- Last week I jumped on a zoom call with Mr May to record a few question for a DriveTribe video about the discovery of Jeremy Clarkson's Lancia and James May's Mercedes from the Botswana special. Some of James' answers didn't make the final video so I thought I'd post them here with a few other bits of random chat from our call.

Sensible James May “you got a car, save for the house”
@Carrot Cruncher and buying a house is also some kind of investment. The price will only go up, unlike cars where if you can sell it half the price you bought it you are already damn lucky.
the quicker you can buy a house, the better. not only is it less expensive in the long run, but it’s an investment too.
Remember you can live in a car, but you can't drive a house!

Well I think he is the only one out of the trio to not have any children, so I think this is kind of a way of passing off his wisdom to some younglings.

I absolutely love the relationship that Lucy and James seem to have. He seems to genuinely care about her wellbeing and is interested in what she has to say.

I had the pleasure of meeting James on set at Top Gear. I sat and had a chat with him for 5 minutes and he's genuinely a top bloke.

Yes. Because she already has a car. A good, newer car, mind you. And "not going anywhere for a while" is the perfect time to save money because those are generally the times in life when you spend the least money so you're able to save more.

Keep saving for the house and get that before the car. You will never be sorry. Cars are consumables, a house is an investment. You will have plenty of time for all kinds cars in your life.
Great videos. It's really interesting seeing behind the scenes and also seeing just how genuine people are! Unfortunately James is right, as tempting as a Model 3 is, it's probably best to keep the money for the apartment/house.

These videos are excellent. This is really becoming one of my favorite channels.
I like how you can sense James getting worried/serious when she mentions that she is considering buying a Model 3. When you get older you realise that you shouldn't be spending money on depreciating assets and that's why James said not to buy it. Definitely a wise financial decision.

That's some very sage and good advice from James. It's the boring thing to do but once you've got a house, the real fun in buying awesome tech like Tesla's can begin.
As much as I would absolutely love to have a model 3 too I have to agree with James the house is totally worth it! Plus once you get one you can pretty much do what you want with your savings afterwards

Capt Slow is correct. Mini is sufficient and fun. Continue to save. You’re videos are excellent. Your calm approach and dry humour is just what a Covid world needs. Continue your craft, stay the course and fun cars will come down the line. Perhaps start your own reviews on cars. Manufacturers will give you one to use. 💡driving fun cars without buying them. Current review channels are boring IMO, everyone reinventing Chris Harris.

I almost bought a brand new car when I paid off my mortgage. Having had five years use from a Jeep Grand Cherokee that had cost me less than £1,500 to buy, service, and get through four MOT tests helped me to decide to buy a bigger house instead. I then moved to a house that had a private access road at the rear shared with about ten other houses, other than a few company cars the cars along that road looked like they'd been bought for one of the Top Gear cheap car challenges. Eight years later the Jeep was still going strong, despite being regularly driven around quarries when I worked at them, and I managed to pay off the small mortgage taken out to move to a bigger house. If you don't mind people thinking that you are a pauper because of the car that you drive it is better to put your money into your home.

Good mature advice from JM about burning your hard savings on a T3 which will only ever depreciate, when a house will generally appreciate.
About the interview technique, can I ask, do you get the participants to record their contribution directly onto their phone is high resolution, just use the Zoom channel for the conversation and then later get James to send his recording to you separately which you post edit into the final?
I'm gonna be honest and say that James May was never one of my favorites on Top Gear or Grand Tour but the more I see his interactions with you I'm starting to like him a lot. Anyway great content again from you, looking forward to see more of you and your videos and its nice seeing tips and tricks for my own videos. I don't want to criticize you or anything but could you maybe smile a bit more, I know its hard especially if you're not comfortable to be in front of the camera.

The Model 3 is insurance group 48-50, so it would cost roughly the price of a house to keep on the road each year.
Better going for the house. The reverse angle is a nice twist.
