- This is literally every scrap of footage that I could find on the internet. I've restored these shots to the best of my abilities (within reason). Let me know if I've missed anything and/or what you think should've stayed in the film.
I made a mistake in the video. The unknown VFX reel was uploaded by @wicket3695 not wicket 396. The video is titled "Starwars Revenge of the sith Extended and Deleted Vfx shots."
@Pastrybfs suggested using the 35mm scans of the trailers in order to get higher resolution footage. So, I've re-reconstructed those shots and you can find them at the link below.

It’s funny how almost all of these scenes are legitimately what happens during the runtime, but just didn’t make it to the final cut.

@@olabolob Most of them really shouldn't have been though. It's a very rushed film, in terms of pacing.
That's my problem with movies, especially live action for that matter. It's such a limiting and restrictive medium. It's why I prefer books, animation shows, comics, and video games over movies. No exception with Star Wars where i prefer the EU over the films.
That’s how editing works. You cut off a few frames here and there to get the pacing and flow of a scene just right. That happens in every movie.
The political scenes should have never been cut, but I think George Lucas didn't want a repeat of Attack of the Clones. The political intrigue is important to the overall story and makes it seem like more people were trying to stop Palpatine beyond just the Jedi.
I agree, but I think it makes the movie so much better. It isolates Anakin and shows how he went to trust Palpatine to a point he barely has a proper critical mindset anymore.
And moreover, making Padmé the initial creator of the rebellion made her character that much more impactful when she didn't do much in the final cut
See, the lack of those scenes is why I've always felt that RoTS was never truly as good as people lauded it as. Don't get me wrong - I love the movie - but I never felt it was THAT much better than Attack of the Clones. Both movies - the whole trilogy actually - suffered from a surplus of excellent ideas that all tied together really well. Sortof the opposite of the Sequel Trilogy's problem (not enough connected threads to feel coherent and planned out).
It makes us understand better how he thinks everyone is turned against him. It’s not just Padmé coming to Mustafar. She is actually part of the plot against the chancellor. The whole point of the prequels is explaining how he became Darth Vader. Explaining how he lost faith in his devoted love for others is crucial in this. These scenes are so important for the overall picture
@@Reeal15 Even if I think it's a country mile better than AotC, I'd say the Rebellion scenes would have really elevated RotS. Lucas apparently thought it distracted from Anakin's story, and well, "fans" complaining about politics in Star Wars as they usually do...

Why was this scene cut?! I'm not sure where it'd be put in the film but I can't see any sensibile argument around cutting it. As mentioned, this makes the scene on Mustafar make much more sense and completes the tragedy.
I am so glad they cut the bad comedy parts with Obi Wan and Anakin but they definitely should have kept the dialogue about Anakin's thesis on the dichotomy in The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise

For those wondering why a lot of single frames or small groups of frames were removed, it likely comes down to pacing and lining up what we see on screen with the soundtrack to exacting specifications, that's the kind of thing you might sit in the studio and loop sections for 20 or 30 minutes to line up just perfectly.
Which is one of George’s greatest strengths as a director/editor. The final cut of each film is so finely tuned as a cinemo-sensory experience.

@@TheCapedWanderer Lucas did not edit. Thank god. A New Hope had to be saved from his edit, it was reviewed very poorly because of George's cut. Luckily his wife re-edited the film and it was well received.

I LOVE Palpatine's reaction at 15:12 like he knows the end for the Republic is near. His plan is almost fully complete. He's absolutely tired of pretending to be this nice guy friendly politician and Darth Sidious is starting to come out. This could have easily been left in the movie.
The political scenes would be PERFECT in Revenge of the Sith. They’re in the novelization, as fit right in.
That deleted Dooku line has messed with my head. I played the game so much that I thought I was being hit with a Mandela Effect every time I watched the movie!

It would take a lot of time if you do it on your own. I think you need a whole VFX team to finish these scenes
@@Julian-cm4wmyes and no. Computers are a ton more powerful nowadays allowing individual CG artists to create on a scope far greater than what was possible back then. Tools are more streamlined, render times are shortened giving them more time to focus on the art itself, etc.
It’s totally possible, but there wouldn’t be any money to it, you’d just have to find someone passionate enough to do it.
A 64 core dual socket threadripper and a couple 4090s probably out pace the tender performance of the entire render farm used to make some of the scenes.
You gotta remember this was in development over 20 years ago. Computers are quite literally thousands of times more powerful by now.
The lighting was not nearly as complex, they were rendering at MOST in like 720p-1080p and the textures/movement of the models was not nearly as advanced as today.
for example the scene where ki adi mundi and plo koon take a squad of jedi to shut down the droids at the geonosis arena fight

At 6:06 Anakin on the Invisible Hand walking around cloaked is actually meant for another scene when he is walking through the jedi temple after he stabs Shaak Ti in her other alternate death scene and you can see clones killing jedi in front of him as he walks through the jedi temple etc. It's super rough but it would be awesome if it got finished somehow

Imagine a world where Padme is one of the founders of what eventually becomes the rebel alliance. Imagine a world where instead of Mon Mothma in return of the Jedi, we had Padme. Her and Vader on opposite sides of the conflict. That would be incredible. The story would only become even more deep and dramatic.

This made me realize; The whole prequel trilogy really would have benefitted better as a live action TV show. Imagine how much better and more in depth these movies could have been.
Just imagine The Clone Wars show, but live action, leading to the finale of Revenge Of The Sith, and the duel on Mustafar is the final episode.
I guess. It would lose the main point on Anakin and the depiction of a fallen hope. The Jedi’s new hope was on him like Leia in Obi, only that one held onto his emotions and the other didn’t.
I agree that I’d love a longer version of these but the world is so massive we’d forget about Anakin.
No. Not live action. This would mean so much more ugly CGI standing out. They should remake the movies in Clone wars style instead. Including the writing and directing of the show.

