  • This is the 2nd video in my series reviewing the clarinet mouthpieces coming out of Nick Kuckmeier's PlayNick workshop. In this video I review his Verdi Traviata model which was made as a replacement for the PlayNick Soloist M mouthpiece. This mouthpiece features a very wide tip opening and long facing, it is very different than the kind of mouthpiece I am used to playing! Find out what I thought of it in the video!

    I use the Verdi Traviata mouthpiece with my Patricola C-clarinet. It delivers a fine sound with a Legere European Cut 2.5.

    Hello! Amazing review of this mouthpiece! I was actually thinking if giving this mouthpiece a try! I'm way overdue with a mouthpiece change! I have been using the Vandoren m13 lyre for over 4 years now haha. I currently use D'Addario organic traditionals in a size 4, but I also tried my friend's Playnick Puccini! I use the size 3 reed because of resistance but was in love with the sound! And I was specifically looking at this one because I heard it was a little less resistant and a bit more flexible and open in sound! Do you think it's a good idea for me to try this mouthpiece?? I'm definitely going to move down reed strengths, and can adjust to the resistance if so! 😀

    Great video as always! I think you have to try out a couple of these, they vary quite a lot. This is a great quality mps, but the consistency and intonation mps to mps is not stable. It is just the problem with hard rubber. Try some different strength and brands reeds with this mps, I know people using 3s or even 2.5s on it to get more colours from it.

      Thanks! Ya, the flexibility and color potential with this mouthpiece is really impressive. I was definitely on the harder end of reeds, but I can imagine the color potential with softer reeds! I would definitely like to compare the intonation between different copies of this mouthpiece at some point in the future. Thanks for watching, I always appreciate your insight!

    Now that you have tried a very open mouthpiece, you should try a Viennese style mouthpiece. Gleichweit has Viennese style mouthpieces adjusted for French bore clarinets. Including the facing style used by Daniel Ottensamer called his DO facing 👍

      Oh that’s a great idea! I’ve always been curious about Viennese style mouthpieces and it’s good to know there is an option adjusted for French clarinets. Thanks for the info!

      Do you use french reeds as well or German style reeds for this type of mouthpieces?

    What are your thoughts compared with the Tosca and B2?

    • @ParkHouseCreations
      @ParkHouseCreations  Před 3 lety +3

      You should check out my channel to see the reviews for those mouthpieces to hear my full thoughts, but in general the Tosca and B2 are more to my personal preference. I think if you’re used to using a lot of air and are trying to achieve a more soloistic or larger Scandinavian sound you would enjoy the Traviata more, but if you want something a little more reserved, more geared towards blending, I would go with the Tosca or B2. I hope this helps!

      @@ParkHouseCreations Yeah I had watched them :) Was kinda just after a direct comparison. Think I'll look into the Tosca. Now to decide between standard and 440! Did you have the 440?

    • @ParkHouseCreations
      @ParkHouseCreations  Před 3 lety +2

      Gotcha, thanks for watching them! The B2 I received seemed to be pitched high to 443 to help compensate for the lower pitch that plastic reeds seem to typically play at. The Tosca I received was pitched to 440. For me the 440 was perfect, I typically play with shorter barrels; 65mm or 64mm on my A, so I didn’t have to change anything on my setup to get it to play in-tune. Your mileage may vary depending on what barrel lengths you typically use.

    How does this mouthpiece compare to the M30?

    • @ParkHouseCreations
      @ParkHouseCreations  Před 3 lety

      Hey Patrick, I’m not sure I’ve spent any time on a regular M30 (I did spend some time with an M30D), but I am pretty confident in saying that the Verdi Traviata is considerably different from both of those mouthpieces. It is much more open than either mouthpiece; M30 (1.15mm tip opening) vs the Traviata (1.28mm opening). There would definitely be an adjustment period if you were to go from one to the other!
