- On March 4, 1993, at the first ESPY Awards, Jim Valvano won the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award and delivered his famous “Don’t give up ... Don’t ever give up" speech. The speech and the V Foundation for Cancer Research that was born from it, are Jim’s legacy.

One of the greatest speeches ever given in human history. I remember the first time watching this in high school English class and my teacher pointed out certain things Valvano said which spiritual and physical aspects. “Laugh, Think, and Cry” are all physical aspects in life. You can feel emotions with these 3. And then “heart, mind, and soul.” Those have spiritual meanings as well. Cancer couldn’t touch his heart or his mind or his soul.” God rest his soul. ❤

Found out today that my mom's colon cancer surgery left cancer in the margin. Have been listening to this speech since I was a kid 20 some years ago and inspires more than ever now. We're going to keep fighting on.
I grew up a UH fan.
When NC State beat UH in 1983 it was like someone had taken away Christmas and my birthday.
I disliked Jimmy V for being the coach that beat UH in the finals. Once I learned about who he really was, I couldn’t help but think that he was the greatest coach ever.
The world needs more Jimmy V’s.
One of the great speeches given by one of the most inspiring people and my life idol. He had the uncanny ability to leave everyone that crossed his path a little better off if not a lot. His life should be celebrated and known as on of the most genuine best people to ever walk this earth!! Your voice lives on Jimmy V.!! Love ya
