  • One inescapable aspect of modern life is that humans are constantly creating data. So as enterprise data booms, IBM Storage Flashsystem is empowering businesses by scaling them efficiently, by rethinking the way storage operates entirely.

Disregarding that this is sponsored content, this was a pretty bad video. I'm a Software Engineer that specializes in storage devices and yet I can't figure out what's being sold here beyond an IBM service. Also Vox tends to go slow in explaining complicated stuff but this breezed through a lot of it. The guy in the video is talking as if the audience was fellow technologists but that's obviously not the case. They tried to make up for it by relating it to farms and crops but the analogy is pretty weak imo.

Can we get better tape drives? Ibm has flash storage competitors, but noone really competes for tape storage, and flash storage is more temporary than the 70-200year shelf life of magnetic tape. Flash storage gets corrupted after ~3-6 months if not actively refreshed, which degrades the lifespan of the flash chips.

    • @avramcs
      @avramcs Před 4 měsíci +1

Well generally the problem is that with magnetic tape it takes forever to read the data and even longer (if not impossible) to change the data after the fact (this depends on the tape and the format). Even with this though, there have been developments in Tape Drives. Look up "Linear Tape Open" drives, they are basically what you are describing (a 18 TB magnetic drive), however like mentioned above they are mostly only used with mass data storage and backups, as writing to them takes forever but reading from them can be done with the speed of an average ssd.

Samsung, Micron, Western Digital, and Kioxia all make and improve flash, so I wish ibm put more focus on tape technology.

It's purpose is an air-gapped backup and nothing else. If you are playing on this market, i'm am certain tape vaulting is not your 2nd backup.

This is hilarious, even for a Software Engineer this was basically nonsense.
This feels like it's straight out of the Onion (except they would've given the nameless engineer a funny name)
tl;dr: They're selling some data storage thing called a FCM which has non-modifiable backups inbuilt in it.
    Some highlights:
    Summary of video:
0:56 - Rounded Grain Silo's are really great!
1:07 - Global data production has increased from 33 to 120 zettabytes since 2018
(For some reason they say the silos had a direct impact on data production)
1:24 - IBM wants to sell you Storage FlashSystem.
1:42 - Nameless Engineer appears & starts talking about something called a FlashCore Module (FCM)?
    * The FCM offloads "data reduction" from the processor???
    * Apparently this lets you consume less energy, and makes it unique?
2:14 - Explains that an IBM FlashSystem uses FlashCore Modules
    * Apparently requires at least 29% less energy than other storage systems.
2:25 - Nameless Engineer appears again
    * FCM's Efficiency + Efficiency of Storage Controllers = Durability + Less Energy
3:06 - Apparently this helps data resilience, so if data is lost it can be easily restored?
    * Shows the text "machine learning" on a cloud which is never explained.
3:50 - FCM's take snapshots of the system and makes it a "logical??" airgap.
    * So no one can delete it, but it can expire
    * A safeguarded copy is a immutable snapshots (basically non-modifiable backups)
    * This safeguarded copy is on the flashsystem so it means it can restore quickly.
If you google it, you'll learn that FCM's are just an IBM's SSD alternative.
Also the nameless engineer is Andy Walls

Typical old and boring IBM presentation. IBM always put lots of technical jargons in their ads and they thought it's cool.

I realize this is an ad, but was still baffled by how little substance there is in this 5 minute video. Literally no actual detail about anything was given, just some very high level nonsense analogies, concepts and cool visuals.

This is a good way for Vox to make money; use their talent to create 'infomercials'.

Why are you putting out 5 minute commercials on your channel? This is the kind of 💩 that makes me not want to be subscribed. I paid $10 a month so I don't have to see any commercials on CZcams. It's bad enough that I have to fast forward through 1 to 5 minutes of advertising on most videos nowadays. But here you guys go and blow all those other people out of the water by saying hey, we're not going to have a 5 minute commercial in a 15 minute video. We're just going to have a 5 minute commercial and call it a video. 🤬🤬🤯

So, how litter information should the video contain?
    IBM: yes
    That was awful.

Or in other words, give IBM total control over your all your data, and they will allow you to use “your own” data in their systems! And you have to pay them for this privilege of using “your own” data too, of course😂
