- Hello Everyone!
In today's video, I wanted to have an in-depth conversation about my experience being an English teaching assistant in Spain. I will also go into more specifics regarding applications, program options, pay, and what my everyday routine was like while at school.

When I was learning Spanish in high school I was so excited about Spanish that I wanted to become a Spanish teacher. I discussed it with the guidance counselor and he told me that I could not teach in high school or the lower grades. When I got to college I majored in Spanish and still wanted to become a teacher at the college level. Then I heard “Publish or Perish”. That absolutely terrified me. Then one day a group of students were sitting around in a break room. Everybody was telling what their plans were and when I said that I wanted to teach Spanish a girl at the other end of the table almost yelled at me, “YOU’LL never teach!” She was right. A week from today I will be 77 years old so I am way too old now and I never took any classes for learning how to teach. I have thought of teaching English to Spanish speakers but it was just not meant to be. I could never teach children anyway. I would have to teach adults if I were to teach anybody but that is never going to happen either. I have always wanted to live or at least spend some time in Spain but I have never we travelled in my life. It’s too late now.
Check about the Non Lucrative Visa in Spain. Could be an option
It's never too late!
Hi Clarence! I’m very sorry to hear you haven’t had an opportunity to teach yet. I hope you find some motivation and do not let this discourage you! There is no time like the present :)
Maddie I’m moving to Madrid to teach on Sunday. Thank you for this !
Best of luck!!!
Are they short on English tutors ? Im also moving their soon .
Interesting, great tips. thanks for sharing :^)
Saludos Maddie’s desde el suroeste de España - Huelva (Greetings Maddie's from the southwest of Spain (Huelva)).
I may be biased here but your vocabulary is expanding in both languages it seems like. I just subscribed to your account. Great explanation of the public and private school systems in Spain.
Maddie, en un próximo viaje a España, deberías acercarte al norte y hacer ese "Camino de las Estrellas" que haría que no volvieses a mirar el mundo de la misma manera. Un saludo desde esa esquina verde, desde ese Finisterre de pereginación.
You are the best! I love your videos ♥️
Thank you so much!
It's true. Sevilla is very nice.
Thank you for the content. I am getting my Master's in ESL and I planning to visit Spain this year to start looking for jobs. I am fluent in Spanish but not academic Spanish. Thanks
Maddie I was just living in Madrid for my masters! Look into a masters!
Amo tu rostro 💕
Good! I was thinking of doing this, as I taught in the states a little...But the income I am not so sure about... in Spain.
It'd be interesting if you did a video on each type of student you encountered and what worked for each set of students. I wanna do this but I'm unsure what kind of students I would choose became I've never taught
Hola profe!!! 😂😂😂😂
Great information, thank you for sharing this! Im looking to get my CELTA certification. What are your thoughts on CELTA? Thanks again!
I am thinking of doing the nowcap but the people I am getting my TEFL from would be the ones I can reach out to for support once I am there.
Hi Maddie. Great video. I think l am going have to watch it at least 2 or 3 times because l have a broken arm and trying to write down notes is very hard, plus you speak so quickly. I am from Australia and l am 51. I do not have a degree just a TEFL Certificate however l can do the degree from one of the Universities in Melbourne online. Will they favour younger people over me because of my age? I prefer to teach children. In Australia you must pass what is called "Working with children check" So basically the police will do a check on you to see whether or not your fit to work with children. Also my understanding by my research is a good wage is between 800 to 1300 Spanish money. Sorry l don't know whether they use the Euro. Anyway l will watch it again. If you could find some time to answer these questions would really appreciate it Cheers from Melbourne Australia
My plan is to teach ESL to Spanish business owners. Also communication and negotiation skills. What are your thoughts?
Why did you personally return to the states? I’m a second year aux in Madrid with BEDA and contemplating a 3rd…I absolutely love the city and enjoy the teaching aspect as well but for me it’s family/money/age holding me back (I’m in my 30s)
What's making you wanna return? I'm 28, will be 29 by the time I move to Spain but why do you feel like your age is holding you back?
I’d love to do the same the other way around! Teaching Spanish in the US would be a dream for me!! Any recommendations?
As for teaching I’m not too sure! But I know Au pairing is a popular option
Thank you for that valuable information. If I could give you ten Likes, I would.
It's a bummer they only accept recent graduates. Wish I had heard about the program earlier.
What did you think of the interview process at Meddeas? I found it very strange.
The questions they asked me were:
Name 3 things do you not like about people?
What one of those 3 things do you see in yourself?
What would make you not enjoy the program?
I was never accepted in the end and they never reached back to me. My application was very Madrid focused so that could be why I wasn’t accepted.
This year I am applying through Conversa so my fingers are crossed🤞
That’s very weird lol
Maddie, you said that this was technically a student visa but does that mean you have to be enrolled in a degree in a country to participate?
When you work as a teacher in Spain specifically usually you are required to take a class paid for by the program so that you can be under a student visa, rather than work
🥺 I think that I'm surrending.
Are you an Aztec alumna?
Amiga date cuenta: la weá es en español.
3:59 for a supposed English teacher, it’s frustrating how you keep using improper verb conjugation 😒
Hi ! Thank you for sharing your experience. It's something that I've recently become interested in so I appreciate your insight.
If it isn't too much trouble I just have a few questions. 1) Did you graduate and then go teach? Because you said how it's a student visa so I was just a little confused aha. 2) If I don't do a degree in Spanish, but still learn basic levels of conversation, would I be able to get into these programs?
