By this time , Martina had already made the quarters of the AO that year and won Wimbledon doubles , played the Olympics, and had a win over Steffi! She was also 16th seed here. At such a young age.
Never realised Arantxa was just 24 here. It was basically the end of her prime but seemed like she’d been around for ages! And after winning the French at 26 in 1998 she was pretty much done.
Ohhhh!!!
That bad overrule by Jane Harvey at 31:45 was outrageous. And does anyone know what recourse there is as a player. I’m sure Hingis would’ve appreciated an apology after the fact, or some sort of recourse for such a bad mistake. It’s horrible, and honestly Sanchez Vicario constantly fishing for calls in her favor most likely nudged Harvey into that overrule. And this happened often during ASV’s career. Maddening and unsportsmanlike imo
It's so stupid to blame Arantxa. I was very surprised at this moment. It turned out there was a moment when the judges made a mistake in favor of Arantxa. I watched a lot of her matches and I don’t know any more such examples. But I know many moments where the judges made a mistake against Arantxa
@@ДмитрийАндреев-р6г whatever you say 🤷🏻♂️ just in this match how many times did Arantxa throw her hands up on close balls to try to influence an out call in her favor?? It’s as often as she has a chance to do, in my opinion.
If Arantxa had won at least one final out of 5 in the previous 3 months, then she would definitely have won this game. Defeat due to a sagging psyche and a complete loss of self-confidence. Won the 2nd set, took a 2-0 lead in the second and began to make stupid unforced mistakes one after another
I think in some ways she was never the same after 1994. She'd reached number one and I think after that her psyche changed. Throughout her career, there were a lot of times when she was the favourite and the pressure got to her. I suspect also that the physical grind took its toll.
@@zeddeka She hit her forehand and backhand both with more power in 94 than she ever did after too. The 95 Wimbledon final vs Graf is the only time she ever came close. Of course she wasn't known mainly as a power player, but the improved penetration in her shots helped her win 2 slams in 94, including the surprising US Open.

still boggles my mind how Hingis was just 15 YO here. Now adays it's unheard of to have a talent like this THAT YOUNG.
there is no talent in womens tennis now,its just slugging
Wow, such a rare find. Thanks!
Amazing! Great quality. Thank you so much!!

That's right. She and Sabatini had almost parallel trajectories and descents.
Sabatini a bit earlier at both ends..
Unbelievable to see a 15 year old girl play such good tennis at a Grand Slam!

The commentators even mentioned this as one of the reasons for her falling out with Jana Novotna. I just call it like I see it.

One of the worst matches I've ever seen ASV play.
