  • A huge thank you to Gleichweit for sending out their 7-1, 7-4 and 8-4 clarinet mouthpieces for review! While this video was not sponsored in any way, I appreciate them sending the mouthpieces out for the sole purpose of doing this review. I had a lot of fun trying these mouthpieces out and you can hear additional excerpts (Scheherazade, Roger Zare) on my Instagram account. After you watch this video go check out the additional recordings and then let me know which mouthpiece was your favorite!

    Just found this video, and a great demonstration. From what I heard, the 8.4 was clearly to stuffy and resistant compared to the 71. and 7.4. The 7.1 had a very clear, dark and warm sound, but the 7.4 was not too far behind, and choice would be a matter of preference.

    I get a 7-4 recently, really courious desing. It has really wide tip and side rails but surprisely is easy blowing and easy (and very round) articulation. After take some measures, it doesn't fit with the facing and opening length at all. House brand secrets I guess. I really love the sound and the eveness it ofers. Totally recomendable!!

    Such an interesting review of such interesting mouthpieces! I feel that the B8-4 had the richest tone, though not by much, over the 7-1, with the 7-4 definitely in last place. (How I wish you had played the B8-4 some more.) There could be other reasons for that: by the third performance of the same piece, the reed may have "warmed up", and you may have relaxed a little more (even though you know the piece so well) in playing it. You did seem to struggle just a bit with the 7-4, but with more practice on it, perhaps it would have sounded equally as fine. Thank you so much for these reviews.

    • @ParkHouseCreations
      @ParkHouseCreations  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching! I am glad you found the review interesting! Another reason you may have preferred the B8-4; it’s facing is actually closest to the mouthpiece I am most used to playing on! It certainly does have a compelling sound and when I was listening back to the recordings while filming the rest of the review I kept second guessing whether I had made the right choice or not lol!

      @@ParkHouseCreations We listeners hear only very limited samples from you in your reviews, whereas you obviously play on each mouthpiece that you review a lot more than we hear, so your verbal assessment is probably more accurate than what we might take away from our meagre listening. In addition, we are dependent on the recording devices used. In your Tosca mouthpiece review, you described the sound as large, round and warm; to me it sounded warm, but a long way from large and round. (I preferred these Gleichweits.) Yet you now play the Tosca quite a lot, so it must be satisfying for you - and again, perhaps we need to give more credence to your verbal assessment, based on more extensive experience, than to what our ears might tell us in a fleeting way. And I know that different people hear things differently, that gets proven time and time again.

    • @ParkHouseCreations
      @ParkHouseCreations  Před 2 lety

      You bring up some good points! In my previous space, recording could be a challenge. The acoustics of the room itself left a lot to be desired and in hindsight my mic placement was probably not the best for that space. Then of course, no matter what equipment we play on we are always trying to produce the sound we “hear” in our minds. With the Tosca review, I shifted to softer, more vibrant sounding reeds than I would normally use in an effort to get closer to what internally I was striving for and to also get the cleanest sounding recording possible out of that room. Perhaps in doing so, I obfuscated the natural tendencies of the mouthpiece. And thats where I think you are right, that at times, my spoken descriptions are probably better indicators for what most people could expect. For instance, even if the sound didn’t come across as round in that particular space, with those microphones, with my instrument/reeds, I still believe that most people would find the Tosca to be naturally “rounder” than the majority of mouthpieces on the market. (It’s a characteristic I’ve noticed when friends have tried the Tosca back-to-back with their current mouthpiece.)There are some exceptions to this of course! (Certain crystal mouthpieces being prime among them in my opinion), but I digress! Fortunately, I think I am getting better at recording the instrument and I am pretty happy with how the recordings from the Gleichweit review and IG posts turned out sound-wise. At least, I feel they were a reasonably accurate portrayal of the way they sounded in person. Thank you again for watching and commenting. I spend a lot of time thinking about these various factors and my perception of the way things sound, so it’s always interesting hearing from an outside perspective!

      @ParkHouseCreations  Před rokem

      Hi, sorry I’m just getting back to this now! I generally play on shorter barrels (65mm/64mm) and I think these mouthpieces played pretty well in tune at 440. I don’t remember the throat tones being particularly low, but I think I would struggle to play at 442 with these mouthpieces without an even shorter barrel as well. I’m actually not sure how they are pitched, (440, 442, or 443) maybe they will pitch some higher for you?