The popularity of high-fidelity, high-budget miniseries is a relatively recent thing. (And even then, today's crunch culture made sure the "fidelity" isn't always part of the equation)
Back in the 2000s, 22-episode seasons were the norm, the format of TV series was NOT on the same caliber as full feature films. If you wanted to make the prequels into a TV show instead of a trilogy, you either had to make it look bad or quintuple the budget to make it barely equivalent to a movie.
Nah I’m good I like the live action movies the way they are the animated shows fill in the gaps nicely because they can do more like different aliens or cooler Jedi moves. VFX in live action is really difficult and expensive
The scenes regarding Padme make Anakin's fall much better.
Mace Windu is honestly one of the smartest individuals in the Star Wars universe. He makes all of the right assumptions and has the most correct line of thought. The only issue he had was not having the top authority in either the council or politics. Despite this, he was still honorable enough to respect the authority above him and simply voice his concerns instead of demanding others follow him.
I feel like after all of this, Yoda would have some choice words for Qui-Gon Jinn.

The extended Anakin and Palpatine scene where he is appointed as the representative is so good. I much prefer this version of the 'Plot to Destroy the Jedi?' scene as well. Having Obi-Wan there as the grounded one gives the decision to arrest the Chancellor a gravity that the Ki-Adi-Mundi version doesn't have in my opinion. It's also so surreal seeing scenes from the book in live-action with all of the actors and effects, the previously mentioned scene being a good example. Love this!

It’s so disappointing that all of the politics of the movie were cut because out of all 3 of the prequels, this one needed them the most, and George clearly forgot to remove the “heroes on both sides” line from the opening crawl after cutting them 💀

Shaak-Ti is one of my favorite SW characters and that death scene is so dark, I’m shocked they took it out. But, I’m glad they did. She deserves a better story than that.
But I will say, the way grevious caresses her head sent chills down my spine. It really made him look like a creep.

11:31 - they discuss the very thing Palpatine is said to have done by Grand Moff Tarkin during the briefing on the Death Star in "A New Hope".
Death Star becoming fully operational caused the Emperor to dissolve the Imperial Senate (which mostly was powerless anyway at that point) and shift any remaining duties of the Senators to the Sector Governors, who answered directly to him.

That one shot of Anakin at the Invisible Hand actually comes from an unfinished scene where the clones are storming the Jedi temple (That’s why Anakin has his hood on and Obi-Wan can’t be seen)

I imagine the lore of that scene of Anakin speaking droid mase the cut. I'm pretty sure and hope that it was an inside joke.
The fact that they moved Vader's arm restraints means he's given CGI arms when he breaks free from the restraints, and there's a bit where his CGI arms obviously merge back into Hayden's real arms. Obviously moving Vader's restraints was done quite late in the editing process.

What a delight to see Ian McIarmid in those deleted scenes, you can feel Palpatine underlying delight to conclude his manipulations on Anakin: it’s as he knows he already have won. He doesn’t need to rely on the Rule of Two anymore, he’s ready for it: the Return of the oppression of the Sith
As someone who has worked in vfx, I'm going to assume (based on a lot of the uploads from vfx reels) that the edited frames from the front and tail of shots are the "handles", essentially 8 frames either side of the shot so that vfx artists and editos have wiggle room to allow effects to kick in, and in case they want to shuffle the selected shot a few frames either side.
As someone who literally only has experience with VFX in Sony Vegas pro, this is extremely relatable in a very unexpected way

I appreciate you not going too far to try and match up the quality from cuts. the slight changes help point out the smaller cuts. Especially noticeable from those video game shots. I'd not have appreciated your efforts if it was matched up and color graded.
I'm kind of surprised by the cuts in jedi fighting frames. Very very minor but i felt more impact from most of those scenes. Great video!
I remember right before episode 3 came out my dad brought home a DVD. It was the directors cut and it had so many alternative shots. One shot would play right after the other. The enitre thing was maybe 5 hours long. I know my dad still has it. I have not watched that version in a long time.

These tiny pieces of footage are cut for a reason. It helps smooth out the pacing for the shot-to-shot editing. Lucas had full creative control and consciously made the decision to cut these scenes because it would lead to a stronger film.
And they mainly did. A lot of it is unnecessary, out of place, or redundant. There’s a level of trust you have to place on your audience that they have the intelligence to piece certain things together on their own without needing exposition for it every single time.

I know for a fact there is a close-up of Mace in there where they later changed the cityscape in the background. Also for the shot at 7:00 in your video, there are a few extra frames before Anakin pushes/shunts Dooku back. Might be other stuff as well.

Watching Hal9000's edit of this movie, the deleted scenes he restores and how he reworks some of the scenes makes a lot of it much more believable, and an already good movie even better. It felt like Anakin had legitimate political reasons for turning to the dark side and that plot point was not wholly dependant on romance. I also really liked Organa and Mon Mothma forming a secret committee in retaliation of the Republic's growing corruption under the chancellor, it was a really interesting pre-cursor to the Rebel Alliance. These movies are brilliant under the hood, they just needed some deleted scenes like these re-adding and a few icky lines or scenes trimming/discarding entirely.

I know we all hated the special editions George Lucas did, but we have to admit it would be very interesting if they redid the prequels with completely updated CGI. I think they would actually be insanely good.
