this video. good information.
Good question.... I could have discussed that for sure. This space is a bit tricky. They have an elevator so you can use a cart or dolly. But its also busy and I'm inpatient and just made 30 trips back and forth! Lol. Plus the event has some helpers which is nice.:
This was very helpful. Thank you
You're welcome!
This really helped me a lot, because I’m doing a pop up shop next year! If it’s not to much trouble do you think you can do a video on how to use craftybase and how you do your inventory?
Absolutely and definitely planned! :) but I do have se craftybase videos already if you haven't checked them out. :)
Love the tips!..it all makes sense
Love ❤️ your set up hi!!! Do you prefer wax or wooden wicks for the candles?
Thank you for the inspiring video! I’m intending to have pop ups at the later part of this year. Wondering if you could share the checklist of what to bring for the show! I’m excited and worried about how it will turn out but you have motivated me to enjoy the process! Tq!
Ahh great idea.... I'll work on that
Great video! Lots of good info - thank you!
Thanks! You're welcome!
Hi Wade, when do you start to make your fall / winter candles?
Also, how do you handle the heat and candles sweating with outdoor markets in the summer? Any tips 😩
Sounds great!!!
:)
Waaaoooo!!!! What a beautiful presentation! What type of color do you use that your candles look that beautiful and bright and where do you get it from? And like i always said..... You are the best. Thank you for your video.
Thanks Marisol. I use colors mostly from candle science and natures garden. Thanks so much for the kind comments! 🥰
SO good!!
Thanks Lisa 😄
Ugh..the inventory. I always have to go and change my inventory on Etsy after a show ..I seriously hate it. Thank you for the tips!
Yes! Exactly! :)
Really great video! Do you mind sharing where you got your table cloths personalized with your business name?
I love the look of your table covers if you feel comfortable would you mind sharing where you bought them from?
Sure tablecoversnow.com
In the UK most events will only allow a 6x2ft table. Plus they usually charge high fees. Most are a waste of time and money, often the only one making money is the event organiser.
There are definitely events not worth doing for sure. But many can be very good as well. :)
I did a flea market for 12 years, I make dessert candles. I also has classic music playing.
Awesome Susan! Thanks for sharing!
Love your videos. I’m doing my first pop up in another month. I do have a question, should I lower my prices when doing a pop up? Or should I just keep them the same price as my website? Thank you for taking the time out to read and answer
Stay tuned. Covering this on next q&a video!
I don't by hand currently
Hey! Thank you for the video, it was amazing. I do have a question about the shows, how do you feel about having a tip jar there? Do customers often want to leave you a tip because of your customer service skills?
I don't have a tip jar but most people pay with card anyway and the payment system allows tips (shopify, square, etc)
Any of those are good. Early on, I like to do what I can for practice and exposure
@@thedoubleboiler6971 Thats great. What a way to start. I don't see you having any problems in the future with your passion and hard work.
@@BlackTieBarn Thank you so much! That actually means a lot to me and it is very reassuring.
Very helpful video. I'd love to know where you got the vertical shelf you used for your display? Is it easy to transport? Thx so much 🙏🏼🕯️
I really didn't buy them for this purpose...I'll have to look back at where I bought them.
Thanks.
Honestly I am not sure yet. Still thinking about that myself. I like the ones I took this time though. Preassembled but looked nice
