    Grab a coffee as this is a long one. I got hands on with a the what's dubbed as the entry level or affordable Rolex. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39mm 114300. Although is Rolex doesn't cost as much as the other, it still packs one hell of a punch. If you're thinking of buying a Rolex Explorer 214270 then compare it to this Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39mm 114300. This Oyster Perpetual is cheaper!

    Just a mention on the Explorer which has been made practically perfect in its latest guise with the hand length corrected. It’s awesome value. I have the (ubiquitous... yeah yeah) Date Sub and the ability to change the bracelet length on the fly is very practical and something I use a lot. It’s interesting how your wrist expands slightly going from a freezing day into a warm room. The easy link extension on the Explorer is perfectly adequate. You only need to go up and down by a couple of mm in most cases unless you go skiing up a mountain for example or fly to a foreign beach over 30C. I’d say if you are torn over the pep 39 and the Explorer 39 go Explorer every time. It’s not much more cash and you’re getting a much cooler more practical product that will also hold or increase in resale potential over the coming years, especially if it’s a limited run and they discontinue its production for another iteration.

      Send it in for service, or take it to a reputable master watch maker. If you go to Rolex, put a note in it to not replace the original parts. Like the hands,the face,the "glass",etc.,or you could make an expensive mistake.

  • @alexcooper6265
    @alexcooper6265 Před 6 lety +5

    Your friend is right - that old Air King looks roughly 6 million times better than the new model. The new Oyster Perpetual is a nice addition too - I have relatively small wrists but I still doubt I could pull off a 34mm watch.
    Rolex's best watches are simple and refined. Two tone datejusts and gold subs are really not my taste and are responsible for the mixed feelings many watch lovers have about Rolex - ie. people will think "does that person love watches or are they just posturing?".
    If (when, haha) I get a Rolex it will be a vintage Datejust, Explorer 1 or maybe even one of these but I think I'm leaning towards the Explorer. It's subtle which I like.
    (One gripe - I wouldn't describe Sinn as entry level).

      Residential Leasing you’re barking up the wrong tree buddy, i’m not making this an OP vs Explorer comment. Read more carefully.
      And actually, not that i was arguing this to begin with, but since you bring it up: it’s not the same watch. The clasp on the Explorer is better for a sports watch, the bezel is flat and more popular, and the dial is more legible with the hands & 3-6-9. Speaking of 3-6-9, it’s also the more iconic watch, despite what “technically” happened all those years ago when Everest was summited. OP is to the Explorer, what the Fifty Fathoms is to the Submariner. Wasn’t the one that did the deed, but it’s the one that’s the icon. That’s very important to Rolex fans, don’t act like it isn’t, now that we’re comparing internally.

      @gmansplit Před 6 lety +1

      Clyve Watch-Wrangler No, they aren't. The best value Rolex is the sky-dweller, because it's the only one(besides the YM2) that isn't replicated well. The OP is on the RWG list of super reps, meaning a fake 400 dollar watch is practically identical to the 5000 dollar real one.

    • @gmansplit
      @gmansplit Před 6 lety

      Well, my opinion is that if you want a Rolex, buy a really nice fake superfranken(a term for a watch with some fake parts but also many real parts that is literally indistinguishable from the real thing for ~1/4 of the price), or get a Sky-Dweller.

    • @Teymurphell2
      @Teymurphell2 Před 5 lety +6

      Thats right guys, it's an amazing piece. Why is it considered less sporty than the Airking or Milgaus? It has a better movement. So why pay more for the other models, for the clasp and dial? Forget it. This is the perfect everyday all around watch. Entry level? Nope. It's a Rolex and its beautifully designed and esthetically pleasing. 39mm is a perfect modern size.

      @gmansplit buying a relatively cheap replica is one thing (sub 500) but I never understood franken watches other than for the purposes of tinkering and modding. With Gen parts you ending up spending a lot of money and at the end of the day it’s still fake. I’d much rather save up and buy the real deal. much more classy to go buy a seiko or other ‘entry’ level brand with history #fakewatchesforfakepeople

    Thanks for this review.
    What I like about this is that it is one of the more appropriately "least expensive" new Rolex and it is the perhaps the bare essence of Rolex in the most understated and underrated fashion. I like the fact it is also one of the least mainstream watches so it is actually something different from the mass collected Rolexes.
    I REALLY like the new monochromatic colors for the 39 OP. I personally would want the white dial version. I'm not sure if I would go 36mm or 39mm. I am leaning towards the 39mm, but would like to see how the 36mm fits and wears on my 6.875" wrist.
    I can see this being my one and only watch for a long time. I inherited my father's Rolex 6426 and it was his one and only watch basically forever.
    As such, I really want the new white dial OP, but then again the 6426 is basically the same watch in original 34mm vintage manual wind fashion. So, IDK? Do I need one? Would it be doubling up in the same basic watch design?
    Damn you! Now I really want one!
    There's something cool about going after what I would consider to be an underdog in the Rolex catalog. Although having more prestigious backstory and iconism is great, this OP line of watches doesn't need to ride on its own laurels, fame or mainstream popularity to be very nice watch to own. It is a pure Rolex in quality and design that does all a watch really needs to do.
    Fyi, the only "colorful" version I liked most was the Grey ish rhodium dial version with the light blue pips. Most subtle but the color combination and small highlights were nice and tasteful. I'd still go with one of these newer monochromatic versions, though.