    Hi Eric, what do you play on when you aren't making reviews?

    • @ParkHouseCreations
      @ParkHouseCreations  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey James, that’s a good question! Before I started doing these reviews a refaced BD5 had been my go-to mouthpiece for about 4 years. But right now, I have two main mouthpieces that I play, an excellent refaced Livengood (you can hear this in my “opening vintage vandoren reeds” video) and the PlayNick Tosca model. They are both excellent and it basically comes down to what ensemble I’m playing in or what piece I am playing. The Livengood has more natural ring/power/etc. and the Tosca is effortlessly round and covered.
      Also, I hope that you’ve been able to get some use out of that Grabner! I’d be curious to hear how you have liked it, feel free to DM me!

    RE: Plastic vs Rubber - the plastic mouthpieces from ESM are some of the best machine manufactured mouthpieces available. The facings are dead nuts even and repeatable. So they Germans are doing something right with their mouthpieces. The Gleichweit uses O-rings though which are more subject to breakage (I've just repaired one in fact).

      Hi, I believe in this video I used a Vandoren V12 strength 3.5 for each mouthpiece and on my Instagram posts where I play on the mouthpiece I used mostly a D'Addario Reserve Classic strength 3.5. Both worked very well and I think it would just come down to your individual brand preference!

  • @jmwoods190
    @jmwoods190 Před 2 lety +1

    For my ears it's a toss-up between the 7-1 & 7-4, they both sound great but each in a different way. The 7-1 sounds more focused, like a brighter variety of the 'Germanic' sound(think Karl Leister or the late George Pieterson), which is ideal for the Brahms(and Beethoven excerpts) IMO, while the 7-4 sounds slightly broader and deeper(but still retains a good focus) which I think suits the Schumann very well(and also works by Mendelssohn). The 8-4 is a bit less direct than the 2 7s, though I see its potential in some of the heavier vibrato passages in the repertoire. Lastly, I wish Johannes had sent you the 8-2 as well, I'm curious what the 2nd number denotes here!

    • @ParkHouseCreations

      @@ParkHouseCreations George Pieterson was the principal clarinetist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1975-2004, and he played on Wurlitzer Reform Boehm clarinets. He sadly passed away in 2016. His Rachmaninov solos are among one of the best IMHO.
      PS I meant to say I wish they've sent you the B8(as the B8-2's facing is veerry long!) along with the 3 mpcs you've tried so we could hear what exactly caused the difference on the B8-4's less direct sound!

    • @ParkHouseCreations
      @ParkHouseCreations  Před 2 lety

      It’s a good question, I liked both of them and I found both comfortable to play on. Take this with a grain of salt since I never played them side by side, I think the PlayNick Tosca has slightly more cover and produces a slightly more round sound naturally, while the Gleichweit’s produced a sound with a lot of clarity. I feel like they provide two different takes on the “Austrian” sound, but both are intriguing in their own way!

    Excellent review as always. What are the costs of each in USD? Is there a US distributor? Do you know if there is much variation in quality and response from mpc. to mpc of the same model necessitating trying several before choosing one? In US plastic mpcs. there is a fragility for easy chipping or breaking over hard rubber. Do you think it is the same for these? I am subscribed to your channel.

    • @ParkHouseCreations
      @ParkHouseCreations  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for watching! All good questions, I'll do my best to answer them! I believe all of these models cost 190 euro's which today is about $225ish USD. I do not believe that there is a U.S. distributor at this time, though I could be wrong! I don't think I can really answer your consistency question, I was only able to try one of each model. However, at the very least I can say that none of them were "duds" or had obvious imperfections. In general when I do these reviews, if the single copy I receive is good, I don't worry too much about quality control for the brand. To put it simply, I would personally feel comfortable ordering just one of a Gleichweit's if I was interested in a particular model, even if there would be variations between mouthpieces of that same model. And it's an interesting question about fragility. The material definitely feels a tiny bit different, but without doing a drop test (I'm sorry, I won't be doing that hahaha) I can't definitively say if its more or less durable. I would think you wouldn't have to worry too much about it though! Thanks for subscribing!!
