Good thing to know. I'm mexican so when I was in high school I suffered from bullying because I was a stutterer back then so everything I read or spoke in my native language (spanish) at school made me uncomfortable and I was being laughed at. I just realized this bad experienced helped me getting fluent with english. I immersed myself into the language since I wanted to escape from what I was living. I feel so thanful to the english language for embracing me. Btw I don't stutter anymore but I can stutter in spanish when I get nervous, I've never stuttered when speaking english somehow so I guess that's weird

I think I'm in some sort of lack my skill in speaking fluently in English except listening or reading or writing it as I'm not a native speaker, (as you may predict with my name) so I've subscribed Lucy's channel somewhat 6 months ago, and her videos helped me so much to have better English skills, but today when I saw your video, Olly, I just got to know the most accurate methods or we say key points to have an accurate fluent speaking skill of the language which is not your mother language.
Thanks very much both Lucy MA'AM, and you, Olly, for guiding me to get me know how do I deal with, specifically for my IELTS exam!

One thing I find useful when studying a new language (I started learning Spanish in 6th grade back in 1962 - and I'm still learning snippets of languages as I approach 70 years old) is learning songs. I start by hearing the song and more or less parroting the words, then I go through it line by line, word by word, and try to grasp the literal and figurative meanings.

Im currently learning Swedish (I speak German, russian and English, and German and English really helps with Swedish) and look what I found out:
Duolingo is actually not the worst place to start, especially if you're learning a language out of you're (I forgot what it's called) language group. If you already speak English, which is a Germanic language, and you wanna learn Swedish, which is also a Germanic language, Duolingo is so helpful. This also works with Romanic and Germanic languages, so if you speak a Germanic language like English, and you wanna learn Spanish, Duolingo is also a great place to start. If you actually take it seriously and do all the classes to max, you're actually gonna remember the words and grammar. Of course Duolingo can't teach you a language, but as a starting point it's great. It's kinda like you're playing a game. But if you rush it it's not gonna work.

As a guitar player for many years I’ve seen so many parallels with learning an instrument to learning a language.
    Repetition
Formulas (methodical approach to memorise rules)
    Training your ear
Committing to learning both theory and playing by ear (classes and fun)
How dots connect without realising (muscle memory from repetition)
Learning to read and speak (observe others playing and respond)
    Just some examples

For many many years I struggled to the point of becoming shy and insecure to the point of giving up. I even learnt more Italian in the process (Italian friends). I recently started learning Tagalog about 4 months ago. I wanted to communicate better with my coworkers (90% of the people I work with are from the Philippines) and even after only 4 months of steady studying 30-60 mins a day I’ve started noticing things “clicking” as I listen to the language spoken throughout my day. I find that the more words I learn and the more I start to “connect the dots” the easier and more fun it is becoming to learn. There’s even a few basic conversations I am able to take part in and understand. I have been struggling with “fluency” over accuracy, I find I’m spending to much time thinking about the proper way to say something instead of just saying it, would love to find some help in this area. I feel like learning words and breaking conversations down in my target language is working. But I also feel like I can be doing more to speed up the process

I had a similar experience while stationed in Germany 88'-90'. I would go out with my soldier buddies, and none of them would try speaking German. I always had more fun, even if I made one mistake after another. I noticed that the German people treated me better for trying. I felt like I am in their country I WANT to try to speak their language.
I left Germany and moved to Italy where I started again, with only a phrase book. I practiced very hard, met my wife, and got the most out of my time in Europe.
I have been learning Spanish now for about 3 years, It is easier with the background in Italian (Verbs).

  • @MTimWeaver

When I learned Spanish in graduate school, I had the opportunity to spend pretty much all my non-studying hours with a group of people from the Dominican Republic (who were friends of a classmate's who knew them from his time in the Peace Corps). Maritza and her fellow students were SO accommodating and patient with my horrible Spanish.
But I kept at it. By the end of that first semester, I probably had more outside-class hours than any of my other Spanish-language cohorts. Like Lucy, my goal has always been having a conversation, not being 100% correct. So I would speak and make mistakes...and sometimes my friends would correct me and sometimes not. But it helped a lot.
Another thing I noticed was, years later, when I taught English as a Second Language. I was surprised to find that the mistakes my students made in English actually helped my Spanish...because just as I had "Anglicized" my Spanish at first, they had overlayed their grammar onto English. So if I heard something that was wrong in English, but close, I'd note it and then compare how you'd say it in Spanish. This helped tremendously, especially with word order in questions.