    From a pure design point-of-view, I think the OP trumps a lot of the other Rolex offerings. It has a similar form to the Datejust but the symmetry it lacks - the same thing that makes the Sub no-date better than the date.
    I disagree on the coloured hour markers on the pre-existing versions. The bright red and signal green aren’t my thing, but I’m sure they work for other people and personally I think the light blue on the grey works very well.

    It is a great watch, very in tradition with what Rolex was originally-a solid, very well made, understated item, much like pre 1990s Mercedes Benz. That is a watch you could buy and wear for a very long time then pass to your son as his first great watch. In the US in the mid 60s the Lincoln Continental was a very fine car and their ads often had the tag line of "Understated elegance is a Lincoln Continental". I think this Rolex fits that well. Thank you very much for a great review, the OP is a nice classic watch and I like the black dial. One important point to be aware of, if you purchase a watch or Rolex Tax Free at the UK Airport when flying outside the EU (would be TAX free price), you would need to declare the watch and pay back the 20% TAX when returning back to the UK, so this means no TAX free savings.

    I agree with you and find the term 'entry level' quite condescending. Same goes for those "Bought my first 'real' watch" comments that suggest anything less than £XXXX isn't a real watch. One man's entry level watch is another man's collection. For the price of the Rolex OP, I could have a Tudor Black Bay 36, a Monta Triumph and a Sinn 556i, some of which come with excellent finishes, date wheels and adjustable clasps. At the true entry level end, e.g. Seiko, Hamilton, Steinhart, Christopher Ward, Archimede, Maen, Lorier, etc I could have a whole plethora of watches for the price of the entry level Rolex.

    B & J: Nice review! The watch here is an homage to the original Rolex they produced when they first came out with the Oyster cased Perpetual movement in the 1930's, period. This is the one! This is the only one that captures the essence that made the Rolex brand Rolex. Make no mistake. If you want a Rolex in all it's former glory this is the only one you need to buy. This would have been the main Rolex watch that so many POW's in WWII (while still in prison camps) received from Rolex when Hans Wildorf decided to give credit to (until their release and back on their feet), without knowing if Rolex would ever receive a dime back after the war. All the other Rolex models should bow down and and pay homage to this great model from Rolex.

    I was looking for a review on a Black dial 114300 model. A channel called JazTime small demonstration/review videos on all of the dial variants of this watch. Another one called "Bear Cooney Watches" has a brilliant review on the white version.
    This is a beautiful watch. The white indices on the black dial provide much more visibility than on the white dial. This is a perfect example to mention on forum threads with topics such as "If you could have only one watch". A timeless classic design (without any stupid colours).

Love it, what can I say.

As a regular working guy (I'm an electrician) I'm not in a position yet to buy a really nice watch.... yet. I agree with you. There are no "affordable" or "entry level" Rolexes. There are models that are less blingy but thats not the same thing. I have a Tudor North Flag and many people call it the "poor man's Rolex" I couldn't disagree more. Made as well as a Rolex by any reasonable definition and although they share "DNA" with Rolex, they have their own unique thing going on. Just my few thoughts cool video.

    Bit late to the party on this video!!!! But I've been looking at Explorers and watched your other vids on them and you mentioned the OP with the 3,6,9 dial. Thought process....new OP with 3,6,9 V 14270, at least 20 years old now. I'm 54, want my watches to go to my kids, so a new watch now will be at least 20 (hopefully more) years old when they get it, a 14270 will be 40 years old, at least. They've got to then maintain it and hopefully pass it on. My kids are a teacher, a Police officer, a sports therapist and a kitchen designer, amazing jobs, but not Rolex maintenance jobs!.So, you got me thinking, and I love the idea of the new OP with the 3,6,9...another great vid, cheers, will be after some of your straps in the near future...Bear

    The dial is more balanced than the Exp1. Instead of triangle + crown logo + Rolex at 12 o'clock, it *uses* the 5-point crown *as* the 12 marker, then matches 2 lines of text above, 2 lines below the handset. Wish it had the easy-link clasp, then it would totally rock.

    Hi, great video... again.
    I agree with the things you say, and personally I really don't like the expression 'entry level'. To me that sounds like you should aspire to buy more expensive pieces in the future... which to me shouldn't be a goal in itself.
    I started out with buying a Rolex Submariner 116610LN, but then found out that I also wanted a Rolex that would fly under the radar. I liked the Explorer, but thought that the dial looked too much like the Submariner with the triangle at twelve o'clock and the Mercedes hands. Also I really would like a blue dial, so I decided on the Oyster Perpetual 116000, 36 mm with the blue dial, which also has the 3, 6 and 9.
    I love it and there is absolutely no reason to call it an entry level piece... The quality is just as good as the Submariner.

  • @giacomomargutti215
    @giacomomargutti215 Před 6 lety

    Agree with you almost 100%, but if we agree that "entry level" is not a synonym for "cheap" (or "poor man's watch"), so it is actually an entry-level watch WITHIN Rolex range. I mean, a Porsche Boxster actually is the entry-level car in Porsche's world. No matter how much money it is still worth. A 6-million-pound yacht it is still an entry-level "boat" if it turns out that that one is the cheapest boat in that super expensive yachts brand's range. Entry-level does not mean "cheap" or "un-expensive", it just means that the first price at the base of that range's pyramid. I know that most of the people give "entry-level" a negative connotation... but it shouldn't work this way. This entry-level Rolex (within their range of watches) is totally not a watch to enter the magic world of watches, because it actually costs a fortune to most of us. So it's not an entry-level watch in general. But it is in Rolex range ('cause it's still the cheapest).
