How Moses McCormick learned 50+ languages! RIP

- đđœ Moses McCormick was a prolific language learner and CZcamsr who passed away recently.
Incredibly, Moses spoke (to varying degrees) over 50 languages, and I wanted to pay tribute to him by making a video about how he learned languages - what drove him, and the techniques he used.
This wasn't an easy task, as Moses recorded 3,210 videos over his CZcams career. (This prolific activity gained him 1.2 million subscribers and over 180 million views.)
In other words, I had a lot of material to comb through! It would be impossible to sum up everything that Moses was about in just one video, but I tried my best, and I hope I did the task justice.
Here's what you'll learn in this video:
âą The single most powerful activity Moses used to learn 50 languages
âą The "pen and paper" strategy he used to plan his study
âą How Moses was able to legally record people with a camera hidden in his hat
đ LEARN A LANGUAGE THROUGH THE POWER OF STORY
Whether you want to learn FIFTY languages, or just ONE, stories are the best way I have found to get fluent. Forget the boring textbooks and time-wasting apps and learn a language the natural, effective way with one of my story-based courses

I can some what understand Italian and Portuguese. đźđč đ”đč
I always wanted to learn English. When I was a child, English course was very expensive. When I was a teenager, I saved money and paid to learn Spanish because English was expensive. In my twents, I got a job at a book store. I bought some English grammar book and taught myself. I don't have a Brazilian certificate of English, but I got a job at two English school as a teacher and worked for five years as a translator. I am teaching myself now Italian, French, Spanish properly because I am basic, Greek and Arabic.
I just found your channel. Surely will apply your method too.
By the way, Hello from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. Learning languages is a fantastic occupation to me.
Made me learn Tagalog and Hindi
Heâs a legend. I really enjoying learning new languages & cultures through 80 or so countries over the last 18 years.
Your video are very well done & appreciated
Great video Olly and a great way to pay tribute! He was the master.
Thanks man, Iâm glad you liked it. A big loss for the community.
Yes, RIP Moses. Could you both make some videos to encourage and motivate young foreign language learners? I'm 16 and learning Spanish. I'm determined to become a polyglot someday. I'm going to start with the romance languages then move into Germanic and Asian and Semitic later on. I love yalls videos. Keep it up.

Scary stuff if he was really murdered. Substantial evidence needs to be found.
I asked Moses if it was better to learn by yourself or be taught . He said both are fine "when you learn by yourself you go at your own pace". "It just depends on the person and their preferences". Currently studying 4 languages . Legends never die !
I mean to be fair you can say that with anything ><
I found the fact his friends pushed him out there to "Test" his speaking and he kept getting pushed via youtube comments was a big push. And like olly says once you learn 1 the rest are easier
I used to follow guy long ago, he isn't really fluent in anything, he just spoke converstational in sooo much
To me, its insane his mind was able to balance and seperate each language. The man really did show how endless and powerful our minds are in language and communication
ManâŠđđ
AWESOME, godspeed to you. and may moses rest in power
Either way, it doesn't matter. A student is not better than it's teacher so make sure your teacher is someone that natively speaks that language. It is not a coincidence that self taught people are very successful and become fluent while those "studying" often don't become fluent.
How he died
His death made me go back and watch his videos, which inspired me to jump back into learning Spanish. The joy he brings to people when he speaks their mother tongue is really special. Rest in peace!
Iâm pleased for you!
Sometimes I think he faked his death, would be cool if I was right
Exactly my experience. I used to always just watched his videos being amazed. But now I actually had some time and I've been re-learning Spanish since high school and I've come a long way in just a few months. I can actually watch CZcams and understand things now
@@bryannguyen2383 how did you learn Spanish
â Learned a bit in high school and now I'm using Babbel, watching a lot of youtube, TV shows, and listening to podcasts. Also talk with others if you can, it helps a lot. I might switch to Pimsleur for future languages just bc I hear about it so much from polyglots like Moses and Ikenna

@@footyvision2218 đ
@@footyvision2218 Something to do with heart complications, not sure what exactly, that's what i saw on Wikipedia
I started learning Spanish at age 29. Up till then I spoke only English. Just curiosity. Like Moses said I never had any intention of learning to be fluent or make any big deal of it, once I got on a roll, it just started going and going.
I literally started by picking up a small piece of text (A warranty message on a product) in Spanish and a dictionary to see if I could "de-code it". Then I couldn't find some of the words in the dictionary..... then I figured out that those were verbs that had to be "conjugated", so I learned about verbs...... then later another piece of grammar or a few other words. I got books, I read them. I put labels with the Spanish names of things all over my house. I found Spanish speaking pen pals online and communicated slowly by looking up words and plugging away at it for hours and hours, week after week, month after month.
At the end of one year I had taught myself to speak, read and write Spanish somewhat fluently. I made friends in the Hispanic community. I'm 50 now and still use Spanish almost weekly here in rural Georgia. Learning a language was one of the best things I've ever done in life.
Great job! I do similar to what you you in Texas.
Amazing!
@@harrison85 Amazed myself actually , I'm generally a bit lazy. lol
Best things you've done in your life? Was it really that serious?
@@SourStrawberrys Yes. It completely changed my life. When my company found out I had taught myself Spanish, they moved me into an international sales position, and sent me all over the world on their dime. I made lots of new friends, I discovered cultures, food music I wouldn't have. It's been over 20 years since then and I still use Spanish on pretty much a weekly basis despite living in the rural USA.
His 'Level Up' videos were and still are fun to watch and motivating. Rest In Peace Moses.

I'm crying for 2 reasons. The joy I get from this video and the sadness that Laoshu is gone.
I just found out he passed đą sorry to hear. Loved his video helped me to keep practicing.
Yeah man, he was a real genius. I was looking forward to getting his courses, but life had other plans.
It saddens me still that this incredible man died so young. However he died is immaterial, he inspired a lot of people. RIP.
I wish he could pass on just 1/10th of the language knowledge to me, that would be awesome! He truly was a language genius! Never even know somebody could be that good in languages!
My favorite Laoshu moment definitely has to be the one were he was speaking with a group of chinese people and one pulled out their phone contacts for some reason and they asked him if he could read chinese characters.
He read them with no hesitation. And the look on the chinese group's eyes was unforgettable. They continue to converse in Mandarin when two old ladies come out of nowhere and talk to him in tagalog "oh, you're still here?" Is what I remember but ik they had a conversation in tagalog.
At this point the chinese group were loosing it and couldn't believe what was happening lol. But then there was an Indian guy holding a flag I think that was watching the whole thing go down in the background.
The two old ladies and the Chinese asked Laoshu if he could talk in his native tongue as well.. offcourse, he was able to speak Hindi. And everyone in the group was flabbergasted at what they had just witnessed lol.
Definitely his best moment. Up there with the time he went to South Korea and was speaking with group of students. They thought he was working for the FBI for knowing so many languages LOL