The accuracy vs. fluency thing is something I see a lot. My dad and his friends are from Pakistan, some of them are more accurate than me in English and have more advanced vocabulary. While my dad and some of the others speak really simple, kind of broken, English, but are very quick and have good accents. It's really cool to think about this after watching this video.

I couldn't evn understand lucy at first when i started watching her videos evn tho she speaks so clearly.... so i started watching her nd other videos as well with captions . I wasn't actually planning to become fluent in English bt "it jst clicked" like u said n also cz i had nothing better to do during the whole lockdown n i didn't feel like studying jst after giving my 10th board exams ..........nd it feels really good to hear sm1 say " ur english is getting better n u kinda almost sound like a native speaker sometimes( not completely tho i haven't achieved thaaaat level of fluency) ..... Like lucy i was hell-bent too on not letting go of something that i couldn't get . It's kinda similar to Lucy's story apart from the fact tht she worked reaaally hard n i jst learn English at home, watching videos on youtube without evn moving a finger 😅 bt in the end all that matters is tht I'm trying nd it's actually made a difference . I could tell the difference b/w the accents n kinda know 2-3 accents myself n I'm aaalllmost fluent in English , not completely cz I've nvr really conversed with a native speaker n my english is not perfect , I make some mistakes here n there ( not so often now like i used to) bt I'm hoping that I'd reach there one day 😊

When I was that age I learned English as my second language. I didn't think about vocabulary, grammer, or learning strategies. I just wanted to understand what John Lennon or Robert Johnson were singing. Later in life I improved my English by reading Harry Potter because the German translations were not available and I wanted to read the books as fast as possible. - Now, much older, I learn Spanish as a student (because I live in Spain) and it is so much harder, even as I listen to spanish music and read spanish books. I'm afraid of making mistakes while speaking. Speaking English is like a second nature for me these days and I'm not afraid of making mistakes. - So learning a language as a teenager is imho no problem as long as one really wants to learn the language. All the people I know that lived in a foreign country with a different language as teenagers learned that language and are still able to communicate in that language.

After 10 years of unsuccessfully learning English in school i finally became kinda fluent in English when I was 16, after a few months of watching Game of Thrones. I started watching TV shows in English for the first time in my life and the first one was Game of Thrones with English subtitles. At the begining I was pausing almost every frame to read the subtitles and understand what they were saying. Sometimes I didn't understand a word and I wourd Google the meaning. With time I had to stop less and less and I didn't need to search for words anymore, cause I already knew the vocabulary of the show. I started watching other shows and then you tube in English when there were no subtitles yet. My English lebel skyrocketed in the first few months, I feel like I became fluent in a few months. It's been five years, my lebel has improved of course, but I feel like the big change from not fluent to fluent happened in a few months

It's kind of funny how you get the impression that most people are amazing at foreign languages because that 8s all you see on CZcams. The very few Americans who bother to master a foreign language do it because they have talent and passion. You don't really need to master a foreign language in the USA to get ahead. If you did, more people would learn.

Well if you have followed her she dated several Spaniards while living there. So she truly immersed her self into the culture. Now because of the path she employed in achieving language and culture fluency I’ve recommended to others CZcams people adjusting to life in Spain directed to her channel. I was going to send this to her, but you might be a better option. So I’m from the US and it is a verbal aphrodisiac when we hear the Irish, French and the UK accents spoken. So I’m watching a HBO series with a British and Irish cast. However, I’ve decided to watch the dubbed Spanish version, since I can understand it as well. But I wanted to see how different the translation might differ. It’s pretty spot on to the English version, however what it’s missing is the Irish and English accents I’m accustomed to hearing. I would like to hear an English and Irish person be the person dubbing the voices in Spanish to maintain the flavor of their native tongue. Lucy went total Castillian, but I’d prefer the Andusian pronunciation from southern Spain. Why I bring this up, because I once saw a young Korean female panhandling at a fast food restaurant speaking in English and in fluent Spanish. The combination was impressively beautiful to watch and hear. She maintained her native Korean accent while speaking Spanish. She was a non native English speaker. I almost applauded for her flawless performance. Had I thought of it at the time I might have recommended that she go into becoming voice over actress for movies and animation. That job occupation income would provide her a better lifestyle and work environment.
