  • Tanya and I decided to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary by visiting Hydra in Greece. We opted for the Aero3 high-speed catamaran ferry from Ermioni to Hydra, and the journey took us about 25 minutes. Hydra is famous for its car-free streets and its picturesque port area. We booked a room at the Dolphin Hotel, and from our balcony, we were treated to a breathtaking view.
During our stay, we explored the island and noticed the lack of tourists in January, which made our experience even more serene. We couldn't resist trying out the popular hiking trails and were fascinated by Hydra's rich history in shipbuilding. We also learned about the island's connection to renowned artists like Leonard Cohen. To make the most of our hiking adventures, we purchased a detailed hiking map that highlighted the best spots for swimming in the crystal-clear waters.
We highly recommend visiting Hydra from Athens, as it offers a unique and unforgettable experience. We were thrilled about the upcoming anniversary celebrations and decided to enjoy a beer at the Pirate Bar on the harbor side. We reminisced about our previous visit when the place was bustling with activity. It truly felt like a proper holiday, especially with the seafront right at our fingertips.
During our exploration, we stumbled upon a pharmacy where we purchased some cotton buds and discussed the historical significance of the area. One notable place we visited was Lazarus Kountouriotis, a magnificent mansion once owned by a prominent shipping magnate. We also made stops at a grocery store and an art exhibition. A particular studio caught our attention, displaying stunning paintings and even boasting a guest bedroom.
We couldn't help but mention Hotel Leto, a place we wished we could have stayed at. We took a leisurely stroll through the charming back streets, capturing beautiful photos along the way. To quench our thirst, we tried some homemade Greek lemonade and chatted about the various transportation options available on the island, such as donkeys and water taxis.
On another day, we decided to explore the nearby beaches and took advantage of the beach boats to reach Misty Beach and Bisti Beach. We found the beach boats to be a more affordable alternative to water taxis, and we highly recommended using them. Our curiosity led us to the Profit Elias Monastery, where we marveled at the stunning views and respected the dress code requirements.
Throughout our trip, we noticed the presence of friendly cats on the island, and we were pleased to learn about the efforts made to care for them. A highlight of our adventure was the walk to Mandraki Bay, where we indulged ourselves at the Mandraki beach resort and savored the delightful beach bar experience.
As our journey on Hydra came to an end, we couldn't resist savoring the delectable Greek cuisine and marveling at the vibrant nightlife the island had to offer. It was truly a memorable and fulfilling experience that we'll cherish for years to come.Living in Greece - Tanya and I have bought a small old house in Greece and are living in Greece and renovating the house ourselves. These are our experiences of living here. See the chapters below for a list.

For goodness sakes, where are my manners! 🎉 Happy Anniversary!🎉 Just started to watch and so glad you folks made this video. I'll watch it segments as I have time. 😊 Tanya mentioned that the weather in Greece has been a bit dodgy. I think it's a global issue, the weather in Hawaii hasn't been normal either. I'm not complaining, it's just a bit off.

I enjoy your content guys. Great Video. I'm a South African , born of Greek parents. I speak and understand Greek very well. My plan, God willing , is to retire in Greece ( Mesinia) in the next 3 years. I really like the way you have set yourselves up. You guys seem like a great couple and I enjoy the humor and banter between you. Keep up the great videos. Maybe we will bump into you guys sometime. Keep well.

Hydra is kinda a special place, but for me the obnoxious tourist harbor front is best avoided. Crowded and the bars and restaurants are the typical tourist traps, very expensive and not very good. Rather go a little bit inward and you'll find one excellent pizza place. Further inward more is Greco Hotel, arguably the best place I've been ever. It's quiet and clean. Hydra also has some nice hiking spots but if you walk enough you'll discover one of the downsides of such a touristy place.. a massive garbage dump on the other side of the island. And it makes sense, the garbage has to go somewhere and the few garbage trucks that they have all drive around the island and dump tons of garbage daily. Out of sight out of mind one might say. Quite horrid really.
But the cats on Hydra are nice tho :) I expected to see more on video because there are TONS of em
