I participated in the Aus/NZ International Program in 2017 and thought the exact same! I knew that a lot of my wages were going back to Disney and they were completely milking us for as much money as possible... BUT I still had an amazing time, met so many friends from all over the world and had the chance to work at WDW. Without that program I don't think I ever would have done that.

I did the IDCP in 2013 as operations cast in Fanland. I’m from Sydney and I 100% think it is worth it. I earned $7.67 an hour, paid $80 a week at Vista, and worked 50-60 hour weeks. I definitely gave all my earnings back to Disney through shopping, eating and staying at the resorts. But I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I made friends and memories for life.

I worked at a GREAT attraction, had great memories, made life long friends. I've had people come to me in later years and ask me about the CP and that's what I told them. You also have access to a company that has its reaches in every job field. The ability to intern for the summer in that sort of environment is priceless. Yes, Disney is taking advantage of you, but they are giving you access to countless opportunities that could shape the rest of your life. When I worked at Six Flags they had a similar program, but not anywhere close to as glamorous. I feel this would have been a better avenue for me to take then the summer jobs I often took which hardly helped me after graduating from college. Lastly, I did the math. Renting a room, which you share, for that amount is really cheep. I am sure if you looked for comparable housing it would be 2 or 3 times that amount.

Ultimately before you agree to do the program you do a lot of research and going into it I pretty much knew all of this and weighed up the positives and negatives. I wasn’t a CP, but I did work at Disneyland while going to college. As a fan of Disney parks, it was exciting to work there and I would never give up the memories and experience. The pay was not great, of course; there are enough people lining up to press buttons on rides or run a cash register or even sweep the floor, that the market is in Disney’s favor. The word “greed” might come to mind when you’re charging guests more for ice cream bars in one minute than you’ll make in two hours of work. But at the same time, I got so much value out of the job. I went from a shy introvert to someone who felt comfortable addressing large crowds of hundreds before parades and in attractions, even telling jokes on the Jungle Cruise. I learned how to diffuse difficult situations when things went wrong, which helped me in future jobs. It looked great on my resume, and opened doors to jobs at the Disney studio, followed by better offers at its competitors. I even applied what I learned about Disney operations to my own small business. The story isn’t the same for everyone. You have to have the mindset that this won’t be your career or pay your rent in the long term, and milk it for all of the fun, learning, etc. that you can. But there is some privilege in being able to think this way- if you need a living wage, life as a CM can be hard, and its best to look elsewhere.. Then, there were people I met who stayed at Disney for too long, lured by the great discounts, status, and seniority, or who couldn’t get over the corporate greed. But if you look long term, it’s an experience well worth taking as a CP, or for a few seasons if you’re local.

I might have been in a more privileged position as an International Epcot CM (those are considered full time staff, with all the benefits that come with that status), but for me it was anything but a scam. I love WDW and trough my work in Epcot I was able to spend an entire year playing at the parks, for free. Yes we got paid scraps, but if you just wanna take a year off and enjoy it, it's a great opportunity. Granted, I was lucky with my hours. I was able to take tons of days off, which isn't always possible. For me it was a year long vacation, with some work in-between. Thankfully I liked the work too, tho. Nowdays I have a cozy office job and an annual pass to Disneyland Paris, so I can go every few weekends. But it's simply not the same.

Born and raised in California When I grew up I worked over 10 years at Six Flags Magic Mountain and six years at Knotts berry farm, Seven years at the LA Zoo so I have plenty amusement park experience and I went to get a job at Disney and was very well told unless you were a college student you are not getting in or the other option was to be a senior over 65 that they only hire. Also DIsney is Union. I also ultimately Decided not to work for Disney because I love the park so much I didn’t want to know about the garbage in the background

Glad someone made a video about this, been thinking about this forever. Was a CP in 2018 that turned into a full time cast member been there since, I absolutely loved the DCP but man it’s shocking how much Disney profits from it. Don’t forget about how CPs bring friends and family to the parks making Disney more money, and aside from profit the program does recruit future long term cast members to that move up and contribute to the company. Many mangers starting out at CPs and such.
Also I gotta add while I’m kinda jealous future CPs get a nicer housing facility, it will be a bit more expensive than my $106 a week at Chatham, plus I feel the trashy housing was a key part of the CP experience. Future CPs don’t know what they’re missing.

As a DCP alumni from January-June 2022, FCV (from what most people have said) looks pretty on the outside but isn't exactly well built, but I found it comfortable enough for me.
And they also did raise the pay for CPs to ~$14/hr (those who work housekeeping and the Emporium at MK make a little more), not the best pay and I made do with what I had for food at the Super Target the busses go to (the Target up the road is too small and definitely not worth it imo). But for me the experience was what made it for me working in Merchandise at Animal Kingdom at Windtraders and Mombasa, the cast members and leadership I worked with made me actually feel excited to go to work every day. Not to mention how good having Disney smacked on your resume looks once you're done. I definitely enjoyed my experience there and I'd love if I could do it again, just wish we could pick our roles again, when they brought it back you had no choice where they put you, they stick you where they need people and not everyone likes it and some people term from the Program cause of it.
Is the program a scam? Oh yeah I definitely had that in my mind at Traditions but the experience was just so hard for me to pass up.

Great video guys! I did the CRP for Canada back in 2014, and it was honestly the best time of my life! We came into the program with no illusions that at $8.03/hour and $130/week(ish) for housing we weren’t going to become millionaires in the program... But the thing we always kept in mind was that even though we were cash poor, the program would make us so rich in experience!

Fall 2014/Spring 2015 CP here! Sounds like we were there (at least partially) for the same time? :O That's awesome! Goodness gracious they absolutely got my money handed right back to them all the time while I was there... and even after 9 months I STILL didn't get to see everything that I wanted to! The program sure was exhausting sometimes, but it absolutely had some amazingly wonderful moments.
This is the first time that I heard about all of the old CP housing no longer being there! That's so sad and totally blew my mind! Flamingo Crossings looks like it'll be amazing for the DCP community at large, but phew... those individual bedrooms look tiny. :( I hope that there's more to them then what there appears to be! Totally sucks about the housing costs going up though. Ugh! I was already dipping into my savings to afford all of the stuff that I wanted to do during my program... now they wanna up the rent?! Harsh.
I really hope that all of the future CPs can have as much of a fun and magical time as me and my friends did there! It really is an amazing program, even though they absolutely work ya to the bone some days. Great video!

The Disney culinary program (Or DCP) was worth it. Paid full-time wages, and guaranteed hours, rent was cheaper than off property at $440 a month, was even given 9 free tickets and all the extra holiday ones. We weren't paid OT but that just meant more hours for us when the full-timers didn't want to be at work. Having a car is the best way to do it too, as you don't have to wait for busses and you can go anywhere. I made more money during my DCP than as a full time CM, I have people who have paid their tuition for school off by doing this program. It's only a scam if you let it be.

It's basically an internship. I don't really know of many internships that are much better. internship benefits are all to the mentors or in this case the House of Mouse, the benefit to the participants is the work experience and building a resume for future employment opportunities. If you choose to spend all your money on Disney crap while in the program, that's a choice. I've been to Disney quite a few times and I probably own less than $500 in Disney crap and some of it is stuff that has been given to me, I didn't actually pay for it myself.
