  • Yes, there is more Phil Baugh footage out there. This is from a performance with Buddy Emmons and the Lawton Kicks Jazz Ensemble, Cameron University circa 1984-85. Enjoy!

    Towards the end of his career, Phil Baugh played a Peavy guitar into which he had installed a series of cables that modified the pitch of all six strings and controlled by foot pedals.

      I have been a huge fan of your father since the mid 1960's when I first started playing guitar myself. Despite being one of the greatest guitarists of all time, he is criminally underrated and under appreciated imo. Funny thing is, although he could play like virtually any famous guitar player you could think of absolutely perfect, I doubt very seriously any of them could touch him! I regret deeply never having to seen him play in person. God rest his soul.

    A CD of dad was released back in 2005 titled "Live Wire" with all his biggest hits. I also suggest trying to find a copy of his "Country Guitar II" album. That album has some of his finest instrumentals (in my opinion). As far as reading about him... there are a few bios online but that's about it. That and the article in Guitar Player Magazine that Earl suggested.
    Thanks for listening and enjoying his music. :-)

    Way back when, I was a young guitarist & happened upon an old instrumental album that had Phil Baugh's Country Guitar 1 on it. Of course I went crazy for it. I don't know how I found out, but somehow got his label's address. I sent him a letter of admiration and lo & behold, a few months later he sent me his album "Country Guitar 2" (I believe this is the one where he was experimenting with the MSA pedal board hooked up to his guitar).
    Wonderful album with, as you say - many fine tunes on it. I certainly learned several.
    Despite being so heavy, my T-60 was one fine guitar.

    @earltroach  Před 16 lety +3

    Not sure what CDs are out there. He had a few solo vinyls back in the day. There was at least one feature article in Guitar Player magazine. He was also the inventor of the pedal guitar which he played. Maurice Anderson (MSA steel guitars) built it for him, then about ten years later produced 25 similar guitars before they went into bankruptcy, one of which I own.

      Infidel14?: Phil is using a Peavey T-27 LTD guitar. It is a two single coil pickup (neck and middle) with a humbucker (bridge) that can be rolled off incrementally to a single coil. The LTD model has a subtle change in which pickups are affected by the tone controls that differentiates it from a standard T-27. Peavey developed the humbucker-to-single coil roll off long before Washburn claimed they developed it. Phil is also using a custom tailpiece and mechanical linkage to push pedals mounted on a floorboard, that function very similarly to the changer mechanism on a pedal steel guitar. By pressing the pedals, singly or in combinations, he can change the tuning of the guitar while playing it. I am a guitarist and pedal steel player, and own a Peavey T-27 LTD; unfortunately, I don't have the tailpiece, as it was custom made for Phil, and I have no idea by whom.

    • @earltroach
      @earltroach  Před 7 lety +6

      That pedal system was made for him by the late Maurice Anderson (MSA steel guitars) in the early 70's. In about 1980 Maurice produced an updated version and build 25 of them. Most went on Peavey guitars unless you sent him a guitar. I know of one on a Les Paul and I have the only Tele with one. The bodies had to be machined for the mechanism to be installed, where Phil's could be re-installed on other guitars with a bit of work. I met Phil once, actually at this concert, and we discussed the tuning of the unit. He was a very, very nice fellow and we certainly lost a great player, innovator, and human being when he passed.

      Thank you very much for this explanation. I was quite intrigued and, I knew what I was hearing but, couldn't grasp what the hell was going on here. At first, I found myself looking for Jeff Beck type of hand movement on the bridge, followed by footing a whammy pedal but, quickly ruled that out by the age of the recording. I must have rewound this a number of times before checking the comments for clues. Thanks Lawrence.

      That's a matter of taste and opinion- I got a P.V . in a trade and it was a real pile of junk- extremely thin neck-so thin you could press on the back of the headstock and the neck would bend, leaving a flatted pitch-terrible frets-weighed a ton-got rid of it as fast as I could.

    • @earltroach
      @earltroach  Před 2 lety

      The pedal guitar was invented by Phil and Maurice Anderson who owned MSA steel guitars. They may have done some defense contracting, not sure. Phil's was a prototype he took with him when he moved to Nashville. 10 years later Maurice built 25 units, slightly different, one of which I still own on a telecaster. Most were installed on Peavey T60 guitars unless you sent them a guitar to be installed on. Shortly after the company went into bankruptcy.
