  • This is Salif Keita, the legendary musician from Mali, who is considered as one of the most influential musicians on the African continent. Known as the “Golden Voice of Africa”, when Salif Keita decided to become a professional musician, he faced bigger difficulties than simply securing a gig.
The first challenge was that he was born with albinism, a condition widely discriminated against in Africa. Number two was that he comes from a royal family, descendants of Sunjata Keita, the 13th century founder of the Kingdom of Mali.

I met him in Toronto before a show. Recently found some early records of his from the 1970s but I haven't had a chance to listen to them.

There use to be a music festival that would be in the Sahara desert in Northern Mali that he would perform at. It us to be one of the best festival in West Africa. It is a shame that it no longer happens. Hopefully one day when things are peaceful again.
