      @@geranienbaum well... it becomes more and more likely that not Russia, but our friends in Ukraine were behind the explosions destroying the pipelines.
      That is quite a daunting thought.
      And if it turns out to be true, then a next Winter with exploding prices for heating or even freezing people will certainly flip the political landscape of Germany to the far right. That far right, which still propagates that Russia is a good friend (probably with lots of financial backing from exactly that direction).
      Keep in mind, that 3 or 4 federal states will have elections where that far right is already polling in the first place.
      Gaining access to these government will also gain access to the lower house of the German legislature. Effectively being able to influence federal law and block laws not liked by Russia.

    • @EinChris75
      @EinChris75 Před 9 měsíci

      @@geranienbaum yes, the Winter was - again - exceptionally mild. December was "only" 1.8° too hot, January whopping 4.11° and February also 2.83° hotter than average.
      And don't forget that Europe also has a shared network for natural gas.
      Lets hope that the French get their power plants running this year, so Germany wont have to burn gas to generate electricity for France.
      Germany was lucky in 2022/23. It's unlikely, but not impossible to get a Winter with regular temperatures. In particular with the gulf stream getting weaker and weaker each year due to warmer water in the Arctic sea.

    • @tessjuel
      @tessjuel Před 9 měsíci +1

      It is happening although not as fast as we should wish for. There are four factors that slow it down.
      + Resistance from the big fossil fuel corporations. They are huge and powerful and are fighting teeth and claw to keep their market shares.
      + The "Not In My Backyard" attitude. Even people who are generally positive to sustainable energy don't want a nuclear power plant or a windmill farm anywhere near their own homes.
      + Investment costs. Sustainable energy is generally cheaper than fossil fuel in the long run now and price gap between the two is growing. But building brand new power plants of any kind still costs money. I did some rough calculations and if they are in the right ballpark we're talking about an investment as high as 5-10% of Europe's total annual GDP. Spread out over ten years it's doable, 20 years no problem. But all of it in one go, no chance!
      + Manufacturing capacity. We need factories to build the parts, we need highly skilled expert workers to install the equipment etc., etc. We do not have unlimited capacity here.

    • @vylbird8014
      @vylbird8014 Před 9 měsíci

      Germany did invest heavily in solar - but then ended the subsidy program that was leading to such rapid deployment. They also made one huge mistake: They moved away from nuclear, in response to public fear. The schedule was accelerated following the Fukushima incident.
      They're doing great on wind, but there's always room for more turbines!
