I really like the Humbrol products.
i would avoid Humbrol products like the plague, and im not sure why i have all this time, this worked a treat, really impressed.
The Humbrol website did use to recommend using Cellulose Thinners when airbrushing these clear cotes. In fact this was the only way I could get the Matt Cote to fully dry, with normally thinners it would always remain slightly tacky when handled (if years later). I will admit my bottles of clear cote are several years old and the composition may have changed to work with standard thinners. I do like the Matt Core though as it really does give a very flat finish.
I've used the Matt cote and brush painted it on my models. It really does dry to a completely flat surface and self levels leaving no brush strokes, BUT...and this wasn't mentioned in the video...you'll find that the varnish will seperate in the bottle with a clear fluid ontop and a cloudy liquid at the bottom. Make sure you shake it vigerously so that the bottle is all the same colour and consistancy and you wont have any problems. Great product.

I really like these to even things out after finishing a kit. I recently completed a 1/72 scale Lightning. I used the Humbrol Acrylic Gloss to prepare for wethering and decals. After decaling I sprayed on the Satin Cote and everything sealed in nicely. You can use the Cotes over decals. Before using make sure you mix very well. They also take a bout twelve hours to dry so plan accordingly. Humbrol products are great. Just mix very, very well.
This is a bit late but did you thin them with enamel thinners if so did the decals get damaged
@@randomdanyt4270 I dont think decals will get damadged. I am pretty sure you can also use a thinner like Mr color thinner or Tamiya lacquer thinner for these clear coats if you want them to dry faster. Athleast they work well on their normal enamel tins and the coats that are being airbrushed or brush painted drys faster. Lacquer thinner and the solvents in it evaporates faster than enamel based solvents (hydrocarbons). Dont use normal hardwarw store lacquer thinner it will destroy decals and is much more dangerous.
It's a shame somebody from Humbrol doesn't answer all the questions here. I know this is a few years old, but shouldn't be that hard to keep up with- can't you receive a notification when someone leaves a comment? Others manage to respond to questions/comments
Matt coats work best for tanks, but do they work well with planes too?
I feel like a matt coat would be too un-reflective, and give the plane a unrealistic look.
Would a satin coat work better for planes? Since it is not fully glossy, but also not fully matt?
You should use matt when your making a weathered design, satin also works for that but i think matt just looks better for that.

@@DG-qo6vp no, use a gloss to apply the decals then seal it over with a matte, if you were to apply the decals over a matte finish it would be very harsh and the decals would not conform properly

Does matt cote and matt varnish have the same function?
Yes, just different names.
I have never put any varnish through my airbrush unly used rattle cans, only reason is cleaning out the airbrush with solvents would damage the "O" rubber ring in the nozzle & I do not have any replacements.I have only ever used acrylics & water.However I do have a bottle of Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner perhaps that would help?

Ive been searching a technique on how to make cool the action figure by using these method.
Now ive got an idea on how to make iron man glossy and the other a matt finish look.
Ive just tested this on my Battlestar Galactica (which I sealed using Revell clear gloss) in a small section underneath and its worked a treat removing the shine.
But I have a quick question.....
After setting decals with Microset & Microsol, is matt cote safe to use to seal decals undiluted?
Or it it the case id have to seal the decals first with my Revell clear gloss, then use the matt cote?
How or what do you clean your brushes with after using Humbrol Clear Cote? A friend told me to use a small drop of shampoo to clean any brush I've used with enamel paints and that works fine - I've had no subsequent problems using brushes I've cleaned this way (enamel being a solvent, so I'm told, it can glue the hairs or fibres together). So, what's best for cleaning a brush youve used Clear Cote with???

Am I able to use enamel based varnish on acrylic painted models? I dont know which varnish to use on acrylic paint, but i want to use humbrol products. I bought some enamel based varnish but i only paint with acrylics. So now I wonder if i can use the varnish that i bought.

why does the gloss cote help with washes flowing into recessed parts but the matt or satin cote does not?
Hi, I think I made a mistake in matt varnishing my model kit (from plastic). I used brush & not thinning the lacquer. I tried to wash it with water, but still no luck. Is there a way to clear matt varnish? Thanks in advance.
I diluted matt cote with some enamel thinners, but for some reason I ended up with a gloss finish rather than a matt finish, why is this, am I doing something wrong with diluting or application or have I kept the varnish in unsuitable conditions?

I'm applying the matt cote to my model, let it dry for 24h and then I apply the washes. After applying the washes I remove the excess with thinner/white spirit but the surface remains sitcky. Does anyone knows what the problem could be?

i`ve strayer satin varnish over my model and it all turned white. didn`t used any thinner because that thing removes colour from model in a second.

Are the enamel thinners needed? I just bought each of these and do not have enamel thinners as I am applying it to acrylic surface. Do I need enamel thinners and will this be ok for acrylic painted models?
it's perfectly fine to use enamel paints or finishes over the top of acrylic however you should NEVER mix your thinners, most acrylics are water based and when mixed with enamel thinners they will split out forming a glob of pigment at the bottom, a layer of oil and alcohol and then finally water at the top which no matter how much you stir and agitate will never mix properly again. In short match your thinners with their intended paints and remember to only paint wet on dry if mixing paint types.

Tom Gilchrist Yes, but make sure you use the same brand. For enamel washes it would be best to use an acrylic gloss coat, but if you leave the enamel one to dry for 24 hours it probably works aswell
Jasper Breur will I be able to apply enamel matte varnish over the acrylic gloss once the decals and wash has set though? That was my original plan (I.e. enamel paint, acrylic gloss varnish, final enamel Matt varnish) but i have no spare material to test it on.
I think this is possible, but I'm not 100% sure. I know it works fine with Revell paints, but I haven't tried Humbrol paints before. As long as you use the same brand I think it should work. I once painted a MiG-21 with Revell enamels and then clearcoated it with an acrylic clear coat from a cheap spraycan, that turned into a disaster: All the paint came off. But when I tried again with a clear acrylic coat by Revell it worked perfectly. Just test a small piece before you do the whole model, just to be sure
@@jasperb9233 brother I want to do an oil wash, with glossy humbrol varnish, I am going to use winton oils, but I am worried about its own oil thinner. I think it is based on turpentine, that is bad? What solvent would you recommend to use the winton oil and not spoil the varnish?

No you cannot, it's an enamel varnish which means that you have to use enamel thinners, turpentine or mineral spirits

+James Fender How are you applying it? I've used it with my Badger 105 airbrush and thinned it with Humbrol thinner at a 1:3 ratio with good results.
